I purchased a bomber of Mission St. Brown Ale from Trader Joe's a few weeks back for, if I remember correctly, around $3.50. At that price, and with a 5.7% ABV, I figured I couldn't go terribly wrong. On opening the bottle, I was unsurprised to find a rather light aroma, but still detected good hints of yeasty brown breads and toasted grains, as well as subtle coffee and chocolate notes.

On the tongue, the beer has an immediate and nice cream-and-light-coffee taste, accompanied by hints of freshly-baked wheat bread, and subtle flavorings of milk chocolate and toasted nuts. The flavors are quite light, and tend to pass away quickly, leaving little aftertaste. Still, the ones that are present are, for the short time they last, well-balanced and delicious. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium-light.

Overall, while it is true that you get what you pay for with a bomber of this price, I think that the casual beer drinker will find this an excellent value; it's certainly a far better option than a Bud Light.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into a Cigar City pint glass.

A: Medium to dark brown - quite dark but nearly clear. One finger's worth of tan head atop medium visible carbonation.

S: Sweet toasted malts, brown malts, mild resinous hops, a bit nutty, and a touch of chocolate.

T: Toasted malts with a hint of chocolate character. Mild resin hop flavor and a moderate hop bitterness at the swallow.

M: Medium to light-bodied, low alcohol presence, and medium carbonation sensation.

O: A solid, drinkable brown ale - but nothing memorable, nor anything I'd seek out.

Poured from a bottle into a 16 oz champaign flute. It has a lovely 2-3 cm tan head which settles down to nice lacing. The color is a lovely medium brown that shows some ruby color when held up to intense light. The aroma is rich and beautiful--malt, ripe fruit, and some hops. The first sip was amazing and blew me away--the flavor is a rich, complex blend of nutty maltiness, balanced hops, a bit of mocha, and some figs. Drinking this at room temperature (68 degrees in the winter) really opens up the rich aroma and flavor. The aftertaste is a delightful mild bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium thick and creamy. Overall this is an outstanding brown ale--I was really pleased and surprised by it.

A- looks like a black coffee during a red sunset. A nice creamy tan head.

S- Cocoa, brown sugar, coffee, mild roasted malts. A little bitterness behind that. Although a bit airy.

T- Starts with a modest malty roasted chocolate mocha, has a minor hop addition but it doesn't revive this beer much. The flavor in this one starts week and finishes flat on its face.

M- Way too watery for a brown ale. Not enjoyable.

O- Well that was unfortunate. Not too many good things to say about this one.

Clear dark brown with some ruby highlights. Tall light tan head that lasts and puts rings of lace as the head drops.
Smell is rich malts with a hint of mocha.
Taste is roasted malts a bit of mocha and some earthy bitterness from the hops.
Mouthfeel feels thin at first then feels closer to medium bodied. Carbonation is just enough. Finish is a bit sweet initially with a longer lasting medium dry bitter finish.
Overall a good example of the style. Perhaps a bit big for the style which I enjoyed.

22oz bomber, only a month old

Look is a dark cola color, mocha head, no sediment. Smell is dry leaves, English hops. Taste has hazelnut and subtle roast, finishing with a touch of hops. Feel is medium, slightly sticky, some cloying sweetness.

Good brown for the price.
