Notes/Commercial Description:
Swimming in a fresh water pool at the base of a cascading waterfall is what we all imagine we would find in paradise. On Maui, follow the old Hana Highway and you will find such a place – Wailua Falls. This plunging cascade of clear water is the inspiration for our Limited Release Wailua Wheat Ale. This golden, sun colored ale has a bright, citrus flavor that comes from the tropical passion fruit we brew into each batch. Sit back, relax and enjoy paradise anytime.

bottle to pint.

A: a clear pale yellow, no head.

S: almost no smell at all, hints of wheat, and passion fruit.

T: not a whole lot there either, a bit of wheat, grain, then the passion fruit finish.

M: Light, with a strange semi-sweet passion fruit finish that lingers and lingers.

O: Not very good. Still finished it however. Like their pale and porter, and the lager is serviceable, but will never drink this again(unless I have no other choice).

Bottle poured into pint glass. Bottle 6/16/11. A bottled on date. What a strange concept?

A- Pale yellow. Minimal head.

S- An interesting fruity smell from the passion fruit. If I didn't know what went into it, I'm not sure that I could have put my finger on it.

T- Flavorful for an APWA. The passion fruit, again, comes to the forefront with the wheat coming through in the background.

M- Light and easy drinking, as expected.

O- I really like this for the style. Many APWAs are lacking in flavor, and this isn't. Granted, that is due seemingly solely to the addition of the passion fruit, but it does add a nice different dimension. This isn't the worlds best wheat ale, but is it pretty tasty and easy drinking. Nice for a summer outing.

A light crisp, fruit flavored beer that is great for the summer. The flavor is unique in that it is passion fruit, unlike the more typical citrus or berry flavored beers. Combine that with the fact that it is a wheat beer and it has some good body to despite being fruity. Delicious and satisfying.

The reason I tried this beer for the first time was because the other day I was working in a hot attic sweating my ass off for hours and I needed I light refreshing beer. This was exactly what I needed although to give a more fair rating, I'm reviewing it a few days later.

Pours a translucent bright gold color with a nice solid 1 finger frothy white head. No lacing. Noticeable carbonation.

Sweet/sour passion fruit immediately on the nose. Maybe a little plum as well. As you continue to drink the beer down, the beer very much smells like a gewürztraminer wine.

Sweet and slightly sour flavor up front coming from the passion fruit. Straw and wheat on the back end. Very pleasant fruity and wheaty aftertaste.

Very light and crisp mouthfeel with good carbonation.

Overall it's a great beer fro the mood. Perfect for a hot sweaty summer day. Good balance and a sourness that can draw towards the current sour trend. I recommend this beer for the right time previously noted.

Pours a slightly hazy dark golden yellow with a half finger white head that immediately fades into a very thin ring. Not much in the way of lacing.

Slightly earthy aroma with some zesty spice, floral hops, bread and citrus fruit. Hints of pine, pepper and coriander along with hints of lemon and orange peel. I'm not very familiar with passion fruit but there is a somewhat prominent citrus character. All of these characteristics are kind of bland however and the nose isn't too interesting.

Medium bodied with a balanced of earthy hops, zesty spice, bready yeast and sweet citrus. The hop presence adds a slight dryness and earthy character. This is followed by a strong spice presence that overpowers the other notes. The bready yeast adds to the palate but the spice and passion fruit add an odd, unpleasant metallic flavor that lingers after the finish.

Pours a hazy apple-juice-golden yellow color with a fizzy-looking yet persistent off-white head. The use of passion fruit is obvious in the aroma, although there is also a not entirely pleasant dull mossyness and a bit of a metallic character present. The flavor is a light, earthy combination of wheat and yeast, and the tropical fruitiness from the aroma is more muted, being replaced by more of a lemony citrus character. The texture is light without being thin, but the fine, prickly carbonation gets in the way of the light, subtle flavors. Overall, this beer is light and a bit fruity, and although the use of passion fruit is a bit of a novelty, it is otherwise fine and drinkable albeit uneven.

[Best served in a Weizen or Flute glass]

Poured a cloudy pale yellow with a small white fizzy head that was fully diminishing and had poor lacing. The aroma was super light of grain malts, a light moldy yeast with just a hint of citrus and passion fruit. It tasted light and sweet with a mild wheat note in the beginning and finished about the same with a mild taste of passion fruit at the end. Mouthfeel was light in body and watery in texture with an extremely soft carbonation. Overall almost like drinking flavored bottled water. Good thing it’s a Limited Release.

Appearance: Pours a nice golden color, but has very little head that disappears quickly. Perhaps I poured it improperly...

Smell: Pretty subtle smell, mostly pale wheat with a very light citrus tone lingering.

Taste: The taste is initially underwhelming... its got a crapton of carbonation that feels like you're drinking a extra dry champagne. However, when "sipped" it lends to a superbly crafted blend of passion fruit and apricot that lingers a bit on the tongue before giving way to a bit of alcohol and ends with a very dry feel.

Mouthfeel: is mostly dry, thin, bubbly.

Overall: a well crafted beer that lends itself to under-appreciation due to the carbonation levels. If one does not take the time to really slowly sip the flavors, its easy to miss how greatly crafted they are and mistake this with a bottle of Perrier.

Poured on-tap and served in a pint glass, the beer is a pale gold color with a shit-ton of carbonation. It has a good, dense, foamy white head. The beer smells like fruit cake, with sugary and cinnamon highlights. Flavors are apricot and peach sweet, with a slight nutmeg and cinnamon spicing. Bready aftertaste, with a sweet and cloying finish.

This may be more aptly classified as a fruit beer, rather than its current designation of APWA.

A - Golden, brassy and radiant, it is capped with next to no head or lace. Only the richness of hue puts it above average.

S - The nose is mostly pale grain with some floral hoppiness and a polite dosage of passion fruit. The exotic fruit is aromatically subtle, and suggests nearly as much peach and apricot as passion fruit.

T - The taste is not so restrained with the passion fruit flavor; it is, in fact, fully loaded with it. Joining that flavor, in an island fruit melange, we have apricot, guava, canteloupe and papaya notes. Pale wheat and grain is there too, and perhaps some vaguely floral hop; however, these elements are merely the platform for the fruit.

M - Lighter-bodied and refreshing.

O - I am a huge fan of this; I got it just for the tick, but am really taken aback by how well it is composed.

Poured into a hefe glass. Color was a light straw, with a white head. Head didn't stay at all, but was constantly replenished by numerous streams of carbonation from the bottom. Aroma was wheaty with a hint of fruity undertones, perhaps a touch of berry. Taste was watered down wheat with a slight sweetness. Felt too thin in the mouth. Otherwise a very pleasant beer. Despite the lack of real outstanding flavor, is an outstanding summer beer, easily sessionable.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Look - pale straw color, clear, with very little off-white foam that dissipates quickly.

Smell - a tame wheat beer smell, with a slight twist of citrus.

Taste and Mouthfeel - wheat beer taste is a little stronger in the taste, and as the label suggests, it actually does have a refreshing passion fruit type of taste. A little musky in the finish. The texture is pretty well balanced.

Overall - a not a bad brew, but also not terribly intriguing. It's well-balanced overall.

12oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. Bottle on 4/25/11. Pours a clear, light golden straw color with one finger of light foam that quickly dissipates. Some carbonation is visible. Nose has a lot of bittersweet citrus notes along with grain aromas. Mouthfeel is appropriately light. Not enough carbonation but not heavy. Palate is quite sweet with a hint of grain and citrusy bitterness. Pretty refreshing and exotic. Not bad and a unique interpretation of the style but not good enough for me to really recommend.

Served in a glass.

A: White head dissipates quickly leaving very little lacing. No carbonation visible once settled. Color is clear gold.

S: Fruity/floral smell. Wheat malt. Smells decent enough.

T: Heavy wheat malt. Very little (hopsy) bitterness. The passionfruit adds a nice fruitiness. Has kind of a "light beer" quality to the taste and mouthfeel.

M: Light-bodied. Little bit of carbonation.

O: Decent for a "hefeweizen"-type beer. It is interesting in that it has a bit of a light beer quality to it. The passionfruit definitely is a unique touch. It brings something to the beer that I've not quite had before.
Although it's decent, I'd drink it again but I'm not sure I'd buy it again.

A: Pours a very pale and very clear golden color with about a 1/2 inch white head that dies quickly.

S: Has the smell of dank wheat with a bit of overripe tropical fruit in the background. I get some guava and a bit of something that smells like an apricot pit.

T: Very light on the palette with some definitely wheat flavor and some hints of lemon and lime. Carbonation is lacking and the finish never really comes. It seems like there's a continuation of the middle flavors of the beer, which hint at tropical fruits, but no real finish. It's still a very drinkable beer, but not a great wheat beer.

Pours golden color into my pint glass. I can smell faint fruit, maybe some pineapple but when I take a sip I get overwhelmed by fruit. Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Mango. The fruits really give a whole another dimension to this beer. It doesn't last long on the palate. Just come and go. The sweetness of the fruit is what makes me come back for more, it gives the beer more complexity and if it weren't there then I'd just think this is another kona longboard, just simple without much taste.

Thanks to my man kk73 for another Hawaiian gem.

A- Pours a light golden with a little haze and small head. No lacing sticks around.

S- Big amounts of wheat and, well, malt liquor. A sickly sweet and breadiness all thrown into one. I don't pick up much of the passion fruits they describe.

T- Still pick up a lot of wheat, some grassiness and some light pineapple, and maybe a little bit of mango.

M- Medium to lighter bodied with weaker carbonation than I would have preferred.

O- I wish the passion fruit would have been more pronounced but I think I may have let this one sit a little too long. Doesn't really matter though, I love trying any beer Kalei sends to me from the Islands.

I can't decide what I think about this. Picked it up on a whim while shopping for... just beans (had a few ham bones in the fridge, you know how it goes). A little old lady called and talked to me about it at work, and I guess when I saw it on the shelf my curiosity got the best of me.

I was hoping for a poor-woman's Berlinerweisse, to be honest. And... well, it's just not that good. Whatever head you can manage to coax out quickly dissipates to a scummy blob, and the carbonation is, ugh, so coarse. The passion fruit comes through a lot more clearly than I expected, though, and do I like the tartness...

I don't exactly regret buying the 6-pack, and it will go down easy while I read by the pool tomorrow morning. But, yeah, I don't really recommend it, either.

I get excited when I see odd fruit beer. This was the first passion fruit beer I've ever seen. It pours a good bit clearer than I would expect. There is a golden look with some good lacing. The smell right when I opened it still in the bottle was awesome. The passion fruit aroma was fantastic, once I poured it into a glass it was not nearly as strong. The flavor however doesn't live up to the initial smell. There wasn't much going on taste wise. Over all it was bland.

12. oz. Brown Bottle--->Pint Glass.
Brewed in New Hampshire for Kona.

A: Pours a clear weak yellow with a thin
white head which does not last long at
all. The lacing is minimal also.

S: Crisp and very fruity. Passion Fruits.

T/M: This is a filtered brew so the wheat
flavor is subdued a bunch. Goes down
creamy with that passion fruit flavor. Not
much hops and other grains are faint.
The finish is fruity and still pretty clean.

O: Not the best wheat beer around. The
filtering is what hurts it. The drinkability
is still pretty good, and the use of fruits
is very interesting. Worth a try and
makes for a good summer beer.

Cheers!

Pours a hazy straw coloration with a half finger of thin white head. Poor retention with spotty lacing.

Smell is of wheat, cereal grains and grass quite thin. Passion fruit is there in substantial quantities but the aroma is quite earthy, bordering on dank. Some metallic finish too along with alot of the fruit acidity.

Flavors seem to be mismatched and unbalanced starts with a wheat twang and cereal grains and straw, not a strong back bone. Begins to feel like passion fruit and orange juice in the middle and finishes both tart and a tad dank, garden soil and lemon zest, odd, interesting not entirely unpleasant.

Average body for a wheat beer and the carbonation picks up as the drink goes on. Though the taste and aroma are a bit dark the finish and mouthfeel is both crisp and tangy.

In my opinion there are many other wheat beers that can deliver better crispness but the passion fruit here is unique. Good for a hot morning in the yard where grass clippings and fresh earth will mask the few eccentric odd flavors in this.

Pour from Bottle to Pint Class.

Just looking at it not much going on. Almost crystal clear and light straw color. The aroma was not bad but also not much going on either. When it hits your tongue you can instantly taste the tart/sour fruit flavor. I would not say that most would be able to tell its passion fruit if it was not written on the bottle. On the mouth it almost feels like a pilsner but its a wheat. Maybe it has a pilsner malt in the grain bill.

Overall not a bad beer but definitely average. On a hot summer day when I need a light easy drinking beer I might say its better than average. They can send me a ticket to Hawaii I'm sure it would taste better there.

12oz bottle served in a standard pint glass.

L - clear yellow with a white head that became a thin ring leaving some faint lacing.

S - the aroma is actually quite nice if you like the smell of tropical fruit and I do.

T - Tart fruity taste all the way through, the wheat is very subtle. It works for me.

F - light/medium bodied with a tart feel.

O - It's got a pretty unique taste and I thought it was a refreshing change.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Bottled on date of 3/3/11 stamped on front label. It was a slightly hazy golden color with good carb streams. It had a small, fizzy head that quickly dissipated into a barely there collar. Almost no lacing.

The aroma was a bad mix of grainy malt and passion fruit. Not good. The flavor was also an odd mix of very grainy malt and passion fruit. Maybe a different fruit would have worked better. None of the normal flavors that make a good wheat ale. Mouthfeel was light and watery. Needed more carb.

Overall, not good. The mix of malt and fruit just didn't do it for me. Nothing really here to grab onto and want to have again. Seasonal avail here in TX. Rotation - one and done.
