Notes/Commercial Description:
Big Wave is light golden ale with a subtle fruitiness and delicate hop aroma. A smooth, easy drinking refreshing ale. The lightly roasted honey malt contributes to the golden hue of this beer and also gives a slight sweetness that is balanced out by our special blend of hops.

Kona Big Wave Golden Ale has a fairly thick, rocky, off-white head, a clear, golden appearance, lots of streaming bubbles (etched glass), some lacing, and little white specks floating throughout. The aroma is of fruit (think pineapple), faint bread, and mild sweetness. Taste is all of those, with a strong tap water note. Bitterness is mellow and pleasant, but ho-hum, to an extent. Mouthfeel is between light and medium, and Kona Big Wave Golden Ale finishes dry, crisp, refreshing, lager-like, and drinkable. Overall, this is alright, and I suppose it’s worth checking out.

Half finger head but nice lacing on a clear golden body. Aroma of wheat, grains, tropical fruit with a slight floral note. Flavor also has a nice balance of tropical fruit and wheat/grains with bready notes. The fruit lingers nicely without being too sweet. light to medium body and moderate to high carbonation. Lease a bit of a sandy feel on the palate in the aftertaste. Nice drinkable beer. More complex than I expected. A nice one to try.

I poured a finger of white head over a bubbly wheat-yellow body. The head disappears in a minute or so, leaving nothing up top.

Smells grainy.

Grain with grass is what I'm getting on my tongue. Tastes pretty clean.

The mouthfeel is light/medium bodied. Goes down easy.

12 oz. bottle, with a date on the label August 13, 2013. Another year round offering from Kona Brewing, acquired this bottle as part of a mixed six pack from the local beer store.

Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.

A - Pours a finger and a half of fluffy white foam. Body is a light lemon-orange color with just a bit of sediment floating around. Looks good for what it is.

S - Smell is of light crackery biscuit malts, honeyed graham cracker, some lemon zest, and piney hops. Not a strong aroma, but well enough for what it is.

T - Taste is of crisp bready malts, with just the right amount of lemon / pine hop zest to it. Maybe just a touch of caramel malt, and a touch of honey sweetness from the honey malts. Very nicely balanced.

M - Feel is crisp, light, and refreshing. Mild hop stickiness / bitterness on the palate.

Overall, an excellent, refreshing, light, and delicious beer from Kona Brewing. This is probably one my favorite beers from these guys yet. This beer would definitely make a great summer sipper to pair with some BBQ.

Golden/light amber, small foamy head, not so sticky lacing.
Fruity malts in the smell, with peach and tropical notes. Floral hint and biscuits too.
Malts are very weak, giving way too a nice fruitiness, with tangerines, pineapple, watermelon, lime zest and peaches (not too strong tho). Grassy and floral notes. Hops are mostly aromatic, packing a very (less than) mild bitterness.
Feels a bit watery, very easy to gulp down.
Nice fruity beer, but feels way too faded. Refreshing, but lacking.

Clear golden ale as advertised with a small white head that doesn't hang around.

Smell is a surprise, this is seriously hopped and smells strongly of hops the moment you pop the top off. Strong tropical hop aromas it smells strongly of pineapple and passion fruit. Pine and citrus are present. Malt is light soda crackers.

Starts out neutral malt and slightly sweet without a big bitterness hit. Wheat biscuit malt flavor with a subtle tropical hop flavor. High mineral water slightly sweet with a mild passion fruit flavor.

Mouthfeel is light pretty much what you want in a beer of this type.

Overall an interesting beer with a shockingly good aroma. P{pretty much this is a thirst quenching beer made to be pleasant but not win any awards. I can see drinking this again.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance – Pours a lighter golden color with a two finger white head. The head has a decent retention but eventually fades to give a nice amount of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is light overall with some bready and malty notes as well as a lighter citrus hop aroma. Mixed with these aromas is a lighter floral hop aroma as well.

Taste – The taste begins with a lighter biscuit and wheat flavor. Some citrus hop then comes to the tongue. It is slightly sweeter and mainly of an orange flavor with some hints of lemon. These flavors take the taste to the end where they combined with some light floral and herbal hop flavors.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer s very light with a carbonation level that is on the average to above average side. Both are quite good for making a very crisp and drinkable beer.

Overall – Rather refreshing and easy drinking. While it is not huge on the flavor profile, it does make for a decent session style brew.

A good summer beer. Almost a suspicion of citrus. Reminds me of freshly mowed grass during a rain. I can't really find anything bad to say other than I might get tired of this fairly quickly; but I will definitely keep some of this on hand for the summer months for a nice change of pace

Had this at a bar in Lahaina walking around doing tourist stuff.

Poured a very light golden color. Moderate fizz.

Aromas of....carbon dioxide, slight malt.

Very light body, clean aftertaste from the carbonation. Malts are subdued but heavier than I expected for a Gold. Balanced with hops fairly well, slight lingering bitterness. Mild hop aroma that I can't make out over the malt. Very smooth and clean.

Good for a hot day. If you are in Hawaii and just want a local brew go for the Fire Rock Pale Ale first.

I had this a few times on Maui in lieu of the lager and found it a simple refreshing ale that hits the spot when it is warm or you are getting the grill going on the Lanai. The hops are there but this not the focus of this beer. I got bored after a couple in that I wanted more complexity but still worth drinking.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours golden with a medium white head, solid lace.

S: Biscuity grain, some English peas, and white grapes.

T: Nice pils malt style flavour, some grassy hops, golden raisins and some citrus.

M: Light-bodied, crisp, creamy, frothy.

O: A solid blonde ale, good flavour, refreshing. Pretty inexpensive so worth a try.

Pours a clear, golden color with an off-white head. Decent, in fact, pretty good head retention. Some scattered lacing is left behind.
Smell is a little malt, wheat, hops and citrus blended well together. It gets better as it warms, though.
Taste is pretty much the same. Notes of malt, citrus & evergreen from the hops, slight caramel. Again, the flavor gets better as it warms. In fact, I would suggest waiting 10-15 minutes before starting.
Medium body, carbonation is tart at the start but fades fairly quickly. It's a pretty innocuous beer, a good step in the correct direction away from mega-lagers. Nothing special but at least some flavor and a more restrained hop profile.

dated aug of 12. consumed oct. of 12.

A: Pale orange with a bright clarity and only a whisper of effervesce. The head was slight, creamy with a light tan coloring displaying a short to moderate retention rate. Minimal splashes of lacing on the vessel.

S: Sweet tropical fruitiness, a mixture of oranges, fresh pineapple and mangos. Sweet and perfuny delivery.

T: Flavor of tropical fruitiness of oranges and pineapples, mangos. Sugary grain sweetness, smooth tropical golden ale. Touches of fruity spice hoppiness and fresh greenery is gentle and complimentary to the fruit based nature.

M: Creamy buttery texture in the mouthful. No carbonation felt, light and refreshing.

O: Overall a beach/poolside refreshment. Tropical hints well suited per locale environment, easy going, well balanced and makes for a easy tropical refresher on a hot hawian summer.

not a bad golden ale, if a bit bland and generic, its plenty easy drinking. pours perfectly clear golden in color with gently rising bubbles and an inch of white foam that is gone in a few minutes but can be riled back up consistently. the nose is peachy, not sure if its intentional or an off essence, but I personally like it, pale malt profile and a bready ale yeast. the flavor hints of some mild hops up front, but its washed out quick by a big wave (pun intended) of neutral malt flavors that are just on the verge of sweet. finish isn't as clean as the longboard lager, but still pretty quick. not too exciting, but certainly not offensive at all. my dad would love this as a Molson drinker. carbonation is a little light for the style, and the body is super light. its an all day beer with the super low abv and general pleasantness. not something ill seek out again, but a beer that id be more than happy to quaff on the Hawaiian shores.

I picked up a bottle of Kona Brewing Company's Big Wave Golden Ale a couple days ago at the Lager mill. It's been a long time since I've had a beer from Kona and since they just entered our market I thought I would take a chance on this one, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date, but I think it's fairly fresh. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks nice, I think it goes well with the name and it's a little eye catching. It poured a slightly hazy bright yellow color that took on a golden hue when held to the light with a fingers worth of bubbly white head that faded to a thin ring fairly quickly and it left some spotty lacing behind. This was a nice looking beer, I really liked the color, but I thought the head and head retention were lacking.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness followed by the malts being the first to show up and they impart a sweet malt, lightly grain, light bready and crystal malt like aromas. Up next comes the hops which impart a nice citrus hop aroma with a slight tropical fruit aroma showing up in the background. The aroma was pretty nice, I wasn't expecting such a nice bright fruity hop aspect.

T- The taste seems to be somewhat similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness that's followed by the malts still being the first to show up and they impart those same malty aspects that they did in the aroma with the bready and grainy hops being the first to show up. Up next comes the hops which are much lighter than they were in the aroma and they impart a very light citrus hop flavor with an equally light floral hop flavor. On the finish there's hardly any bitterness with a grainy, bready and sweet malt like aftertaste. This was a nice tasting beer, but I wish the taste was more like the aroma.

M- Smooth, clean, a little crisp, on the thicker side of being light bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. the mouthfeel was nice and it worked well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was decent beer and a solid example of a Blonde/Golden Ale, it had most of the aspects that I would expect from the style, it had a pretty bright aroma, but I found myself wishing it tasted more like it smelled. This beer had nice drinkability, it was smooth, clean, a little crisp, not filling and the taste did a decent job at holding my attention, I could see myself drinking a couple of these when it's warm out, but I think after two I would start to get bored with it. What I like the most about this beer was the aroma, it was pretty nice and I thought it was the highlight of this beer. What I liked the least about this beer was that taste, it came off a little bland and I wish it was a little more like the aroma. I might buy this beer if I want an easy drinking beer, but I don't think it's something that I need to keep in the fridge and I think it's worth trying at least once, but I doubt it will be an instant favorite. I think it's a nice beer to enjoy in warm weather. All in all I thought this was a fairly solid beer, it wasn't the most memorable, but for a Golden Ale I thought the aroma was pretty memorable and it had a pretty even amount of pros and cons. So far this is my favorite beer from Kona, but it isn't a favorite of the style. Nice job guys, this was a nice easy drinking beer, keep up the solid work.

Pours a clear, golden color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Great retention and decent lacing. Smells of citrus hops, hint of pine, sweet malt, hint of pale malt, and floral notes. Fits the style of an American Blonde Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of floral hops, hint of citrus hops, sweet malt, slight sugar, hint of pale malt. Overall, good appearance, decent aroma, body, and blend.

Kona Big Wave

Ontap, a hazed straw yellow with a soapy white froth and little in the way of lace. Aroma of yeast, citrus and a faint flowery hop. Well balanced brew with notes of lemon, hay, grains and a little earthy hop presence. Fairly refreshing and very easy to drink. Overall I could definately drink a few of these.

Appearance - Pours a clear, brilliant golden yellow with a white, finger width head. Decent retention, the resulting lace is thin but consistent, and displays good stick.

Smell - Citrus notes are most prevalent; lemon and a touch of orange. Pineapple. Faint bready malts play off in the background.

Taste - What's presented on the nose is reversed on the tongue. Mostly big malt notes upfront, grain and honeyed bread. Hops come in a little firmer on the back end, with citrus and a touch of grass. The finish is quick, with a touch of lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Very light in body with fizzy carbonation; seltzer water-like quality.

Overall - Fantastic smell, decent flavor, but a poor body... still, if they made this the summer release over the Wailua Wheat, I wouldn't shed a tear.

I picked this up at Gian Beer Garden and Eatery, enjoyed chilled in a mug.

The color is golden w/ gentle haze and thick white cap which recedes to a small ring. The smell is malty with light sweet scent and mild fruit ester from the yeast. The feel is decent with mild sweetness and moderate carbonation level with gentle bitterness and clean overall feel with semi--dry finish.

The taste is good with some malt flavor which is toasted with some light sweetness and gentle yeast accents with a semi-creamy taste and mild hop in the background. Overall this is a pretty gentle flavored beer with some fresh tasting malt but not a very complex affair, just a pretty well brewed blonde which is easy to drink

This is another beer I have loved, hated, liked and now think is just pretty good. Definitely a light summer type of beer. The flavor is pretty solid for such a light beer but I would suggest passing if you are not planning on being at the beach or at a BBQ in the sun and you like a little flavor to your beer. The taste to me seems like a lager with some fruitiness to it. Color is a light gold, not much of a head to it. Smell is light and fruity. If I am drinking this beer I am happy because I am on a beach in the sun :)

Pours a crystal dark golden color with a one finger white head that recedes quickly. Below average lacing.
Smell very clean, mainly grainy malts and light.
Taste follows nose with a grain/bread malty start and crisp clean finish. This has a honey like sweetness towards the end. Light herbal hop bitterness follows.
Clean and dry finish. Low body and medium carbonation.
Good solid and drinkable golden ale. It lacks the fruityness of the top fermenting yeast and to me it tastes like a clean malty lager.

12oz bottle from the Kona Brewing variety pack - served in an Imperial nonic glass
Dated 19-FEB-13

A: Pours a golden straw body with magnificent clarity. Effervescent with micro bubbles that form a thick finger of sudsy white stuff. Decent hang time and some rungs of dripping lace decorate the glass.

S: Smells piney with some grapefruit zest and tangerines. I am getting a light yeast spice and a bit of tropical mangoes. No real malt sweetness coming through. Delicate aromas yet relatively fresh with American hops. Surprisingly nice.

T: Taste is very light, fruity, and tropical with a firm grassy hay note. I get some tangerine citrus, mango, and pines with a moderate amount of bitterness on the palate. There is a light sourdough bread malt base that is not really sweet at all. Alcohol not even mentionable. This almost drinks like a West Coast APA/IPA. Really not bad at all especially on a hot summer day.

M: Clean light and crisp with a nice drying quality. Finish is slightly wetter but very light and dry overall.

D: At just 4.4% this is a really nice session beer. Much hoppier than I was anticipating. It drinks more like a hoppy Pale Ale. Light crisp and refreshing warm weather brew. Not your typical Blonde and I would say my favorite of the pack.
