Notes/Commercial Description:
Roasted Red Ale (First sold November 2007)

Switchback's Roasted Red Ale is a deep mahogany red colored ale. Unfiltered and naturally carbonated, this ale uses a combination of caramel and roasted malts and specially selected hops to create a beer with a flavor that leads with a rich malty sweetness balanced with a bold hop signature, followed by a luscious chocolate/cocoa roasty finish.

Had this on tap in downtown Burlington. A nice head with very good lacing throughout. A very intriguing roasted malty aroma. Not very bitter at all, but there were some subtly earthy tones. It had a great overall taste and a nice body that was a bit light although still very warm and full. If you see this in a bar make sure to get a pint of it!

First time having a beer from Switchback. A friend of mine (my source for Heady Topper) brought back one of these from his recent trip to Vermont

The initial pour was UN-eventful. A light reddish tone with a small but very dense head.,
The nose was somewhat surprising.. The previous red ale's that I've tasted, I never had that 'citrus' IPA-like nose. There was a definite aroma of grapefruit here.

The taste was full. Lots of malt going on here. Almost like a barley wine, yet the ABV is low.. Hard to make sense of that.

An enjoyable like beer, nothing to get excited about, nothing to find fault with.

I think the best aspect of this beer, is that the finish is so smooth, full and roasted all the way

From the 22 fl oz. bottle that seems to stamped 13148. Sampled on July 4, 2013.

The color is copper to brown with a slight haze and big head. No red that I can see.

On the nose I get a decent caramel malt note, citrus, and an earthy hop aroma. Smells pretty nice.

Medium body with a vague acidity.

The taste is up front malty and citrusy but only for a second as the earthy hops roar in from behind and leave a dry finish on the palate. Overall a pretty decent beer but just shy of what a red ale should be in my opinion.

A - Med amber colour with a small amount of white head

S - Citrus hops and sweet caramel malts. Fresh and balanced

T - Sweet caramel malts with a hint of toffee. Grapefruit and piney hops. Good balance, as the nose indicated

M - Medium body. Somewhat creamy. Light carbonation

Poured from the bottle into a stemless wine glass.

Deep copper red, a bit cloudy, with a two finger light tan head. Ring like lacing while drinking and a creamy puck on top.

Bouquet seems to have some mild caramel, subtle hints of florality with a bit of brown sugar sweetness. Subtle and simple, nothing too crazy or mindblowing just fine.

Palate comes with a light body. Slight hints of toasty brown bread, with mild caramel sweetness. Slight crackling texture and grainy flavor. Minimal hop presence with light carbonation and a good coating feel and palate coating. Fleeting aftertaste and finish that doesn't stick around.

Overall an ok amber ale, but really limiting on flavor and drive.

Appearance - It has an amber red color with pretty minimal head.

Smell - Was kinda sweet with some malt thrown in there. I didn't pay too much attention to the smell once i tasted this amazing beer.

Taste - It is the perfect balance of malt and hops. When you first take a sip its just so smooth and then as it goes down the throat you pick up a little bit of the bitterness. This is my new favorite beer.

Mouthfeel - It is a very smooth beer, it left my mouth watery.

Drinkability - I can't wait to have another one. Switchback needs to come out and sell there beer in bottles.

Consumed 10/9/14

A: Medium amber, with some caramel around the edges - lightly cloudy - pours with a small, off-white cap, fades to a few wisps, leaves a few spots of lacing

S: Pale malts, caramel malts, with a touch of citrus - caramel grains, toast, light biscuits, and a touch of toffee - light, bready sweetness - some floral citrus, with a hint of grapefruit - definitely mild overall

T: Grainy bread - very grainy, with pale and caramel malts - light toast, with some floral citrus - low bitterness - lightly roasty with a lingering earthiness - some light fruits - light sweetness and toffee

M: Medium body, light carbonation, earthy finish

O: Yup, it's a red

This definitely tastes like a beer from Switchback, and that is not a bad thing. It's very drinkable. Unfortunately, this is probably the most mild and unexciting beer I've ever had from Switchback. It would be good with food, but it's not as inherently tasty as their other offerings.

Poured from a bomber, no #freshbeer info.

Pours a very hazy, murky brown color with dull red tinges and a pock marked head that's quite healthy. Nuts and toasted malt in the aroma and also the same for the flavor. Would have liked more hops to shine through as this was ordinary enough.
