Mission St. Hefeweizen
22 oz. brown glass bottle, coded "01/25/13 18:10" on 4/24/13

Basic hefeweizen. Seems a bit thin. Just a little more malt, and perhaps a better quality malt, could make it a great beer because it has a very nice hefeweizen yeast component with bananas and clove and apples. It's balanced for what it is, but again, it's just a few feet short of the goal line. However, given the price tag I have to give it a nod as a back up or secondary beer. When I'm working around the house, or cooking dinner, or watching football I don't want to drink one of my 'special' beers, and thus something like this fits in great. It's got enough character to keep me happy, and it's cheap! Every beer has a time and place.

I bought a bottle of Mission St Hefeweizen in a grocery store (Trader Joe's). Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a pale yellow color, hazy, with a blast of bubbles rising in the glass and a thin fizzy head.

Smell is sweet, a little like a Bavarian style hefe, with some clove and banana notes.

Taste is a mix of Bavarian and American style wheat ale. There are some hints of banana a clove flavor, but also the citrus flavor from the American style.

Mouthfeel is wet and clean.

Overall a decent hefe. An odd blend of styles. I would have this again

Brewed on date of July 25, 2013 so about 5 months old.
Pours cloudy yellow with two fingers of white that recedes fast.
Smell is wheat malts a bit of clove and banana.
Taste is slightly sweet bready clove and banana. A few other spices maybe some from the hops.
Mouthfeel is medium and carbonation is just right. Finish light and slightly dry.
Overall a tasty brew I will have again after checking the bottling date.

Got this from Trader Joe's, served in a weizen glass.

A: Pours a crisp, clear gold-orange color with a short off white head and no lacing.

S: Can anticipate sweetness, smells of grains, wheat, malts, yeast

T: Light, sweet flavor to it, tastes of grass, grains, wheat, honey, malts, yeast

M: Medium bodied with ample amounts of carbonation, well balanced

O: The bang for the buck is here, although not spectacular this beer is pretty good but for it's prices, it's near excellency, recommended by me.

Poured from a 22-ounce bottle into a Weizen glass.
Pours a golden color with good deal of haze, one-finger of head and no lacing. The smell is mostly sweet and seems malty. The banana and clove aromas are initially undetectable, but then the banana emerges as the beer gets warmer.

Unfortunately, the banana aromas don't transfer over to the beer as the banana and clove are difficult to detect. A heavy carbonation overpowers the drink and leaves little room for other flavors to emerge.

Overall, not a beer I'd drink again, although I've really enjoyed other beers from the Steinhaus Brewing (aka Firestone Walker).

I should preface this by saying that I don't care for most Heffs. I have come to trust my gut instinct when it comes to picking beer at random though, and this bottle jumped out at me from the shelf at Trader Joe's, so I figured what the hell, if it sucks, I only have to drink 650ml of it. I was blown away by how smooth the taste and mouth feel was. For me, it had very little nose and I didn't get the banana-like aftertaste that some of the other reviewers mentioned, but it is allergy season, so it might have dulled my pallet. I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor of the beer however and it was surprisingly light and refreshing dispute the density and haze. It's a low ABV so it makes for a good session beer.

A: The beer is slightly hazy pale light yellow in color and has a moderate to high amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of wheat are present in the nose along with some notes of banana esters from the yeast.
T: Similar to the smell, the overall taste is mostly dominated by flavors of wheat and also has notes of bananas. I couldn't detect any other flavors such as cloves.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer doesn't have much in the way of complexity when it comes to aromas or flavors, but it's easy to drink and would make for a nice selection on a hot summer day when you're not looking for something overly fancy.

One of my favorites Hef's. I found the Mission St. collection at Traders Joes for $1.99 and figured i would give it a shot. That probably was one of my best decisions ever. Great smell and flavor from start to finish and something i can sit down and enjoy with dinner or if i just want a good beer.

Purchased for $1.99 (650mL). Here is an all around slightly above average cheap drinkable beer. Nothing special for a Hefeweizen but has enough flavor to keep you happy. The mouthfeel is soft and enjoyable, with a cleansing banana aftertaste. A perfect table beer to take gulps of, and the bottle is big enough to share.

Appearance: Radiant orange hue, consistent with the style. No foam or lacing, and it's a bit flat. No yeasty thickness.

Smell: Definitely bubblegum and a bit of banana in there somewhere.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Banana is the main flavor, with a bit of clove an nutmeg. Refreshing, but the thin mouthfeel leaves much to be desired.

Overall Drinkability: A very average beer.

I'm not a huge beer drinker by any means, but from time to time I'll set sail into the hoppy sea.

Mainly stay to hefeweizens, belgian pales, things of that sort.

I was in TJs and saw this and picked it up because of the GREAT color.

Opened it up today and did not enjoy the rest of what it had to offer...

It tastes exactly like original flavor Corn Nuts. I can't stand it. Ruined the beer for me :(

Looks frickin great, though...

Maybe I was in the mood for this tonight., and it was GOOD. Served in a chalice from a 650ml bottle into a chalice (of sorts). No freshness labeling.

A: probably the low point here - color is on, opaque, cloudy apricot / orange hue - definitely unfiltered, but doesn't have the "glow" I get from some. Minimal lacing and a ring with a few clouds throughout the bottle. Not stellar, not bad; still on par for style.

S: Distinct bubble yum (just needs comics), a lot of banana, undertone of spicy clove.

T: Mostly follows scent, though the banana steps to the fore while big league chew bubblegum plays a strong second, spicy clove and very slight herbal hops follow through the finish. Spot on for style and I really like it - complex, yet very approachable.

M: On the heavy side of medium. This is an unfiltered brew, I found a distinct oily coating on lips & tongue, not unpleasant, but unmistakable. A tad thick - couldn't see having more than one.

O: I was looking for a Hefe when I found this at TJ's . I'm glad I tried it - very much a text book example of the Hefe style (IMHO). This was the taste I walked into the store after, and this brew delivered it - nicely done!

I was looking for a Hefe, and I think this is a great example of the style!

Poured this into a weizen glass, and the beer makes a two finger thick white foam presentation, and the body his dark gold and cloudy.

The aroma is peppery, banana, some clove and original flavor bubble gum.

Flavor wise it is pretty much in line with the aroma, and feels light in body but with an oily slickness.

For a lower ABV'd hefeweizen, this would do just fine in Germany if only the crown of foam would retain a bit better.

Contemptible 22oz bottle into 9oz Pilsener glass. Dated 5/2/12. Poured a hazy light gold color with less than 1/2 inch of white head that had very low retention and no lacing.

The aroma had a very light wheat scent, almost benign, and just the barest hints of the expected banana and clove scents. Just kinda meh smelling. The taste was the same, just a very subdued example of what should be. Not bad, per se, just bland.

The body was light and even and meh. Drinkability was OK, but why bother? With the lack of overall presence, this is a forgettable example of the style. Maybe a budget buy for a gathering where the focus isn't on beer.

A - Nice orange gold body. Ok white head with low retention and ok lace.

S - Light nose of lemon, damp wheat, and orange.

T - Dilute orange juice, soft wheat, bright semi-acidic hop center.

M - Light body, somewhat under carbonated.

O - Not a bad hefe. Nothing special though.

A: Little head on a honey amber color.

S: Fruity and yeasty much like a belgian style. Somewhat offputting as it smells rather musty.

T: As with the smell it drinks a lot like a belgian style. Fruity musty. Wheat comes through a little but not a key player here.

M: Sits with a medium body. good amount of carbonation.

Overall a pretty average beer. The taste is so musty I'm unsure if I will be able to finish off the bottle. We'll see. I think it was like $2 for a bomber but... even at that not sure if it's worth it.

Bottled on 5/26/12.

Pours a murky honey orange with a 1/2 inch foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of wheat, yeast, cloves, and some slight banana and bubblegum aromas. Taste is of wheat, yeast, banana, and clove/spice on the finish. There is a very mild spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good and easy to drink beer, especially for the $1.99 per bomber price tag it carries.

look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance - Pours a cloudy golden orange with a white, finger width head which dissipates quickly, leaving behind a spotty, semi-sticky lace.

Smell - Banana and bubblegum can be found on the nose, but there's also a faint, almost medicinal quality as well.

Taste - Classic hefewiezen flavors are there, but subtle: banana, wheat, yeast, and just a touch of clove.

Mouthfeel - Light, almost watery body, but the carbonation lends itself to a nice, crisp bite.

Overall - One of the better Trader Joe's brand beers, and while it won't win any awards, at $2 a bomber it's a hell of a bargain.

This is a gem of a cheap hef.

Has a slightly cloudy golden color with minimal foam. Bubbles constantly rising.

The smell is phenolic with some band-aid and fruit: ripe red apple, pear, lemon, and a bit of banana. A dry, flowery, grassy hoppiness is also pretty prevalent. Very nice job with the yeast!

The wheat malt is pretty light and doesn't taste of musky, cheap, stale grain like a lot of American hefs. It really makes way for the complex yeast and hops.

The only weakness of this beer has to be the lack of body and head retention. There's plenty of carbonation, it just doesn't stick around.

Definitely worth a try if you ever stop by Trader Joe's.

A: Deep, mildly hazy dark yellow. Short off-white head with weak retention.

S: Earthy citrus, bananas, wheat, lemon grass, and some clove spice. Hints of grapefruit, pine and honey.

T/M: Starts with lemony citrus bite. Rounds off with smooth fruits, earthy pine and fresh yeast. Wheat, clove, pale malts and heavy grapefruit tones follow through. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

D: Pretty good for a hefe. Got this for damn cheap at a Trader Joes, great buy.

Pours a hazy orange-gold with a moderate head that faded quickly, but left small amount of foam on top. A little darker in color than a typical Hefe.

Lots of banana in the nose, with cloves mingling in the background. Almost smells like a Belgian wit.

Lots of biscuit up front in the mouth with a cereal grain background. Traces of tropical fruit, it finishes very dry.

Full of carbonation that bites the tongue.

There isn't a great deal of character to this Hefe, though it isn't a bad beer. Generally sort of a boring brew, it's at least worth the $2+ price tag at Trader Joes.

Grabbed this at Trader Joes yesterday,
2.39 for a 220 bottle.
POurs a murky orange wheat color.
Head is medium thick, dissipates a bit quick.
Smells of banana, clove, spices, black pepper, nice bite of lemon, really comes together as a pretty good smelling Hefe.
Flavor is nothing crazy, but thats not what I wanted.Pure unadultered Hefeweizen is what I was looking for and is exactly what I got. Banana, clove, pepper, cream, wheat lemon, sourdough yeast, cider , ending with really the perfect amount of pepper spice and yeast in the throat. The major issue I have is the carbonation, which is alarmingly low
Ithink this a great Hefe. It has body, and a bit to chew on. The creamy body with a slightly spiced finish create a textbook Weizen beer. After spending several years in Germany, this actually holds its own with some of the best, and I really judge my Hefe's by strict standards.
The dissapointing factors of the brew is the appearance and the body, the rapidly dissapating head and overall "unweizen" appearance are almost bizarre given the quality of this brew. The flavor is so good, marred by the flat body If this could be worked out then this beer would be among the top
I didnt expect it, but this is a great Weizen beer, I really enjoyed and will buy again.
Cheers and almost Happy New Years!

Poured this Hefeweizen from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass. The Hefe pours a cloudy orange golden color, produced a nice white head, decent retention and nice lacing left behind. The aroma of this beer has a base of malted wheat, some citrus and banana. The taste of this beer is medium in body, a backbone of malted wheat, slight sweetness, citrus, honey, cloves and bananas. Overall, decent offering- Not the best Hefeweizen but also not the worst. Great value. Prost!

A nice solid hefe. cloudy gold with a fast fading head of decent proportions. A touch of lace. Smell is suitably hefey. Notes of clove and very twangy wheat malt. Taste follows with a good yeasty component and mild banana fruitiness. Low bitterness is complimented by a dry grainy finish. Feel is nicely carbonated and crisp with a light refreshing feel. Quite quaffable with a quenching edge. A good value at 4 bucks a bomber.
