Had a couple of these with dinner on this Cinco de Mayo '06. Haven't had Dos XX in a couple years, what the heck? From the 12oz. green bottle pours a light golden lager with a finger of white bubbly head. The carbonation is good, the head dies quickly, even so.

Light sweet malt with a mild hopness in the nose. Pretty much smells like your average Amercan macro, it didn't do much for this Barleywiner (me).

Yeah, a few sips...gee I haven't been missing much. Very typical, some what bland, macro lager flavor...until the meal came. Ahhh, with the crispy quesadilla, salsa, frejoles and such... this beer started to shine.

Light body, average mouthfeel, light to moderate ABV, you can drink this as you would water. With the meal, it made the beer more than enjoyable. I'll do it again sometime, although I do prefer Bohemia, but that will be a different review...

Cheers to Mexico !

A standard beach-beer. Why are there no good beers sold at the beach? Anyhow, this one, albeit grainy and bite-ey has a cleanliness and crispness with it. Sweetness is low in the aromas and flavors. Again, the malt profile included adjunct grains and contribute a vegetable flavor. Flavors fade leaving a light medicinal flavor remaining. More bite-ey toward the finish. A little dry. Still a thirst quincher, but not for serious beer tasting.

pours a pale gold with little head and absolutely no lacing. Smells overly yeasty with slight lemon zest aromas.

A very average beer. Albeit nice balance with the same yeasty lemon, lime flavors. The mouthfeel as anticipated leaves something to be desired. No complexity, or backbone.

One good attribute of this beer would be it's drinkability on a warm summer day. If you want to drink six or more this could be a somewhat decent option.

Poured this beer in Zihuatanejo and Puerto Vallarta and it tasted so good, being so hot out side. This has to be my best Mexican beer, second is Modelo Especial. The rest of the Mexican beer you can have. This had a nice clean flavor and had a fairly nice balance of hops and malts. Not over powering flavor, just medium mild and a good quincher on hot muggy days.

I was really disappointed with this beer. All of my friends are like oh man it's so good. It's so different from any thing else. It's typical beer. It's nothing special. I don't know why people like this. It's overpriced. I wouldn't say it's much different from american lagers.
If it was cheaper I'd say go for it and drink it. You won't be disappointed, but you won't be impressed.

this beer has a milder taste than a lot of lagers, but its special. a great alternative to corona this beer has a real nice sweeter smell with a citric afterstaste, nice and hoppy. poured with a medium head not much to brag about. thought this beer tasted very nice. i will undoubtedly drink it again. recommended especially for lighter drinkers.

Straight from the bottle, it's a rather bland beer. There's no noteworthy characteristics about the nose and I'm going to have to assume that the head and lacing is pretty much in line with just about every other American style Macro Lager. Nothing out of the ordinary. Taste is not bad, nothing at all to complain about except the fact that it doesn't have more flavor. You could easily forget what you're drinking with this one because there's absolutely nothing that stands out about it. Flavor and mouthfeel are like a better, more pleasant Budweiser, but even less memorable. You could drink this beer like water. It's got no inherent flaws other than being entirely generic.

Stole this bottle from my gf... I have had this many times before, but have never particularly liked it, nor had the desire to review it... but let's see how well it holds up under scrutiny.

Same appearance as any other macro.... pale yellow in color.... tons of carbonation via the tremendous amount of bubbles rising to the surface. While I initially believed the head (initially 1/2") might set it apart, it quickly disipated, all the while making an obnoxious cola-like fizz.

Smells like a mix of malt and corn-based macro-mix... at least the malt is in there.

Noticeable malt in the flavour, but not enough to offset the skunk-ish flavour in there as well. Fairly bland really.

Terribly thin in the mouth, and tremendously carbonated... bleh... just done all wrong (although I'm not sure there is a right way to do macros... maybe Miller High Life or PBR set a better example)

Drinkable, but only because of its thin-ness. Everything about this beer is terrible below par for me. Excessively carbonated, iffy taste, little in the way of aroma.

Final thought: About how I thought it would fare... I'll stick to buying this at cheap Mexican restaurants where the only other option is Corona.

1st half of a verticle Dos Equis tasting ;-)...

Appearance: Clear gold body, no head, moderate visible carbonation.

Smell: Stale bread and cooked vegetables. Pretty bad, even for a Mexican beer.

Taste: Not a very strong flavor, but what there is is pretty bad, adjunct-corn, also some cereal graininess. Bad.

Drinkability: I will pass on this one ever again, and not recomend it to anyone. There are much better beers for the price.

Well, the notes are below, but to summarize, this wasn’t too bad, just didn’t pack much punch. Looks like the amber is slightly better.

XX had a decent enough pour, dark amber with a tan head, decent lacing. Aroma (almost non-existent) and taste were sub par. Too much ol’ corn in the quaff, slight off-adjunct taste, a little bland, earthy and bitter.

So, it’s dry and cripe, all in all not bad – it’s middle of the road stuff, and when better options are available on tap, it lags behind.

I just got back from an all inclusive resort in Playa Del Carmen Mexico. The weather was great, the beach was great, the food was great, unfortunately this is the only beer on tap at the resort. There was Dos Equis amber, Tecate and Superior at the al a carte restaraunts and that completed the beer options.

Anyways, its as very pale gold beer with a fizzy shortlived head. Lacing is not very impressive. The aroma is light and sweetish, rather grainy. The taste is Grainy and again sweet. Theres more malt flavor then in Canadian macros for sure. The hops are too minimal. It has a bready lightly bitter and corny finish. The mouthfeel is strongly carbonated and watery.

This is a rather watery international lager that still is more flavorful than Bud or Canadian. Its pretty refreshing in the heat on the beach but doesnt have much flavor or complexity to offer.

Hmm, I sit here not hating this beer cause I'm thirsty and tired but in reality this is a fairly watery lager that has little real character. The nose is ciderlike( a sign of age) but the taste is still ok. Hints of corn but not too sweet in the finish make this ok fresh in a Mexican bar but not worth paying import prices for.

Poured a little pale, very thin head. Smelled of a standard macro, straight up.

The taste was not particularly robust or complex; it was mildly grainy, but I did drink this at a Mexican restaurant, and had the benefit of both chasing some fajitas with it and accompanying it with a lime wedge, which was quite complimentary.

Consuming it in an ideal setting undoubtedly added to my experience, which was enjoyable, so I'm edging up the points on taste and drinkability. I'm very likely to drink a beer like this in a similar situation in the future, and I'm not going to penalize a brew for playing to its strengths.

This poured a light golden, fizzy head with no retention.
smell was vaguely of grains, maybe a whiff of apple.
taste was smooth and watery, no unpleasant tastes, just not much taste at all.
mouthfeel is thin and watery, slight slickness.
drinkability is good for what this is, which is a Mexican Lager, nothing really "special" about it, but it isn't off putting either, not a bad lawnmower brew.

Dos Equis Special Lager
12 oz green bottle
Served in a 16 oz pilsner glass

Pours a golden yellow with mini carbonation bubbles rising toward the top of the glass. No head retention with the slightest ring of lace on top of the beer.

Bland nose with a hint of grains and honey sweetness.

The mouthfeel is very crisp and fully carbonated. Tastes of cereal, corn and rice. A clean beer with a sweet malt presence. Flavors tend to me more grainy than anything.

A middle of the road lager. Nothing special about this beer.

I don't particularly like this beer. It is clear staw colored sparkly fizz. It does have some sweeter malty smell to it. And the taste is malty, unbalanced, tinny, and just too acidic for me. Light and crisp. Drinkable only because it is light and isn't so bad out of the bottle.

Dos Equis Special Lager pours a clear bright golden amber from a 12oz light green glass bottle. Head of white foam goes to just over one finger before collapsing to a full ring of foam with a broken carpet of fine bubbles.

Nose is a damp malt with hints of hops and not much else. Palate is a carbonated first impression of light barley malt and a slight corn adjunct.

First and foremost, the carbonation plays a large roll with the mouth feel. As far as the malt and adjunct go, they are in the background with the hops just starting to work at the very end, too little, too late.

A light bodied lager, well suited for hot weather in the Southern climes, not for the fall season in mid America

Pours a full gold color and is brilliantly clear; it is well carbonated but cant really manage to hold more than a wisp of a pale head. The aroma is lightly spicy with just a bit of hops; there is also a note of sweet grain. The beer is quite thin on the palate, and other than a little bitterness does not linger at all. The taste is crisp and flavorless up front, but manages to finish with a bit of hop bitterness and a sweet thin graininess. As expected there is not much to this beer, it is fairly clean, except for the sweet grainy character. Really not much to say about this.

Like most of the lager beers, its blond color, and low fermentation, without abuse of hops, beach favorite beer, good with seafood and chinese cuisine; smell give an alcaline sensation, smell plane, soft; mouthfeel and drinkability under the average, is not common in my city. 78% recommended.

Clear gold color with a decent white head, only a trace of lace left behind.

The aroma is very mild, grassy with just a bit of sweet malt. Light bodied, with a pleasant hops flavor.

A bit watery and thin on malt flavor. Not a lot of taste but drinkable. Nothing to get exited about. Probably good with tacos.

Clear, pale yellow in hue, I’ve seen this color of beer all too often. White foam topped the beer, at the apex the head was less then a half finger in height. It slowly faded to a thin, soapy cap. This cap had fair staying power; it subsided to a wispy collar. There was no subsequent lacing. The appearance could be better.

The nose is clean… for awhile. The first hints of hay were welcoming (and bit surprising), then the aromas turned sweet. It had that cheap adjuncty underbelly but no sign of being stored in a green bottle. At cooler temperatures the nose is inoffensive, the potency is low. I can’t help but say… meh. It is almost neutral but that tickle of sweetness is too much for me.

The palate is much cleaner then I was expecting it to be. I figured it would have at least some “green bottle” aromas, not skunked but that Euro Lager imported vibe. Upfront I detected… um, well, not much, just some hay. Ditto for the middle… yawn. At the finish that cheap, adjunct sweetness developed and it lasted into the aftertaste. I don’t like that taste at all. Honestly, it wasn’t offensive but it doesn’t jive with me. It is too sweet; it needs hops and more malt. Typical Pale Lager, if it is your thing then have at it.

Medium in body, low but natural carbonation, the mouthfeel fits this beer well even if it is uneventful.

I found this to be sub par in the drinkability realm; I think water or iced tea would be a much better alternative. As a beer I have no desire to drink this one again. I’ve not had any Mexican food that this would be good with, not even Taco Bell. I purchased my bottle in Omaha. Skip it.

Worst beer in Mexico ever!, plus the light ones. Maybe, the lager concept was mistaken by light, because this beer ahs been always very light, water flavor and easy to get spoiled with a little heat over it. Some amateur drinkers like it because of it smootness and not getting drunk so easy.

Pours a crystal clear yellow-gold. Thick frothy snow-white head. Lots of bubbles and nice lacing. Smells grassy, lightly or sweet fruit and just a touch of herbal hops.

Taste is much less grassy and much more sweet fruity malt. A hint of hops in the finish. A nice crispness to finish it off. Rinse your tongue and repeat. Thin and fizzy, clean finish, some fruity aftertaste not much else. Is not too drinkable for a pale lager. Not bad, not good. A suitable alternative to the Big 3 is you MUST have a beer somewhere.

On draft at the Soiled Dove in Denver, CO.

This is a pretty unimpressive, bland, macro lager, very similar to the big American ones. I can't name one redeeming quality of it except that it's watered down and easy to drink if you're in the mood for something bland that won't fill you up. Might as well just drink a Bud or Coors.

Pours a crystal clear pale gold. One finger head with good retention and sticky lacing are two aspects you won't find in many other Macros. However, the European influence on Mexican beer is heavily percieved in the taste and smell. Skunky hops and spicy grain dominate, while lending a dry bittness and smooth mouthfeel. Light to medium body and good carbonation with a clean finish. Not very different, but certainly better than the average macro or euro lager.
