Haigys is sort of a strange place, but I always say never let first impressions get in the way of a good beer. On Pub-Crawls of Bradford, we would often stop at the Castle Hotel for the first beer of the day, and then move on to the New Beehive. The New Beehive forms one epoch of what is known as the Bradford Golden-Pub triangle. From the Beehive, you can then go to the Melborn Hotel, followed by Haigys; or vice-versa, we used to do the latter.
Haigys is in a colorful part of town, Lumb Lane has long been associated with women of the night, but although they have been moved on (allegedly) by residents, it still occasionally exhibits traits of its past late on a night. But that said, it is a safe area, so visitors should not be too concerned.
Haigys is one of those Bars that you just have to visit it has more character than you can shake a stick at, and shows the diversity of Beer Bars worldwide, as well as representing a unique kind of Pub that I have only ever found in England. Close to the local Football (Soccer) and Rugby League grounds, it can be very full when Bradford City FC, or Bradford Bulls RL, play at home.
A colorful mural painted exterior may make you wonder if you are in the right place believe me, you are. Inside, the Bar has a comfortable seating area, called somewhat laughingly a lounge, as well as a room with a Pool Table, and believe it or not, a Disco Room - resplendent with a Video Wall LOL. I told you this place is different.
That said, a visit during the day will mean that you will be sat with like minded beer drinkers. The Beer here is excellent, cared for and always on form. Regular beers from Black Sheep, Tetleys and Greene King are good, but the Guest Beers here are usually the attraction. Recently they have included a semi-regular-guest beer from the Ossett Brewery, which produces high quality beers of an immensely high standard; the journey is well worth the Ossett beer alone. The Landlord is affable and very knowledgeable and will happily while away the time talking about the beers he had over the many years he has been there.
Different, but thats what makes this place. It would not do for us all to be the same.
Well Worth a visit.
