On-tap at Tortula, on to the beer:

Light pale gold color with a big creamy head on top. This beer has a sweet pale malt aroma, and the taste takes the same route as the aroma. It's very sweet with the usual grassy and floral notes trailing behind. Some might find this to be a little sweet, but I can dig it. It worked well washing down my grilled chicken entree. (364 characters)

A - This one is almost clear with only the slightest hint of a haze, and the color is a dull light-yellow-bronze. The head is about two solid fingers of white crispy foam, and a good amount of fluffy lace is left on the glass.

S - Fresh biscuits and crackers. This isn't as "saltine" smelling as others of the style, but it still has that cracker note... just minus the salt. I detect what reminds me of freshly baked warm white bread like the Amish make.

T - Like the nose, this is a lot like warm white bread and dinner rolls. This is less hoppy than some other German pilseners, and the overall flavor is more malty and a tad fruity. There are little hints of apricot on the back end, but the fruit is only barely noticeable.

M - Light bodied, crisply carbonated, and clean with a fluffy feeling left in the mouth after swallowing. that fluff only serves to increase the general "loaf of airy white bread" like Sunbeam sliced bread that I'm getting here.

D - Extremely quaffable and easy drinking. Lacks the complexity of some of the better examples of the style, but its still a pleasing beer to slake a thirst after a workout (as I'm doing just now). Not bad, but slightly forgettable. This is one of those beers that I'll probably pick up again without realizing that I've already tried it... then I'll get home and check BA and be slightly aggravated that I didn't recall ever having it. (That happens a lot with German beers since all of the bottles have the same shape and many of the labels lack the cartoony or artistic imagination of Belgian or American breweries). (1,581 characters)

Bottle offered to me at a dinner party in Germany.

A: Pours a clear straw yellow with a head that quickly fades

S: Smells like cereal

T: Not too strong a taste, not too offensive, not bad for a pilsner.

M: Light carbanation, light feel

D: Easy to drink, I could have a few of these. (287 characters)

Beer bottle (50cl.), tasted in 2001.

Appearance : yellow color, with white foam head (not persistent).
Smell : cereals aromas.
Taste and mouthfeel : sweet and malted, a good bitterness in finish.
Drinkability : an average beer in the style German Pilsener. (257 characters)

Overall, I really like this beer. It's not fabulous, or a revelation. But it's a very decent Pils.

The pale yellow color was neither impressive nor disappointing. The head was short-lived: composed mostly of large delicate bubbles, which disappeared quickly. The smell was of nice, tacit, yeasty goodness.

The taste was very smooth, with hints of hops cutting slightly through the grain. The mouthfeel was clean and easy, with the slight bite of carbonation being replaced by a tart, hoppy fall-off.

The drinkability was excellent.

There is nothing specatacular about this beer, but it is done well, and is definitely sessionable. I will happily drink this again. (669 characters)

The clear winner in my Lager/Pilsner reviewing afternoon last week.

Brown 0.5 litre bottle, best before 11 Feb 2009. Poured into two tumblers, this beer was richer looking with more colour and body than the other beers (Hasseroder, Wickuler and Mousel). The head was also fuller and held up well throughout the review.

There was an actual smell too, some hops and yeast aromas.

Real pilsner feel to this beer, a good example of the style. I know this beer from old and it has stood the test of time better than some I've revisited lately. (541 characters)

This pils presents itself picture perfectly, lots of white head, and a nice golden and clean looking body. There is a lot of carbonation here, even after a moderate pour. This is how a pilsner should look.

This brew has only a slight fragrance. Not much in the way of malt, but a hint of slight lemon.

In the way of taste, this is a bit more than on par. It's actually a little bit more on the malty side than expected. Somewhat husky and mildly sweet, but nicely counter balanced with a hint of lemon.

This is about as refreshing as one can get in the lager family. Definitely totally balanced and is a swell session cervesa. (629 characters)

Light, clear, gold with a modest, fuzzy off-white foam lid.

Light musty earthy hops and sweetish, lemon and pale grain.

Tastes very similar. Some sweet grainy base, lightly lemony-metallic, and skunkish noble, lightly spicy hops. Light, crisp, smooth.

Not bad, not good. (273 characters)

bought in beijing

clear golden straw, some head that soon fades to ring and a few wisps. lacing is splotchy but sparse.

aroma has the prerequisite noble hops up front, and is otherwise clean. the malt is toasty, and there is some breadiness, but they're pretty faint and in the background.

flavor is about right for a pils, but seems to cut off and become dull for a moment somewhere in the middle. there's still a decent bitterness to be had into the aftertaste, but something is a bit blunted.

the feel manages to be smooth without being totally watered down, with a carbonation that is sharp at first but backs off quickly.

nothing to write home about, but more than acceptable. (686 characters)

I first had this at a German restaurant in Niagara Falls, Ontario, having never seen it in my neck of the woods. Well wouldn't you know, I stumbled across it back home shortly after my visit. This turned out to be a more than decent pils and a very drinkable one at that.

Krombacher pours a standard yellow-golden color with a decent foam that lasts for about 2 minutes. The smell was almost all malt, with a nice sweet aroma in the nose. The standard pils mouthfeel was present with the expected amount of carbonation. The flavor matched my expectations from the aroma, with a nice malty flavor present with a good herbal hop presence to balance it out. Nothing complex, but enjoyable nonetheless. One can still taste the chewy malts and hop bitterness well into the aftertaste, and the beer concludes with no alcoholic warmth.

This brew was a decent surprise. A perfect beer to have with some German fare such as some jaegerschnitzel or some wursts. (953 characters)

Poured a bright golden color with a thick foamy head which turned a few minutes later into a bubbly film. Good lacing along the sides of the glass.

Smelled quite malty and bready, also some floral accents.

Tasted a of breads with a bit of malt. "Bright" tasting, also with no trace of alcohol present.

Mouthfeel was excellent. Perhaps a bit thick for a Pils but the ample carbonation cut through it and gave it a smooth but effervescent edge. Nice.

This was a a nice solid brew. A good representation of a Pils. Are there better? Sure, but you can do a lot worse than this. (578 characters)

Half-liter bottle dated 27.04.08.

Vigorous pour yields two fingers of snowy head. Lots of bubbles rising. A thin, clear yellow. Great lacing down the sides of the glass even toward the second pour of the bottle.

Smell is grassy and skunky sweet. Herbal quality to the hoppiness as well. Aroma erupted the second I popped the cap.

I expected a funky taste from the smell, but it is quite clean. A small taste profile in general, few off-notes, just grassy hops with very balanced malt providing grainy flavor and sweetness.

Mouthfeel is smooth, gentle, rich. The bubbles tickle the tongue... perfectly moderated carbonation.

Very enjoyable, I wouldn't mind drinking this again, and $1.89 for a 17 oz single wasn't that pricey. It's on the sweeter side vs. sharp hops, if that bothers you then find another pils. (815 characters)

this runs under "Premium" in the shop where I bought it, but my best guess is, this being the same brew ... quite surprising quality for a canned lager (to start with), there is everything you would expect from this type of beer: a nice foam, a hoppy smell, a balanced taste (between hops and malt) and unfortunately also a sour aftertaste ... (343 characters)

From a ½ liter can, this brew is light and golden. The head is puffy, white, and nicely soapy. There's a respectable lace. The beer presents a perfumy, hoppy smell that's backed with a little pale malt. Not bad, actually. There's a bit of a bread and dough flavor that comes out in the taste. Unfortunately, there's a bit of a metallic quality that shows up in the mid-taste. The finish is subtle and soft. Medium to light in mouthfeel, with a smooth quality. This is a respectable and nicely drinkable brew. (509 characters)

Poured a medium straw hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a light noble hop and soft grain malt.

The taste consisted of a slightly sweet malt and mildly spicy hop.

The mouthfeel was a bit thick for a pils, which detracted from the experience.

Overall an average pils. Nothing too exciting here. Easy enough to drink however. (397 characters)

Golden orange in color and a nice airy white head dissipating to a thin patchy cap. The nose was fair by standard with a floral hop aroma. Taste is bitter and dry off the bat, and an earthy, woodsy background. Carbonated well and crisp. The finish is dry and a little metallic like but further turns sweeter and crackerish. It coats well for an enjoyable mouth. Nice balance overall with just enough malt character to match the hops. (433 characters)

Krombacher Pils pours a pale yellow with a fluffy white head from a brown 500 ml bottle. The aroma is very mild, a hint of hops maybe. Malt dominates the flavor at first, followed by a metallic hop taste. More malty than hoppy. I'd pass and try something else. (260 characters)

This beer looks good. A deep gold, its pretty dark for an international pilsner. The head is pure white and lasts the whole glass. Thick patches of lace stick to the glass.

Now for the bad...

The aroma is grainy and sweeter than a usual mass market pilsner. Theres also a sickly fruity accent. The taste is too sweet for the style with the same weird fruit/estery off flavor and some cooked veggies. Some hop flowers show in the middle but get lost in the weirdness. The mouthfeel is light with moderate carbonation and a saccarine feel coating my mouth. The finish is conspicuously lacking in bitterness.

This beer is not very tastey. Not enough hops, even for an international pilsner, also some funky off flavors. Just a notch or two above undrinkable. (765 characters)

A fair pils from Germany. Pours out to a medium golden color with a big head of fluffy white foam. Lots of lace. Medium level of carbonation. Aromas of sour maltiness and some floral hops. Taste is suprisingly fresh and light; flavors of medium bodied malts cross over to a white bread note, with hints of floral hops lingering in the background. Not bad. Mouthfeel was crisp and enjoyable. Drinkability is north of average. This would make for a good light evening beer. Worth a try. (484 characters)

500ML can poured into a pilsner glass. Decent looking pils. Golden straw colour, big fluffy head, lots of carbonation, very refreshing looking indeed.

Smell is very bready and malty, nice hint of aroma hops hidden in there, nothing much complex, slight veggie smell, but not skunky or unpleasant, very much just a refreshing pilsner aroma. Taste is very pleasant, very malty and a slight nuttiness in the back. Low bitterness, but enough to keep it interesting. Mouthfeel isn't as bitey as I'd like, but it's a mild complaint. This is a slightly above average pils, thirstquenching and highly drinkable. Not the best ever, but good. (636 characters)

Medium gold in colour with lots of carbonation. Aromas begin with sulfur, then eventually reveal some honey malt and grassy hop notes. Some grassy and spicy hop flavor notes are there, along with some more light malt notes on the back end. Its got a bitter soapy finish too, which isn't as clean as I'd like. Slightly below average for the style. (346 characters)

BB 10-11-05. Poors in as a pilsner should having a great and lasting white head and a golden beercollor. looking better to it I noticed lots of haze and that for a quality pilsner. Not the best presentation for a filtered one. Nose is good though, no off tastes noticeable and a good malty and hoppy crracter. Hops reminding me of Hersbrucker and a very malty palate for a pilsner. Some alcohol completing the nose that's fresh.
Taste is also fresh and has good but not that high dosed bitterness, that keeps hanging in my mouth. Further again good maltpalate but IMO litle too much for a Pils and the whole beer reminds me more of a Helles then a pilsner. Easy drinkable and a good sesionbeer for a heavy night of drinking but there are lots of more enjoyable pilseners that I would prefer to drink. (801 characters)

Another decent German pilsner, very drinkable but not exactly craftsmanship. Pours a slighly cloudy golden color and gives respectable, if not mindblowing head. Smell has a melange of citrus, hops, and cereals,. Interesting.
A round, thick flavor with nice hoppy bitterness that does what its suppossed to do. Mouthfeel is a little grainy but I didn't mind it like with some beers.
Not an exquisite beer but tasty and goes down the hatch quite easily. This is workmanlike, blue collar beer typical of the style. (516 characters)

Crystal clear yellow-gold colour with a moderate short-lived head settling to a ring. Gives some lace early on.

Sharp grainy nose on a malt background. Fizzy bite, bitter hops, some malt. No really well pronounced flavours or aromas. Dry and hoppy. Your average Euro pils, good with a sandwich or sausage. (308 characters)

On tap at a local belfast bar

Pours with a light amber body, thick fluffy head sits atop, great retention

Smell, very clean, some hint of fresh grain

Taste, crisp and clean, dry mouthfeel, very easy to put down and refreshing

This is a much better beer on tap, a good session lager (293 characters)
