"Estilo Bock" 2010 edition

This beer was thrown into the communal ice bucket during New Years, where it lingered & subsequently became property of the operator of the establishment... me. :D

A sticky glob of parchment-colored Cool Whip floats a top my Ommegang Anniversary glass. Clear antique maple wood stain, with a rich deep orange hue. Erratic misshapened lace blots the glass.

Smells big of malted cereal, brown sugar, & grain alcohol. Oxidized potatoes, leather, & sticky beer residue make up smaller nuances.

Glassy texture. Metallic charr, with caramel notes. Bland grain. Beef broth?! Newspaper. This bottle is CostCo fresh, but tastes old. Thin. Carbonation is lively. The finish is subtly sweet with some yet to be determined starch(boiled corn husks?).

I could maybe swallow this better with some Ritz crackers & some of those ugly gift basket cheese spreads I've been gifted over the holidays. But then I wouldn't have any ammo left to pass off to unwanted guests.

Vintage 2011 which means this awful beer has been made for many years and I have no idea why that is.

Look: Dark amber color with 1/4 inch head and no retention

Smell: Smells the same as every other Mexican beer. Awful

Taste: This one has a bit of caramel that disguises the dirty mexican water taste but its still bad

Mouthfeel: Thin and lightly carbonated

Overall: Yet another bad beer that the mass populous love

12 ounce bottle poured into Efes tulip. 2011 vintage. Pour seems quite still. Zero lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel crossed with overripe banana. Mouthfeel is thin and taste is not offensive but really nothing exciting. Reminds me of a stale Yuengling more than a bock. Like a flat amber instead of a bock. Easy to drink, just not enjoyable.

2011 bottle.

A: Poured into a beer mug. Very clear dark coppery amber, not a lot of head, little retention and no lacing.

S: Slightly metallic, a bit of grain and burnt sugar. Smells weak but like a bock.

T: Mildly sweet caramel and burnt sugar, dry corn and grain, metallic aftertaste and just a hint of esters.

M: Thin and watery, thin carbonation. Bitter (but not from hops) finish, fairly dry.

O: Drinkable when icy cold, but really not a very good beer. It doesn't seem much different than Dos Equis Amber.

Rich and clean Mexican beer smell.

Beautiful red orange appearance

It went downhill with the taste. It's as devoid of substance as a keystone.

The mouthfeel is bubbly, like champaign. It feels artificially carbonated. If you like bubbly water, you might like this.

Speaking of bubbly water, it tastes watered down.

I found myself just waiting for this beerish drink to be over.

Received this as a gift from BA Borrachito at the Strong Ale Festival at the Carlsbad Pizza Port on 6 December. Really wasn't sure what this beer would turn out like. Turned out it was quite unremarkable.
This Mexican brew had a clear ochre color and a fairly good-sized bubbly off-white head. The head quickly shrank down to a skim despite the lively carbonation. The smell was a blend of earthy malts and some corn syrup with a rather unappealing lightly sulphurous aroma. The taste was a listless mix of caramel and grainy malt flavors with a vague hops bite in the finish. The feel was thin and watery.
This beer really isn't much to get excited about. It's basically a boring, not-quite-average dark lager.

Pours out clear dark brown with red hues when held to the light. Head is nice, thick, and with decent retention. Not too much lacing on this one. The nose is grainy with a mix of citrus and floral hops and solid malt backbone. Extremely light on flavor. A little bit of grains and a little bit of metal. Hops are almost nonexistent and the malts have vanished. Mouth feel is watery at best with hints of carbonation. This beer went downhill fast. Never will I buy this again.

bottle courtesy of fly. Thanks!
Pours a clear maroon color with a medium sized beige head. Smell is toasty caramel like malt. Taste is nutty and toasty flavored malt with a hint of bitterness. Medium bodied and pretty decent actually for what I expected. Flavor ist still on the thin side, but not bad.

2008 edition 12oz bottle
Clear chestnut amber or light brown color, hardly a thing ring of head.

Smells like a Dos XX amber. kinda skunky, bit of sweet bready malt, but mostly carbonic lager smell.

Taste is pretty lacking. A lot less taste than even the smell suggests. I'm guessing its the heavy carbonation that masks everything.taste is not sweet, just kinda weird. The g/f says it smells/tastes like vomit, but I don't think its quite that bad.

Heavy stinging carbonation, like sparkling water or soda feel.

On the scale of beer in general this beer ranks pretty low, but it's not that far from my expectations.

I think this is just an adjunct lager with a little caramel coloring. If this is rated as a bock, it's pretty much at the bottom of the barrel. Back in the 1970s, we used to be happy to see this stuff around the holidays. It was dark, which made it special. But I also think that back in the day Noche Buena had a sweeter, slightly richer caramel taste.

This just tastes faintly of caramel malt and surprisingly bitter. Maybe with the price of hops the less-particular of the industrial brewers are using some rock bottom variety that gives a little bitter zing without breaking the budget.

The mouthfeel is quite spritzy and tastes like club soda. Dark amber color in the glass. The typical wet cardboard smell. From the bottle into a plastic cup at the neighborhood street celebration. At least I still have my memories.

2011 edition. gold-foiled 355ml bottle.

It pours a clear reddish brown with a creamy off-white head.

The smell is actually not too bad. It smells like noble hops and some pleasant carmally malts.

The flavor is more of a disappointment, it shows is Mexicaness. It has a it of metal, herbal notes form the hops, some muddled sweetness, and overall not that great.

A: Light amber color with fizzy, tan head that dissipates quickly.
S: sweet malt character with some corn thrown in there for good measure
T: slightly sweet malts, grainy with a lightly toasted taste. Medium carbonation with large bubbles. Honestly, not all that bad.

pours out a clear mahoghany colour with a some sparse foam and lace. graininess on the nose with some cocoa and nougat aromas...hints of caramel and ripe fruit, too. smells nice enough. the flavour profile is a touch light in the shorts...it has crisp notes of bock related maltiness...some herbal and spice hop nuances. it notches just above a dark lager, but falls a bit short of seeming like a full fledged bock. the mouthfeel is crisp and a touch metallic, with an overall medium light body. it blurs the line between trying to be easily drinkable and full flavoured.

overall this isn't bad, but nothing really stands out as being special. therefor it falls a bit short of being worth seeking out. glad i got my bottles for free.

Took a bottle of this home from a Christmas party out of a holiday 24 pack.

A- Dark copper color with a reddish hue. Large light tan head that shrinks to a small layer that stays long after the pour. Good lacing stuk to the side of the glass.

S- Roasted malts and a sharp citrus smell from the hops. Also a strange metallic smell coming through on the nose, a little off puting and seems to overpower everything else.

T- Seems a little light for a bock. Slight citrus notes, buiscits, a little bit of chocolate, and an off puting metalic taste, simlilar to the smell. Finished slightly bitter. Mouthfeel is solid.

Seems solid in everything other than smell and taste. I don't know what to make of that. The pour was awesome, but that certain metallic taste and smell seemed to keep it from being a great beer.

As it sets in the glass a transpicuous mahogany color with a substantial light tan head that is semi-creamy in texture with a fine veil of lace to obscure the glass. Sweet malt nose with light hints of caramel, clean and crisp with the front sweet and lightly malted, top is thin in its feel. Finish has a moderate carbonation and the hops apropos to the style with the aftertaste being dry, drinkable, but a bit thin waisted for me. A new beer for me from Mexico, just when I think I've had them all, received this one at the "Strong Ale Fest Beer Swap".

From bottle...poured in small tulip glass.
Copper brown color. Small head.
Aroma of toasted malts, toffee, caramel, tobacco.
Significant carbonation...modest mouthfeel.
Flavors of medium sweet malts, minerals, citrus, water. More malt than light Mexican beer have, certainly, but light compared to Christmas - Holiday beers, or as it says "Estilo Bock." All in all, compared to the big beers I drink I would call this a session brew with slight caramel malt body.

Dark brown color. Small white foamy head. Aroma is malty, caramel and toast. A medium bodied Vienna. Malts are nutty and very slightly sweet. Hops are slightly spicy. A crisp and clean beer. It may be a bit watery, but its certainly a nice Mexican beer. It would be a good beer for a warm summer day, to bad it’s a Christmas Beer…. I do like this beer though. Mouthfeel is a touch thin, but rounded. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Reads 5.4% by Vol. on bottle. I have not seen this beer in the stores since the early 80's back then it was one of the best on store shelves. We used to go out of our way to buy this malty beer. I paid $13.99/12pk today oh well...

Appearance- is average deep brown and clear. Pours and holds a good head.
Smell- whisp's of alcohol and caramel
Taste- first taste was cheap alcohol, adjuct grain or sugar then malt finish
mouthfeel-First sip bites you a little, after that it gets a little smoother, finish is dry.
Overall- ok, I put in the american bock catagory not horrible but not of a german breed.
I think its a Dos EquisXX Amber with some boost added to it. It tastes like that exactly.
One of the best beers from mexico

12oz bottle poured into pilsner glass - thanks jess!

Pours a clear caramel brown color with some slightly brighter auburn and burnt orange hues. A thick beige head bubbles up, retaining well with patchy lacing on the glass.

Some toasted malts with grain and faint caramel sweetness. Light suggestions of dark fruit such as dates, and a touch of soapiness.

Fairly soft up front with some toasted malts and caramel. Touches of fruit sweetness and burnt sugar, but very faint. Very subdued flavor in general, to be honest.

Medium body, nice carbonation, slightly creamy and smooth on the tongue. A pretty boring bock flavorwise, although it looked and felt pretty nice.

2011 Limited edition.

A: Looks good, lots of head and lacing.

S: Stale coffee, toffee, hot nuts.

T: Toasted malts, brown sugar, some decent bitterness at the end.

M: A bit of a metallic aftertaste. Gets a bit too corn syrupy towards the end. Not offensive though.

O: Decent, just barely good.

A: Clear yet with a mild body. pours a brownish scarlet hue.

S: Burnt sugar and caramel.

T: not so great, quite watery and not the aged taste yoid expect. but the lager makes it thin.

M: too thin, too light and slightly chemically tasting.

O: sadly this is revered as one of the best coming from mexico. so be it.

Clear, brown colored lager with an amber glow. Thick bubbles of carbonation stream upward from the bottom of the glass. The foam is off-white, about a half-inch thick to start, holding nice as a thin film never completely dissipates. Clean, mild aroma with a light doughy sweetness. It's nice but faint, and I would like to get a bit more from it.

The taste has a light bready zest, with a hint of fruit. Subtle bitterness at the back. Not much to be real thrilled about. It's all a bit watered down and ultimately doesn't hold my attention for long. Medium body, average carbonation. Tastes mild in alcohol strength.

Overall a decent Bock beer, nothing special but relatively well made.

Poured from a bottle into a pilsner glass.

A - Clear amber with fizzy one-finger head which dissolved quickly. Surprisingly sturdy rings of lacing.

S - Mild aroma of lightly toasted grains and lager yeast.

T - Dextrin sweet graininess forward, with some spicy pilsner-esque hops taking over in the finish, also adding the slightest hint of fruitiness. A pasty taste starting in the mid-palate suggests the presence of adjuncts. Not offensive, but not good either.

M - Light bodied, with prickly carbonation. Appropriate for the taste profile. Probably the best thing about this beer.

O - Mild, inoffensive, and unimpressive. Definitely not a good representation of the style. Adjunct/dextrin tastes spoil what may have had some potential.

Bottle poured into a pint glass from a local brewery in Cabo San Lucas. I recall drinking this beer before my craft days, thinking that it was some sort of dark god. How times have changed. This reddish brown concoction may stand out a bit in a landscape of yellow fizzy beach brews but is an average bock at best, below average truth be told. Does show some light tan head but with a curiously fizzy thin body and an aroma that is strangely alcohol-forward, boozy and medicinal rather than richly sweet and fruity, although I do get a whiff of cherry cough syrup. The flavor is devoid of clear roasted or chocolate elements. There are some cherry, sultana raisin, and peach notes poking out here and there along with a brown sugar backbone that somehow manages to underperform compared to a brew like Negra Modelo. I am having to pay too much attention to taste the fruit notes and I'm simply not getting the big dark molasses flavor others are claiming. Like a Mexican Shiner Bock. Finish is on the grainy and medicinal side. Its not awful but I think I'll refrain from buying a 12-pack next time.

Nice munich malt aroma. Just a little hint of hops.

Brown and clear with a nice tan head.

Sweet malt flavor is dominant but there's good hop bitterness. Very light hop flavor in the aftertaste.

Flavor is bock-like but body and mouthfeel are pretty watery for that style.

Not a bad beer and probably one of the better ones from Mexico. But not a particularly exciting beer either.
