Notes / Commercial Description:
Slow-Fermented Brown Ale (available August 2nd 2010)

The newest offering from Switchback Brewing Company, Slow-Fermented Brown Ale is a beautiful chestnut brown colored beer. It is fermented at an unusually cool temperature which slows down the fermentation. These conditions stress the yeast, resulting in a slow methodical fermentation in which the resultant flavors are clean, somewhat like a lager, with the added characteristic of a creamy smooth mouthfeel. This brown ale has a rich roast caramel flavor, with a subtle sweetness in the finish, delicately balanced with hop undertones.

Im a HUGE fan of the pale ale, so I went in with open mind on this one. Really excited. It wasnt as stand-out as the pale ale. A good beer, but not as unique as their original offerings. This beer is not too dissimalar from most browns i've had. I'm not sure what slow fermenting does here. I'll surely drink again, but my mind was not blown.

On tap poured into a pint glass.

Pours a dark hazy brown color with a small white head with light white lacing.

Taste is sweet and malty with a light hoppiness that's really refreshing and nice but not too bitter. It's a really tasty beer that's well balanced.

Bought in Vermont a t Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury. Beer pours with a brown appearance in the light and a foamy brownish-white head that dissipates into a ring around the glass with little retention. Aromas do include some roasted nuts with coffee and chocolate, but its pretty light. The taste is decently sweet with a light malt mixed with cocoa, caramel, and a very light feeling of dark fruit. The mouthfeel helps the beer maintain a medium crispness in a creamy textured drink. Overall, not too bad with its best attributes in taste and mouthfeel.

Interesting spin on brown ale. Pours dark copper with a lasting clingy half-finger of tan foam - looks great. Smell was the weakest point for me as it's dominated by earthy, even slightly sour, notes among the slight malt and just-detectable nut. Flavor is better, with more malt coming out alongside the lager-ish-ness. Mouthfeel is a little thin, but understandable for low abv.
