330ml bottle. Footed Pilsner glass. Golden color, clear appearance, headed by white close crown. Slight honey & citric aromas & slight sulfur notes. Grainy & pale malty upfront followed by earthy bitterness. Light body. Moderate to high carbonation. Watery texture. Clean, slight harsh, bitterness & light metallic hues in the middle resolves in a long bitter finish. Refreshing & very easy drinkability.

Pours a clear, light golden color and a generous white frothy head with decent retention.
There's not much going on for the nose, just subtle malty and grainy aroma in the back.
The taste is gentle, sweet at the beginning, followed by nicely balanced body.
The finish is decently bitter (nice).
Smooth and easily drinkable. Enough taste.

I'm not so sure how much weight the Reinheitsgebot - Germany's Purity Law - still holds in an age of multinational-owned, large-scale and heavily industrialized breweries, but this lager certainly looks pure; Krombacher has a spotless clarity that not even a germaphobe could find fault in. Its golden-yellow body is glistening, its bubbles buoyant and its head thick as sour cream.

While it may look like the perfect Pilsner, however, its aroma strongly suggests that Krombacher - the beer self-proclaimed to be the "No.1 Premium Beer in Germany" - is not in fact the poster-boy for Pilsners as it may first appear. This lager not only lacks any trace of the distinctive Noble hops that distinguish the style, but it also harbors an unwanted corn syrup-like note.

Indeed, the palate is also marred by the cloyingly sweet and artificial taste of adjunct. This befouling corn-like flavour devastates whatever clean and authentic Pils malt was used (and any lightly grainy or Graham cracker-like taste it would have imparted). As result, the flavour is as unremarkable as it is unsatisfying; it offers nothing different from ubiquitous North American lagers.

Professional brewers may pick up on a few details I can't: it seems to me the attenuation is decent and the mouthfeel feels like it possesses that higher-sulfate water profile characteristic of the style. (These are more like hunches, mind you, as I lack strong knowledge of the technical aspects.) Still, nothing can ultimately overshadow the noticeable adjunct presence.

German brewers are not immune to concerns of cost, efficiency, and consistency - it's not uncommon for bigger commercial ones to do things their grandfathers would never be caught dead doing. By and large, however, they've maintained higher standards; Krombacher isn't a whole lot different from other mass-produced lagers in its price range - but it is a bit better.

beautiful golden color pour with a great 2 finger head. smell is extremely crisp and malty and refreshing...nice! taste though not so much. a bit bland. noble hops are a bit muted. just average all.around , though drinkable for sure. light body with mild carbonation.

overall an average pils. not bad.
