Got it from a closed cardboard case so it should be unskunked. No freshness date. Busted it out shortly after biking home in the summer heat... if there was ever a time for a Sol, it's now.
Clear, pale yellow body, one-bubble-thick head, large bubbles rising lazily. Head retention is lousy but there are some curtains of lace (!!) clinging to the sides of the glass halfway through.
Smells of corn, a little grassy. Some rice. Clean smell.
Very, very clean taste. Not much there, but hey, that's the aim of the style. A grainy start, a slight grassy/metallic hop note, and then it glides into a "clear" finish that is totally devoid of taste, while cold. Definite sour note as it warms -- keep this bad boy chilled.
Mouthfeel is light, just like water. Not as bubbly as La Croix, otherwise pretty similar.
Drinkability is excellent, I could go to town on case of cold Sol. Dinged only for cost and availability. Sol would be the college party beer of choice if sold for $10/30pack like Key Light.
I feel dirty giving this such high marks but hey, it's not trying to be an IPA. It is definitely, definitely better than the majority of macro lagers out there. Within the style, a surprisingly good brew.
