A big liquor store in a onetime Quonset hut style bowling hall. The beer is in the back left half of what once was apparently the lanes, a quarter of a flight down.

L-shaped cooler corner totals maybe 75 feet. More than half is for sixpacks and singles. The entire rest of the area of maybe 75x75 feet is for cases, racks of sixpacks and a nice singles rack with most items priced. Bring your own sixpack carton or ask an employee or at the checkout for one if you want to make a mixed six.

Exceptional selection of local and better regional brews. Prices are average, mainstream twelvepacks and cases are not usually very low. But they have a great selection of them in stacks, and do have a few sales which can be hard to resist.

Stock force and checkout clerks are friendly and helpful when asked. You can also bring in your empties and drop them off next door at their redemption center by setting them out in their 28-32 can and bottle trays on part of the long counter and getting a receipt to redeem in the store.

Not too hard to get to if you are driving East-West on the Mass Turnpike. Get off at the Westfield exit, drive into town on route 10&202 and then go east on Route 20 about two miles. Super Phipps is on the right at the far end of a Big Y plaza.

UPDATE 9/23/13: Since this review was written I have been to this store several more times. Main difference worth noting is the staff was very helpful in getting new releases out of the back when their stock space for them became empty. Should have mentioned they usually have two clerks to check you out so waiting is seldom an issue, and they are friendly and fairly knowledgeable. I raised my ratings accordingly. Some good sales, sometimes on things you don't see anywhere else, too.

My only gripe is that particularly popular new releases are often either unpriced or overpriced compared to most other stores. New better bombers like Stone Coconut or Enjoy By were $9.50-10 @ for example, where they were $8 elsewhere in the region. When Devil Dancer came out I had to find out the cost at the register (too high for my budget). But on the whole their prices are in the ballpark and their selection probably second to fourth best in the entire Pioneer Valley.

This is one of my go-to local beer shops. It's not the cleanest, most inviting shop around, but the guys who work in the beer department are fairly knowledgeable and are always eager to help out or even just talk beer with you. The prices are reasonable, the selection is decent, and if they don't have what you're looking for they'll always try to get it for you. Overall this place gets my recommendation.

Working in Westfield, I finally stopped by the Super Phipps on Route 20. The store looked like it was a converted bowling alley of sorts but I am not certain. They were doing renovations on one side so a huge chunk of the store was off limits. The entrance is wine/liquor central with a right corner holding even more of those beverages. A freezer lines your front view in the back all the way to the beginning of the left corner. Tons of macro stuff was what I first saw. Within the left atrium of the place, there was just one or two rows devoted to imports. Craft, micro brews were scattered in the freezers and plainly in sight surrounding the two import rows. Compared to Table and Vine which is literally 15 minutes away in West Springfield, this is nothing. The space was not utilized well, almost quantity over quality. Prices did seem inflated as well, which surprised me since this was not a heavy college town like Amherst (though I did see some Westfield State kids shopping and enjoying the selection of imports which made me happy). To me, if you are a Westfield native, this Phipps is heaven compared to the original Phipps or other packies I see on my drive to and from work.

I went to this place on a referal from a fellow BA, and it had quite a bit better than the selection I had anticipated, this store was very roomy, and delivered a diverse selection of beer, much more so than yer average W. MA packy, I ended up walkin out of here with an Anchor Steam "Small Beer"..which I had never seen before, in any other Packy...It ended up that I didn't care for it, but God bless em for havin it!...nice place, the people were as helpful as could be....and I thought that they deserved a shout out here!...if yer in Westfield MA....and you like your Beer, give these guy's a try, odds are that they will have something for even the most discerning beer palate.

super phipps has a pretty cool name. and despite being in an economically depressed, pothole-laden ruralish area, it's got a pretty cool exterior... kind of looks like the jetsons' house (but on the ground). kind of nearby to opa-opa and a short drive to cambridge house in granby.

the place is big, spacious, and full of dust mites and grime. this place is the dirt mall of beer shopping. a large area (practically the whole back left quarter of the store) is devoted to beer. shelving, stacks, racks, coolers.. there is beer everywhere. they even have random bottles sitting on the top of the rack between the beer and wine. you'll see. glassware too, interspersed.

this place has a wonderful selection of beer, but you really need to know how to tell age. lots of the stuff here is old, and that's good when its a 2002 old horizontal, but not good when it's brooklyn lager. i went here specifically based on a tip from BA boto regarding vintage old ho's, and i sure found em. also made it home with some lindemans cuvee rene 1994, brooklyn 03-04 bcs, stone VE 03 (lots left), and something else i can't remember. had the bcs and the 03 already and they tasted great... and they were all cheap as dirt.

dress down... you will get covered in dust searching through the shelves.

the place has a nice selection of belgians and local beers as well as the craft micros. the whole victory line, ommegang, brooklyn, bbc, sierra nevada, anchor, wachussett. no rapscallion, i was bummed. lots of bmc stacks, but thats ok- im sure that appeals to the typical phipper and the craft beer takes up too much space for the business they do in it (see: dust levels).

service was abysmal at best. the guy who rang me up was so annoyed that he had to ring up individual bottles (which were covered in grime) that he was short with me, gave me weird looks, and dropped each bottle into a cardboard box from about a foot and a half above the box. i thought for sure one would break (they did not). i still dont think the yeast is settled in the gueuze.

stop here for an adventure with the potential of treasure. you will feel like indiana beer jones in the lost caverns of super phipps!!!
