Swimming in a fresh water pool at the base of a cascading waterfall is what we all imagine we would find in paradise. On Maui, follow the old Hana Highway and you will find such a place – Wailua Falls. This plunging cascade of clear water is the inspiration for our Limited Release Wailua Wheat Ale. This golden, sun colored ale has a bright, citrus flavor that comes from the tropical passion fruit we brew into each batch. Sit back, relax and enjoy paradise anytime.

Me and my wife shared a few bottles of this last night and I gotta tell ya I was pleasantly suprised.Poured a hazed kinda peachy color with a tight but thinner white head atop, toasted wheat malt mainly in the nose, the passion fruit is faint but noticeable.Flavors are a mix of toasted wheat malt and passion fruit, the passion fruit shines through more on the palate making for a refreshinging brew. Its not complex but as refreshing as all get out,in the summer here in NC I would have no problem drinkin this.

Beer review from BA Mag Aug 2007.

Wailua is a community on the east side of Kauai at Nounou Mountain (aka the "Sleeping Giant"). This offering is labeled as a "wheat ale brewed with passion fruit."

Obviously filtered, it pours a clear and bright golden color with a thin pure-white head. Light tropical fruit aroma, fresh wheat and powdery malts in the nose. Light on the palate, creamy and coarse with a wheat edge, followed by soft tropical passion fruit flavor. Recalls the juice in a fruit cup as it warms. Faint citrus snap and crispness. Moderate sweetness; low hopping. A slight herbal note and a touch of mint in the background. Dry, husky tannins. Gritty finish.

Interesting choice of fruit, though we wish it finished a bit cleaner. Fairly pedestrian, but that's probably the point. Kona's website suggests pairing this beer with lighter fare: grilled fish and shrimp, roasted chicken, salads and Asian foods. They even suggest vanilla ice cream. Hmm ... pairing this beer sounds more fun than drinking it on its own!

12oz bottle picked up in St. Louis. Pours into my glass a light slightly hazed yellow. A small crystalline white head forms but fades into nothing just as quickly. Aromas begin with light wheat grain that is lightly toasted. A quite mellow passion fruit aroma lurks in the background that I wish was more prominent. A touch spicy as well.

First sip brings a pale grain malt with a touch of wheat creaminess. It goes down with a hint of spice and mellow passion fruit flavor. A touch of bitterness on the way down. I really wish the passion fruit was more evident and the base beer amped up a bit. This just doesn't do it for me at all.

Mouthfeel is rather light with a steady flow of bubbles. Goes down easy enough and I could easily drink a few. The only problem is that this brew simply bores me nearly to tears. Another run of the mill pale wheat brew. I was interested when I saw passion fruit, but the flavor just isn't there and isn't enough to make me want to come back. Can't say I would recommend this one, it's not worth the time.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz, long neck bottle into a pint glass. The bottle has a "bottled on date" of 060409 notched into the label.

Appearance: The body has good clarity and a nice golden color. It builds up a tall white head full of big loosely packed bubbles that quickly fade out. This only makes for a very little spotty lacing.

Smell: The aroma is pleasant and has a little bit of sweet fruity mango and papaya like notes with a light grainy base.

Taste/Palate: Its flavor is very close to what you would expect from its aroma. It is sweet overall and has a pleasant hint of tropical fruitiness. The finish is sweet as well and there is no balance from hops. It's not overly sweet in my opinion but there is very little hop flavor at all.

Notes: My overall feeling is that it is easy to drink, somewhat interesting and would have to say that I like this beer. I think this would be a great beer for non-beer drinkers or just people who don't like bitter beers.

Bought a sixer of this at a local grocery, hoping for a decent fruity wheat summer quencher. It pours a mostly clear, chill hazed golden yellow body with an average white head that quickly falls away. Minor patchy lacing is left on the glass.

Aroma has some hints of passion fruit, perhaps, but mostly a vague bready fruitiness and a pale wheat malt twang.

Body is light medium with a sparkly carbonation.

Taste has a pale wheat twang that I don't care for. Slightly bready but the carbonation helps drinkability. No tropical fruitiness in the taste, just a hint of vague fruitiness.

Not horrid, but I would pick up a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat before I try this one again.

12 ounce bottle, with bottled on dating on the lower front label. Pours washed out hazy light golden amber, loose short lived near white head, that leaves just a smidge of spotty lace. Sweet super charged fruity nose leads to an equally fruity summer brew. Notes of sweet tropical fruit, with a mild mouth coating element of moderatly drying hops. Bring on summer, head for the tropics and enjoy a few bottles of this fruity warm weather brew

Appearance: bright yellow in color, small head, clear, small carbonation

Smell: wheat, passion fruit, and florals..almost too sweet a smell

Taste: wheat honey, sweet fruit, and flowers. The taste is not as sweet as the smell.

Mouthfeel: smooth, semi-sweet, low carbonation, light body

Drinkability: I am glad I got this and am equally glad I got just one. It was like drinking a tropical flower garden. The fruit does not mix as well with the light beer. The taste is a bit too sweet and there is no need to rush and get a second one.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

A: Light golden color. One finger of head. No lacing

S: Tropical fruit mainly, a small amount of banana and wheat.

T: The first taste is malt, wheat, followed by the taste of fruit and a small amount of sweetness, finishing with some faint hops. Alcohol is well masked

M: An appropriate amount of carbonation for the style. Medium-light body.

Overall: As far as "fruit" beers go, this one gets it about right. The fruit is present, but without tasting like a "flavored malt beverage"; it mainly adds some depth to the taste of a pale wheat beer. A good summer brew.

Got this beer from my brother-in-law in San Deigo on a recent visit.12oz brown long neck bottle with a crimped cap bottled on 6/15/07and served into a wheat glass.

Clear with a slight haze a golden straw color with barely a 1'' white head that dissapated quickly leaving a couple of short lace strips.
Active looking throughout lots of tiny bubbles tight knitted string together racing to the surface.

Doughy aromas with lots of fruit very tropical-like,passion fruit? not sure what it smells like, aroma reminsent of apricot/mango/melon. No traditional wheat aromas present.

Very fruity taste, not overpowering, lots of tang, fruit tastes tropical punch like, but not on the syrupy side, like a lot of fruit beers. Finishes crisp with a citrus twang and a bit of an astrigent note.

Light bodied, refreshing, goes down easily,a good refreshing summer beer. Not offensive like a lot of flavored beers.

Had this on a recent return trip to Kauai...Poured a light amber color. As mentioned before, two-finger head that dissipated fairly quickly. The smell was mostly passion-fruit. The taste was more of the same. There was not much of the "wheat ale" in the flavor (which I have to admit, I am not much of an American wheat fan). The mouthfeel was average, not too long lasting, but where this beer was above average was the drinkability. On our trip, we did daily hikes of several miles, and when stopping for lunch, this beer really hit the spot in 85 degree, full sun days. To me, the mild passion-fruit taste was something that was refreshing after a hot day in the sun. More enjoyable than I anticipated.
