Brown in color with a tanned head. Nothing interesting about the look, and the foam is poor. No lacing from this bottle.

Nose is too clean, with a slight skunkiness. Malts are caramelized but only just faintly. Maybe an herbal tea note. Weak.

Same for the flavor. Malt drives the flavor but there isn't a lot. Toasted notes, some black tea, hint of diacetyl, and carbonation notes. Body is light and overcarbonated, finish is super fast.

Hints of hazelnut and coffee save this from being really bad, but it's not far off. Fortunately it's not cloyingly sweet like some other Cuauhtemoc brews...

*300th Review*

A bunch of numbers are on the bottle, but there are a few separate ones that read "11 2013", so I assume that means drink by November. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: A hazy brown with about a finger of a tan-ish head. The head doesn't last long, and the beer only leaves a slight ring around the glass. Patchy lacing.

Smell: Sweet grains. Traces of some sort of dark fruit like plum or raisin. Doesn't seem to be of the highest quality, but it doesn't smell bad.

Taste: The dark fruit sort sweetness is on the front, and then the rest is some slightly roasted malt to take away from some of that sweetness. There's no real bitterness in this beer, but that malt character does help to keep this from being cloying. On some sips I pick up a faint metallic note, but I'd rather have that over skunkiness any day, which this beer doesn't have. The mouthfeel is pretty thin, with just a little bit of carbonation.

Overall, this beer is just alright. Highly forgettable. The thing that gets me about this beer is the pretentious bottle -- wrapped in foil as if this is a really rare treat. I'd not be opposed to having it again, but it's just too "blah" for me to warrant ever buying it.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a straight-sided glass.

Appearance: rich amber hue with a clear body and moderate effervescence. Head poured two fingers of frothy ivory foam with decent retention.

Smell: malty aroma with a bit of caramel and a big of bready/biscuity flavor. Not my favorite, but decent and pretty clean.

Taste: malty with a fair bit of caramel and a tiny hint of chocolate. The bready and biscuity character from the aroma is much more subdued here. More of a dark lager than a Vienna lager, I'd say, but overall quite tasty indeed.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a good level of carbonation and a surprising creaminess. I like it.

Overall: this is a tasty and drinkable lager, and while it may not be quite stylistically accurate, I quite like it. Would definitely have again.

This is the prize winner of the Bohemia family in my opinion. It goes down smooth for a 5.5% and leaves your palette clean and ready for more. With its overtones of both caramel and toasted nuts, it combines well with its floral and slight metallic taste. If you enjoy a quality 'indio' (a darkish mexican beer) you need look no further. It has a very sweet scent, but its overall finish is very dry and flavorsome. Anyone whom has experienced their fair share of typical mexican beers knows that this is something that is often lacking. Though this is no craft beer, it hones craft beer elements and can be found in most drinking establishments at a slightly higher price than the usual suspects. I first encountered Bohemia Obscura at La Opera bar in Mexico City and it quickly became my go to beer after a long day. It's taste is far more augmented than the usual suspects over at the 15 peso bars that cloud up high volume areas like centro and zona rosa. Overall, when in Mexico, this is the perfect beer to drink when you are not lazing in the sun on the beach.
A quick observation: i have been told by a friend that Bohemia uses artificial colors and additives in it brewing process and that it will give you rather nasty hangover. Though i can advocate the former to be false nor true, i can say that i have yet to experience any kind of hangover from Bohemia Obscura, even at times drinking more than a dozen in one evening.
