I never thought of myself as a wuss when it comes to hops, but this beer's bitterness turned me off. Nice persistent head and citrusy aroma, but the sharp bitterness stings your mouth, with no malty sweetness to offset it. Needless to say, I've had better IPAs.

Pours a slightly hazy burnt orange with a tight one finger white head, sharp citrus and pine aromas dominate the aromas a touch of alcohol sneaks its way in there ass making you think this is one intense IPA.Flavors are not so in your face and that maybe a good thing, the big hop presence is there very resiny and citrusy but a frim nutty malt base holds up real well keeping the hops in check a little. Not a bad beer to be had here seems to be pretty raw but it all comes together quite well.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass

A: Clear orangish hue with a good finger's width of white head. Good retention and good lacing.

S: Fragrant fresh hops!

T: Hops are first to hit the palate, with a rather light malty sweetness that eventually comes to balance on the tongue. The finish is quick and clean, with just a hint of lingering hops.

M&D: Solid medium bodied mouthfeel combines well with the fine but consistent carbonation for a great match. There isn't a real stark bitterness from the hops which makes the brew go down smooth. I like this one a lot!

P_Pours dark orange with a thick sticky white head that dissipates to a thick ring with nice lacing.

S_Piny hops and citrus.

T_Strong hops and pine up front. Slight citrus and floral coming through. Malt backbone give this a nice bisquity finish.

M_Thick,sticky,dry finish.

D_Very.

Impressed by this offering from MBC.

Leaving Michigan to fly back to Maine. The Irish Pub in Terminal C.

In a pint glass, the beer was a hazy amber color. It had a thick white head that left a lot of lace.

Citrus aroma. Sweet malt.

Very grapefruit taste. Orange and tangerine also. Sweet malt background.

Pretty hoppy beer, but balanced.

Best beer I had in my two days in Michigan.

English Ipa

Cloudy amber in color pours nice with a good head it dissipates but coves the whole top of the beer. It laces well on thr side of the glass.

The aroma is malty, has the aroma of a double IPA complex malt but not a whole lot of hop up front with a couple of more whifs I pick up slight earthy hops at the end

This beer drinks like a double heavy body with a numbing alcohol finish. The taste starts with a slight sweet buttery malt and quickly becomes earthy. The carbonation builds but isn't harsh and finishes with a numb mouth and a very bitter finish

As far as drink for a standard IPA this is heavy but if it were a DIPA its drink would be easy

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is a mixture of various hop characteristics including floral and citrus along with some caramel malt and bready malt. The flavor starts off with piney and resiny hops but I also get some floral and citrus notes. The caramel malt backbone keeps the bitterness pretty low. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I was surprised by how nice this beer was.

Received as part the December shipment of my BOTM club.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Semi-cloudy copper-amber with thin white head which leaves minor lacing behind.

Smell: Major orange-citrus aroma, with sweet toasted and caramel malts and light pepper.

Taste: Semi-sweet toasted malts, orange dominated citrus hops, and a lingering pepper and citrus bitterness.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, firm yet creamy body, dry finish that tingles.

Drinkability: Overall, a well-balanced IPA with a long lingering bitterness. While there are better IPAs out there, this is still a very good choice.

Served in a 15 oz frosty mug. Hazy brass color with a good head that holds for a couple of minutes.
Hop forward that fades quickly and leave you with an acceptable finish
Nice straightforward beer very represntative if style.
won't blow your goggles of but worth a try.

22oz. brown bomber poured into an imperial pint. Notes.

A: Pours a dark tangerine copper that has a nice ahzy glow. 2 fingers of white head form and hold with good retention and lacing.

S: Fruit, light esters. Not much pine or resin. Light lemon. Herby. Sweet malts, maybe some maple syrupy notes.

T/M: Bitterness is medium. Hops have a very odd taste. Not herbal but medicinal. Some spicenss, too. Malts are on the sweet side with that touch of maple. Medium body and decent carbonation.

D: Some odd flavors and a somewhat high ABV.

received as part of Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club, Oct 06

This pours a murky, amber color with plenty of lacing from the 1/4 inch head. The aroma is bready - hops are present but not intense. It's piney with a slight grapefruit note. Taste follows suite. It has a pleasant bitterness that finishes with the malty balance.

Not a bad American IPA but with so many that excel, it gets a little lost in the middle.

On-tap at Pizza Plant in Buffalo. Very bitter bias but clear c-hop. A serviceable IPA but tasted like a citrus cold medicine to me. Carbonation a bit aggressive. Peachy clour. No clear hop aroma.Didnt all go together, but would have it again in a bottle if pushed on me.

A - Deep sunset orange with a brownish center and very cloudy. A frothy and solid-looking head sticks around for a while and leaves an abunadace of sticky lace on the glass.

S - Herbal and dank woody hop aroma. Very marijuana-esque. Smells dry-hopped to me.

T - Nice and biscuity solid malt backbone. Bitter herbal hops with the same dank and pot-like character from the nose. A few sour notes pop in at the end and keep things lively.

M - Full and soild. Modedrate to high carbonation levels combine with the acidity and bitterness to create a very lively and perky mouthfeel. As it warms, I can feel alcohol warmth and the mouthfeel gets softer and more full.

D - Outstanding. This has every quality that I look for in an IPA, and the zingy mouthfeel is very pleasant.

Hazy orange in color with a full frothy ivory head that holds quite well, eventually dropping to a creamy 1/8" surface covering and leaving some very nice lace. The aroma offers some very nice fresh hop character - as if they were right in front of you - that appears to be Cascade. Boldly floral with soft citrusy notes! Upon closer inspection some sweetish malt is also present. Really nice and exceptionally well done! The flavor starts with a soft, sweet, and gently fruity malt that's immediately coat-tailed by citrusy hop flavor that continues straight through and lingers in a long finish with a bracingly dry bitterness. The body is medium with a very fine and moderate carbonation that's quite creamy in the mouth and helps the malt that's present to balance its deep bitterness. Well balanced with maltiness, hop flavor, and bitterness being able to share the same stage throughout the entire glass. Well brewed! Clearly the gem of the Michigan Brewing line-up.

The Michigan City High Seas India Pale Ale was a great to end the weekend, The beer is good. The appearance is amber and cloudy with a nice thick off-white foamy head. The scent includes citrus pine and spice. The taste is fullbodied with good hop, pine and citrus flavors. There is a good malt balance which helps to make this beer delicious. The mouthfeel is ok...its got some bite. For any IPA lovers, this beer should statisfy. The beer is worth a try.

Bronze color with a thick, cloudy white head.

Smells sweet and citrusy; nice head retention. The citrus notes remind me of pineapple.

No taste dominates, it just tastes like flowers and tree bark.

Has the typical feel of an IPA, a bitter finish, but the citrus cuts into the bitterness.

As it warms, I can smell orange and/or tangerine.

I'm not a huge IPA fan, but I give this an average score because of the sweetness from the citrus.

A: Brown/tea colored with a beige thin head; lacing is steady

S: A subtle but pleasant citrusy hop presence; a dull earthy pine quality as well; the bready malt backbone holds it together

T: A nicely balanced malt and hop presence; lemon and tea leaves persist at the back; there is a chemical-chlorine-quality permeating as well

F: A bit thin as it runs down the throat; carbonation seems slightly off as well

D: A pretty decent IPA all around

Yes, the samplers at the MBC taproom just keep on coming. Interesting that Michigan Brewing has 3 pale ales on tap (not counting Celis Pale Bock, which is actually another pale ale). This one is indeed different, though. A good and hoppy character with a fruity, almost sticky mouthfeel. However, I also caught something of a metallic tang in it, but otherwise a solid IPA with a bit of flair.

Originally reviewed on May 4, 2006. 12 Oz Bottle. Pour of molten amber lava with fringes of sunrise, rimmed with a cream froth of ivory. Aroma is a spicy, yet cherry syrup-esque waft of candied orange peel, light resins and ginger. Flavor is a decent, yet slightly weak, sweet ruby red grapefruit, with limes peels and a good dose of warm bready spiced yeasts and a finish of toothy grass. Alcohol shows, but carries hop juices nicely. A quite standard IPA, with good construction, great flavor and nice drinkability. Maybe a little too much bitter resins in the finish. Palate bites a little with a touch of hop sugars. Light diacetyls over caramel apple smack.

Pours deep amber red with a small amount of tan/white head.
Very cascade hop smell- citrusy, geen hoppiness, very nice.
Tastes mostly of hops, with a nice malty balance that gives the beer a rich, smooth mouthfeel. Very citrusy and juicy flavor, with a tinge of alcohol presence.
Very drinkable, definitely hits the spot when in the mood for a highly hopped American Ale.
Highly recommended.
