Notes/Commercial Description:
Roasted Red Ale (First sold November 2007)

Switchback's Roasted Red Ale is a deep mahogany red colored ale. Unfiltered and naturally carbonated, this ale uses a combination of caramel and roasted malts and specially selected hops to create a beer with a flavor that leads with a rich malty sweetness balanced with a bold hop signature, followed by a luscious chocolate/cocoa roasty finish.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass, bottled on the 183 day of the year. Pours deep amber with a 2 inch off white head that leaves behind plenty of lace.

Smell is caramel, toffee, biscuit, pine, and some grapefruit

Taste follows well, some caramel and toffee up front, leads to some pine and citrus in the finish.

Body is almost medium, plenty of life, maybe a touch dry, and easy drinking.

Overall this is a solid amber ale, that can be drank all seasons.

I don't do written reviews often these days, but this beer deserved it, because it's probably the best red ale I've ever had! The roasiness is moderate but not overwhelming, which allows for some of the nutty aspects of grains to shine through. Hopping is moderate and very distinct yet perfectly balanced with the roasted malts, so that one does not overwhelm the other. I find most beers with roasted and hoppy aspects have difficulty balancing them so that one does dominate or feel like they are fighting against each other, but not so here! mouthfeel is moderate and the beer is refreshing. This is a very complex beer. The only real negative I noticed are the chunks of yeast swirling around that don't look very appetizing (maybe I should have been more careful with my pour). After finishing it I looked at the ABV and was very surprised that it was in the 5% range. Switchback packed a variety of perfectly balanced flavors into a relatively low ABV.

Poured from a bomber, no #freshbeer info.

Pours a very hazy, murky brown color with dull red tinges and a pock marked head that's quite healthy. Nuts and toasted malt in the aroma and also the same for the flavor. Would have liked more hops to shine through as this was ordinary enough.

This is easily the best offering from Switchback, and is the best red ale available in the state of Vermont. It is extremely balanced, a nice hop character that isn't overwhelming, and an awesome caramel, malty backbone. The only weird thing is that they offer this Spring-Fall, when I would much rather be drinking one of these from Fall-Spring. They should switch the availability between this and the slow-fermented brown in my opinion.
