Cost was $2.99 at Trader Joe's. 2013 vintage. 8.5% ABV confirmed. "Imperial Brown Ale." 650ml brown glass bottle with pull-slip papered over pressure cap served into a Mitchell's of Lancaster flared stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Expectations are low given the brewery and the price.
Served chilled. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: Pours a two finger light khaki colour head of nice cream, pretty decent thickness, and generally decent (~3 minute) retention for the high ABV. Body colour is a rich dark caramel-amber. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Uneven light lacing. Okay looking for the style. Nontransparent/nontranslucent.
Sm: Toasted malt, light raisin, generic floral hops, caramel, sticky licorice, and toffee. Roast is sorely missed. An average to mild strength aroma. No yeast character or alcohol is detectable.
T: Biscuit malt, brown malt, caramel, light raisin. Generic floral hops. No alcohol or yeast comes through. Not all that well balanced. Has some nice toffee. Decently built. I'm not a big fan of it; it's pretty forgettable and mundane. Built strangely.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Okay body. Decent thickness. Carbonation is pretty good. Doesn't feel custom-tailored to the flavour profile. A bit syrupy.
Dr: Drinkable but forgettable. It's not bad for its price point, but there's just nothing interesting here. Hides its ABV okay. Rather mundane stuff. For a self-declared "Imperial Brown Ale", it's rather underwhelming. I wouldn't get this again - even at the seemingly good price. I wouldn't recommend it to friends. This one can be safely avoided.

22 oz. bottle purchases several months ago at the Foggy Bottom/West End Trader Joe's in Washington D.C., unknown bottling date, poured into my FFF Teku glass, drank 9/30-10/1/13 over an hour:
A: 2/3 - deep amber-brown, minimal clarity, pours thickly with a rocky tannish head that subsides into a glass lacing
S: 8/12 - very muted aroma but, on warming, there are faint toffee, caramel and alcohol notes
T: 13/20 - on the anterior tongue, there's a slight bitterness that quickly gives way to middle-of-the- mouth malt flavors that accompany the aroma --> toffee, caramel dried fruit (figs and dates especially); unfortunately, the sweetness is too cloying/overbearing for me suggesting either underattenuation or too high mash T; no diacetyl, no DMS or other off-flavors; 10-15 second aftertaste is mostly a turn-off
M: 3/5 - moderate bodied; appropriate carbonation for style; subtle booze for 8.5% ABV
O: 6/10 - I don't want to lambast this beer given it's supreme affordability but the cloying sweetness was not my speed; however, for $3-4 at your local Trader Joe's, it's hard to pass up at least once, but I doubt that I'll be returning for the 2014 iteration unless it's something different and/or special
TOTAL = 32/50
