@ Busy Bee

Cloudy pale yellow under a fluffy white head. Pale fruity, malt sweet aroma...bready yeast, honey, and soft noble hops. Nice pale malt base with a solid floral hoppiness on top. Sweet, somewhat peppery flavor and some honey and grape. Fresh and light, fairly crisp yet soft. Good, refreshingly clean lager.

Decent head at first pour and unfiltered look

Smell: Very light & mild hop aroma. Other than that there is not much to it.

Taste: Light bodied but clean and smooth. Slight and I mean a slight hop taste. A very faint citrus taste finish.

A decent beer but not my favorite.

Cloudy, pale-yellow colored beer with a smallish head and good lace. Fairly modest aromas, mostly of grass and yeast, with hints of sweet maltiness.

Taste is clean, yeasty, lightly nutty, and very grassy. Very low bitterness, mild sweetness.

Clean finish, good carbonation, crisp and refreshing. Nice but not super exciting. I’d still prefer a good hefeweizen over this. Definitely on the light side; an easy drinker.

On-tap 11/1/2011 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a large white head that fades very slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains light caramelized malts, lager yeast, some hops and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out with mildly sweet flavors of citrus and some spices. Then a thin breadiness comes in from a light malt character and lager yeast. There’s a good hops presence for the style creating a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and very crisp, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is very clean.

D: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, mild kick, very good representation of style, this is a nice lighter German-style beer with a lot of flavor and substance making it worth pounding down for a long time.

Almost perfect pour with big foamy 2 finger head just to the top of the SA Perfect pint glass, hazy creamy golden pils color with nice lacing.

Nose creamy malts, light soft decoction malt, light crisp lager, very little malt and no straw, hint of citrusy grassy like hop.

Taste is light, soft and fairly complex with some decoction taste, touch of straw like malt, creamy. Light crisp lager and hint of fruit, light grassy hop with a slight bitterness. Finishes crisp and clean, light grassy hop and soft malts.

Mouth is lighter bodied decent carb.

Overall nice, crisp and clean, soft creamy malts, hint of grassy hops, very drinkable.

Pours a hazy pale straw color with a small wispy white head that settled into a light ring.

The aroma is of doughy/bready munich malt. There is a bit of a metallic note. Some grassy noble hops round out the aroma. Typical German aroma.

The flavor is of a sweet bready malt. It has an almost honey sweetness though none was added. There is a nice grassy hop flavor that goes perfectly with this brew. Simple flavors but everything works.

As per the style, the body is quite substantial. This is offset by a very fizzy carbonation, which is a bit too strong. The beer is sweet on the palate but is offset by the grassy hops. This drinks very well.

Not light in body but simple in flavor. It is quite a refreshing beer. Enjoyable.

A-cloudy pale yellow. not transparent. with a nice stable white head. some lacing

S-fresh grassy grains. good strength

T-comes in with a high quality taste of pale German grains that have a slight sweetness to them. it has a great after-taste of grassy grains. its an extremely smooth and simple taste.

M-good creamy medium carbonation with a dry finish

O-was at a new bar in a new area that had dozens of exciting beers. I only had the time to get one beer and I chose this due to my ongoing curiosity of the style, I was sure glad I did. This is an extremely drinkable beer and a joy to have. I'll be searching this one out!

Cloudy yellow golden color that starts off with a white two finger head. The head calms down to an average lace around the glass but, with just a swirl of the glass it can be agitated back to at least a one finger head.

Smell at first is grassy from the hops. Mellow sweetness kicks in because, but there is a balance. Lemon, wheat, and hints of yeast.

The aroma tends to emulate the flavor. Lemon and grassy hops matched with wheat and barely. Makes a perfect balance! Not to forget there is a hint of yeast from being unfiltered.

Light bodied with plenty of carbonation. Just very easy to drink even with a heavy meal.

Over all this German lager has every thing a beer geek would want from this style. A great balance of hops and barely and light body. Besides the price.... this is up there with the top German Lagers.

Bottle purchased at The Wine Thief, New Haven, CT.

Pours a light gold with orange highlights. Head is thick, creamy and almost white. Beer is somewhat cloudy, but from what I understand that's expected for the style.

Smells a lot like some of the best Czech Pilsners that I've had. Rich aroma of earthy noble hops, cut with a bit of fresh grain.

Taste starts out with more of that noble hop earthiness. But it expands into something like fresh bread, possibly even a touch of fruit (lemon?) towards the back. An almost creamy, but not sweet, texture to it. Subtle, though.

This beer is crisp and refreshing, the sort of thing I'd be happy to drink if we ever get warm weather again. Yet, there's a real depth to it. Again, it's most similar to an unfiltered Pilsner, a style of which I've only had a few, and I'm not sure I could say categorically what makes this beer different from them. But what I can say is I will happily seek out this or other Zwickl beers in the future, and I hope American breweries start making some!

330 ml brown bottle. Best before 4/11/2012.

It is a fine looking brew. It pours a hazy light gold with a fizzy white head. The only knock is that there isn't much lacing.

This is a decently old bottle for the style but it smells fresh still, must have been kept okay in the past. It is light but malty with a hint of light fruit and a bit of herbal hop.

The flavor is real nice. Really bright beer here. Some yeast prescence, more so then if you got it fresh on tap near the brewery, but it isn't detracting much from the beer. It has a nice herbal bitter note in the finish and is mostly flavorful but subtle pale malts with a subtle fruitiness.

Drink these before they go old, that is all.

On Tap at brahaus Schmitz in Philly, the first bar in the area to tap this beauty. Served in proper glass.

Arcobräu Zwickl Lager pours a very pretty hazy golden color with some blond hints here and there. Nice fluffy white head, sparse lace. Smell is my favorite part of the brew, it smells great with herbal hop scent, some grain with a nice spicy yeast in the back. Some faint fruitiness and just great scents. Taste does not deliver based on the nose but this is great delicious beer. European herbal hoppings with some grain, apple skin, faint nuts, and bready yeast backing, once again delish. Feel is a light bodied lager with some nice bubble activity and a crispness on the tounge. This is great beer and a growler on a Sunday would be an easy task.

Served on tap at the Little Pub in ridgefield, CT. Served in signature zwicki glass.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow. Opaque. Thick creamy white foam that persists at the top of the glass.

Not much nose. Taste is a relatively clean, yet flavorful and creamily smooth lager long finish. Some hop is noticed. But prevailing lighter flavor.

Interesting style creates a very easy drinking lager. Nice taste.

Light, hazy gold with a solid inch of white head.

Noble hops, a tad spicey, a tad grassy, a touch earthy, some fruitiness.

Round and smooth. Bready malts, spicy, grassy hops. Soft bitterness. Quite drinkable.

A smidgen bigger than light-bodied. Very effervesant.

Dang, I could drink these all damn day in the summer.

Pours pale yellow with a foamy white head. No lace, some slight retention. Tons of bubbles.

Grassy sweetness and some bread notes for aroma.

Clean brew. Grassy malt flavors, but not sweet. Some crisp and light bitter notes. Dry bready flavors. Beer dries out fast. with a clean bitter finish.

Lighter bodied, but over- carbonated. I liked this, but way too fizzy. A clean crisp beer and worth a try for sure.

Here's a style not seen often around here.

Pours a cloudy whitish-blond color with a two-finger head into my glass. Resembles a witbier more than anything.

Sweet with a decent hint of citrus in the nose. Very much like a lager.

Crisp, chewy and sweet malt greet the tongue. Think of an unfiltered pilsener.

The sweet malt lingers at the back of the throat, followed by a sour citrus finish.

Being that this style isn't very pronounced in the U.S, I'm impressed with this example.

11.2 oz brown glass pry-top bottle. Back label dated best before 2012.05.02

Pours a hazy pale orange with some bright white head. Cloudy but not murky. Nose is faint with some flowery notes and a little orange. Palate is crisp and juicy at the same time. Orange blossoms come to mind. Great, full mouthfeel for a layer. Really enjoyable!

Anoter Keller bier, fun. Beer served in a snifter. Beer is yellow and hazy with nearly no head, no lacing, low carbonation.

Aroma is mildly bitter with a decent pilsen aroma to the whole thing, interesting.

Beer is light in body and wet on the palate, highly drinkable but light on flavor. I find it watery a little and wanting something on the finish. There is a mild earthy bitterness but it is too little too late. I might have it again but it would be more enjoyable if it had more flavor or body.

A - very cloudy golden wheat looking body. decent head whens erved, fading to a thin layer.

S - Sweet wheat and grains with a kick of hops. Sweet honey floating through to tempt the nose.

T - Sweet wheaty-grain base with some hop dryness. Honey-like sweetnes throughout and a hint of citrus zest. A tad bitter on the back end.

M - This beer is light, clean, and thirst quenching.

O - A nice summer beer or session beer in my opinion. A bit on the lighter side all around but a good pick.

Poured on tap at Churchkey DC into a 14oz. Pokal glass.

Very light lemon hued, with light amber brown middle body. A very white one finger head is produced that slowly falls with a creamy character. Real nice lacing also, very sexy looking.

Bouquet is a nice light malt, but also a strong doughy airy bread. Slight sense of muted crispness.

A very soft mild palate and finish. Slight crisp, is and super chewy soft doughy malt with lots of density. Almost like drinking raw wet dough.

Overall though pretty tasty and a dense dough blast that comes off as refreshing.

On tap at Churchkey. Served in a snifter.

Pours a slightly-hazy light golden color with a good white head and some mild lacing. The nose brings a bit of very light hops, but mostly grainy malt. Too much grain, actually. The flavor is mostly raw grain and base malt without too much else going on. Light body and crisp carbonation. Decent enough, but not something I'd come back for.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #48 (Jan 2011):

While definitely not a common style to be imported into the US, it's one that is admired by both consum- ers and brewers alike. Slightly yeast-hazed golden hue; the draping of white lace on the glass is an amaz- ing sight. Faint peppery notes, with grape skin, fresh-cut grass and bready nose. Refreshing with its snappy crispness, smoothness ensues in the back of the lighter body. Fresh dry grain and light, nutty yeast meld quite well together. Hops hone in for balance and give off a light herbal freshness. Finishes very dry with a clean grain-and-yeast aftertaste.
