Discovering that Firestone Walker brews a Trader Joe's six pack IPA for 5.99 makes me feel like that World of Warcraft nerd who found the leather belt. "5.99 sixer Firestone Walker IPA? AAAAHH!!! EHHH!! OOOHHHH!!!!" Sorry about that one.

A: Darkish golden color with a small head. It looks like a good IPA, nothing much more than that.

S: Very nice citrus laden, fresh hoppy smell. Makes one glad to be on the West Coast.

T: I get lots of grapefruit and lemon. The hops are nice and forward, and the malt offers little in the way of sweetness, which means that this beer won't be very popular with customers who just want cheap, easy drinking beer at Trader Joe's.

M: Medium carbonation, and a long lingering bitterness on the tongue. Moderately dry finish.

O: Overall I would say that this is a fine IPA for any day. But if I were to drink it all the time simply due to being so affordable that I was surely get tired of it. It's Firestone Walker brewed. But it's no Union Jack, for that matter.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Modern Times pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $5.99 for a 6-pack
Purchased: Aug. 26, 2014
Consumed: Aug. 29, 2014
Misc.: Born on June 27, 2014 at 11:23 a.m.

Poured a caramel, honey, orange semi-hazy color with two fingers of off-white head. Below average spots of wet foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average retention on the top of the glass. (Sight - 3.88)

Smelled citrus hops, tropical hops, melon, resin, wet hops, earthy, rye notes, soapiness, lime and caramel. (Smell - 3.63)

Tasted pretty close to the smell. Got citrus hops, grapefruit rind, floral hops, earthy rye notes, soapiness, lime, pine, slight resin and caramel. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, citrusy finish. Pretty good feel. (Feel - 3.88)

A decent IPA and a great beer for the value ($5.99). I’d have this again, but I do prefer their pale ale. (Overall - 3.75)
