500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.3%. Hazy brown colour, large and lasting off-white head. Strong and pleasant aroma of banana and cloves, also caramel and fresh brown bread. The flavour is not too sweet, but has some caramel, also citrus, brown bread, banana and cloves again. Low bitterness, as normal for the style. Very refreshing.

From the bottle, it pours a solid brown with an off-whitehead that eventually dissipates to a solid ring. in the nose, it was a bit bready. in the mouth, it is also bready with a touch of roast malt.

Hazy brown color with off-white head. Aroma has toasted malt, caramel, brown sugar and candied banana. Taste follows with toasted malt, burnt sugar and some overripe banana. Medium body with medium minus carbonation. Quite nice, well made dunkelweizen.

Bottled in 330ml with flip top
Poured nice brown with a great head that diminished quickly. Moderate carbonation and light on the palate. Reminded me of a lighter Hefe - not exactly sure what I was expecting. Light citrus notes also.

Pale chestnut with creamy pitted white head that fades fast. Big waxy banana nose.
Freshy doughy whole wheat loaf up front with some clove and nutmeg to finish.
Mashed banana finish and numbing linger. Light, soft, fizzy.

As simple as can be. The bare bones of a dunkelweiss, with no depth and no surprises, thin and a bit too lively. Could drink this all afternoon without thinking - is that a good thing or a bad thing?

This beer has a ton of potential!
A: Pours a gorgeous brownish, almost greenish color with a nice carbonated head that retains decently....the lacing is decent

S: Eh, I did not care for the nose on this one. At first, I got a "wet paint" note right off the bat, followed by a nice breeze of wheat and sweet malts, caramel, and yeast

T: Very sweet notes of caramel and molasses. Malts are present, and the "wet paint" note faded away

MF: Perfect! Very smooth and silky going down. Medium body, and a nice aftertaste

D: High! This is a session beer!

I would recommend this beer as a "gateway" beer for all of your friends who are macro drinkers! I literally converted 2 people as I write this!

Poured from 12 oz bottle into weizen glass.

A - Murky brown, with about a finger of head. Short retention, though a thick cap remains. Moderate lacing.

S - There is almost no smell to this, especially considering style. Slight bready aroma, vaguely like bananas, and a predominance of wheat malt. Everything is so muted and indistinct that I'm not sure what I'm picking up on.

T - Boring and bland as well. A weak toasty flavor tries to make itself known, but fades away with a whimper as a nasty sour note from the wheat malt grows late palate, only to fall to a strange, quick bitterness.

M - I actually wish this brew tasted better, because the mouthfeel is superb. Almost no carbonation, with a nice thick, creamy body. Quite pleasing from a tactile standpoint.

D - This is ok, if you want something flavorless...but if you want something flavorless why reach for a dunkel, right? I didn't get the banana-nut-bread-in-a-glass kind of flavor I was hoping/looking for. It this brew was any more attenuated, it'd be hard to tell it was a dunkelweizen at all.

Poured from the bottle it was not quite as out of control as a weizen could be. Deep brown hazy brew with much lighter head. Smells of banana bread and citrus. Not much clove here. Beer is a little fizzy in the mouth but otherwise is fair to the style. This is a decent enough brew, but Wiehenstephaner just seems to make Hefe's so much better than evceryone else.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle, best before 8/30/08

P: Pours a cola brown under a fingers worth of brown head. No lace, little retention.

S: Skunky/musky mixed with some banana and wheat. Maybe some caramel too, a very interesting combination. Some clove and light spice. The skunkiness that I initially smelled from the pop of the cap actually subsides very quickly, so it gets better. Some hints of butter, almost like buttered popcorn, as well.

T: No skunk, happy to report, but it tastes a lot like your typical Euro macro lager but with some dunkel character thrown in. Banana is very light as well as clove. Some bubble gum as well

M/D: High carbonation, light and watery. Drinkability is OK at best. I've been on a big Dunkelweizen kick lately and this has to be one of the worst I have sampled, it just screams macro lager at many points.

A - Poured a nice hazelnut brown, very clear, and with ample carbonation producing a nice two inch white foamy head. This quickly faded leaving behind nothing more then a thin film on top and a decent side glass lace presence. Very nice overall look though and there was definitely an unfiltered presence as the sediment was just well, settling down to the bottom.

S – Aroma was full of wheat as one would expect from it. Lots of earthy and grain like tones that were mixed in with and accented very nicely by a bit of a yeasty presence. The aroma was slightly musty with a touch of a bready like quality, much thicker then I thought it would be.

T – Very nice here. A very rich full bodies flavor would be the best way to describe it. Normally I find wheat beers to always have the same overall flavor profile, however this one was a step up, and maybe due to the dark wheat. The flavor just seemed to come off as a bit more complex with a lot of earthy and grain like flavors. There was defiantly a lot of yeast and wheat mixed in and I even picked up the presence of some dark fruit like flavors. Overall very pleasing and a very nice palate about it. A nice smokey kind of flavor started to settle in towards the end of the session and almost gave it kind of a smoked presence in the finish.

M – Very clean, but not as crisp as I would have thought. There was defiantly an underlying slickness to it. Some kind of slippery feel that kept it from having that clean cut off you normally get. It wasn’t distracting at all, but rather served to prolng the flavor and give it a little more depth. The carbonation seemed to leave quickly and the last few sips did fall a tad bit flat.

D –Very nice. This was light enough to be a consistent drinker without going overboard and boarding on too light. But the flavors were very well pronounced and defiantly left you with a good overall impression. This was defiantly a sessionable ale here and something I would not mind seeing in the fridge for a while.

Overall I was quite impressed with this little dark wheat beer that I had never heard of before today. It definitely held its own with anything I had in the category prior. I will be looking for this more often as it was a pleasant surprise and went very well with a roast chicken dinner. My tastes seem to be leaning more and more towards the german lagers, and not that this is a bad thing because it is opening me up to a whole new world of flavors.

The Waitrose "Bavarian Dunkel Weissbier" version...

Appearance: ruddy brown, very cloudy, huge pillow of fine-beaded spongey tan foam with great head retention, bits of lace

Aroma: wheaty essence with wafting hints of clove, a dusting of cinnamon, and just barely a sense of ripe bananas

Flavor: beer-bread maltiness with that wheaty-tang of weissbiers; tendrils of pumpkin pie spice and banana; a bit dusty; finishes dry with a powdery wheat flour aftertaste

Mouthfeel: medium body, zippy carbonation, fluffy

Other comments: Not too bad, if a bit bland in the flavor. The "Bavarian Weissbier" is much better.

Had this at the Old Chicago in Wilmington, NC
I'd never heard of the brewer, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
Claims to be "the count's brew" and made in Bavaria, but not much else. Also claims to be unfiltered, but after pouring it, I'd never know that. Not sure if there's a Kristal-Dunkel-Weiss...but this would be one.
Pours a light brown color, pretty normal for a dunkel-weisen. The strange thing, is that it was about 90% clear. It actually had a freshness date (which is great), so I don't know why it was so clear.
Smell was also pretty subdued. It had the traditional clove smell, but not much banana or chocolate.
Flavor in this beer was GREAT, though. Possibly one of the stronger tasting dunkel-weisens I've had. It surprised me after the light smell and seemingly filtered appearance. Banana and chocolate dominate, as the clove mainly showed up in the smell. I picked up some spicy flavors, too, kind of like a wit.
Mouthfeel was solid. and I'd definitely drink more. Hopefully the distribution on this beer will increase as it was unique.

Under the brand name of "Waitrose Bavarian Dark Wheat Beer--Hefe-Weiss Dunkel" ("Waitrose" is a British supermarket chain), I got to know where the beer is from according to the indirect clue on the beer label: "brewed near the town of Plattling in Bavaria in what was originally established as a castle brewery in 1567"... BBE OCT 2006.

A: pours into a full-size weiss-bier glass a cloudy, black-tea to chestnut brownish hue, coming with a 1.5cm-thick frothy beige beer head with very good retention; champagne-like carbonation.
S: sour-sweet wheatish maltiness, on top of banana-skin, clove and sour mango; not too different from the same brewery's hefe-weizen, but the sweetness of malts is more pronounced, with a touch of toffee. Overall quite pleasant but straight forward.
T: bready-textured wheatish maltiness with sourly-sweet banana flavouring which is very mild and thin-bodied; a touch of brown sugar and toffee is mixed well with the maltiness but the overall texture is pretty thin. Nice flat-textured malty overtone in the finish.
M&D: lively, refreshing, very smooth on the mouthfeel, but overly thin-bodied (for my taste) and in the end the body becomes quite watery to my surprise! Compared with the same brewery's hefeweizen, I think this one is beaten hands down. Of course it's under a different style, but the complexity and flavour profile are not comparable with the hefeweizen. Or maybe it's just because I'm not used to this style.

Pours a lighter shade of brown a tea-like color with a big rocky, fluffy head that leaves nice big gobs down my weisse glass, there is some smoke and clove in the aroma pretty darn yeasty and appetizing.Taste is dominated by spicey clove with a little smoke in there with a odd sourness in the finish wich got stronger as I drank more wich I didnt care for when real strong.I think a solid dunkel weisse except for the late sourness a very top notch brew and a good find, would by again I think.

Picked this one up in a bargain bin, with a "best before" date of May 2004, so it's a little old. Cloudy, dark brown hue with a nice off-white head that hangs around for a while. Deep yeasty aroma, with an undertone of roasted malt. Rather thin body holds a palate of lager yeast, wheat, and light fruit. Not particularly inspiring, but not a bad beer.
