Notes/Commercial Description:
Swimming in a fresh water pool at the base of a cascading waterfall is what we all imagine we would find in paradise. On Maui, follow the old Hana Highway and you will find such a place – Wailua Falls. This plunging cascade of clear water is the inspiration for our Limited Release Wailua Wheat Ale. This golden, sun colored ale has a bright, citrus flavor that comes from the tropical passion fruit we brew into each batch. Sit back, relax and enjoy paradise anytime.

Had this on a hot night with wings and nachos. Poured a pale golden color with thin white head that lingered slightly and left okay lacing. Aroma was somewhat fruity, but not overwhelming, and I could still smell the wheat as well. Mouthfeel crisp and refreshing, and the flavor followed the fruity wheat of the nose. Thirst quenching finish of medium duration.

Not a bad summer cooler.

Me and my wife shared a few bottles of this last night and I gotta tell ya I was pleasantly suprised.Poured a hazed kinda peachy color with a tight but thinner white head atop, toasted wheat malt mainly in the nose, the passion fruit is faint but noticeable.Flavors are a mix of toasted wheat malt and passion fruit, the passion fruit shines through more on the palate making for a refreshinging brew. Its not complex but as refreshing as all get out,in the summer here in NC I would have no problem drinkin this.

From notes:

P: Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a pint glass. label depicts a Hawaiian waterfall with a swimmer in a blue pool at its base. Described as a "wheat ale brewed with passion fruit." Packaged on AUG0608. Limited Release. Cap includes a Hawaiian lesson; lilo=lost.

A: Pours with only about 1/4 inch of white head. This settles quickly, leaving just a ring around the glass. The beer itself is a golden honey color and slightly hazy. Some sediment in bottle.

S: Typical wheat twang with a pulpy and slightly bitter finish.

T: Very mild semi-sweet malt with a slight wheat twang provides the base for a citrusy fruit flavor. Slight bitter and pulpy flavor. Finishes crisp and dry.

M: Average carbonation level. Body is decent.

D: Very good. The wheat provides a great base for the fruit flavor. Big fan of my first Kona.

Pours a hazy pale straw color with a small tight white head that left a sparse cap and lacing. The aroma is of lemony wheat malt and the fruit punch like passion fruit. The taste has a noticable but not cloying passion fruit flavor which is carried throughout by the wheat malt. A standard American wheat brew with a Hawaiian twist. The feel is fairly light, dry, crisp carbonation. Not a huge fan of American wheat brews but the passion fruit is a nice spin. The passion fruit is subtle, which keeps this from being a fruit brew.

Thanks to Dansting. 12oz. bottle served in a shaker pint. Poured a slightly hazy pale gold with a finger of white head. Heavy passion fruit aroma with some wheaty tang. Light bodied with a lot of passion/pineapple fruit aroma. I don't think I would want to drink more than one of these.

Appearance: Yellow/gold, kind of pale, kind of cloudy, not really hazy like a wheat should be, but certainly isn't that clear. Head is there and gone soon..not impressive in that department.

Aroma: Strong of passion fruit. Its excessively fruity. Not much in areas of wheat, malts, whatever. Doesn't remotely resemble beer.

Taste: Ah, this is actually beer, not tropical juice. Even though the passion fruit tends to override most other aspects, the wheat presence is noted, and done well. Not excellent, a little too fruity, but still fine

Mouthfeel: Crisp and light, not watery or thin, just about right. You'd expect this to be syrupy due to the type of flavor its getting at, but it isn't

Drinkability: Very much so, like wheats. They have to excel in this category. This one does it fine.

12oz. brown bottle:

This is brewed for hot a weather climate and it makes no apologies for its refreshing light body and flavor profile.

The Passion Fruit comes through in a subtle way that works. This beer is not trying to be a Witbier or just another Hefeweizen. It has that Aloha-attitude in the bottle with the Hawaiian fruit character from the Passion Fruit, and for a hot day, it's quite a refreshing beer.

For a complex brew to contemplate sitting in front of the fireplace, this is not the right brew.

Ahhh Hawaii....what a strangely beautiful place to be....How does America own this island????

...this brew pours up a light straw color with a little white head... the nose is composed of slight honey and light malts... the taste is of dry fruit (the passion fruits?) and subtle spices... light bodied, low frizzy carbonation....

Had this on-tap at the Porter Bar in Atlanta. Better than I expected, but you definitely have to like fruit flavored beers in general and passion fruit specifically, because this beer is loaded with it. Its very good for what it is- a relatively light, clean wheat beer with lots of pure and fresh tasting passion fruit with a strong aroma of passion fruit on the nose as well. A good summer cooler, not too sweet or heavy, quenching, and light rather than super crisp. A little better on tap for sure.

Pours a bright yellow gold topped by a pure white frothy head. Crystal clear body. Smells of crisp wheat and strident passion fruit.

Crisp wheat malt in the mouth with a nicely balanced sweetness from the passion fruit. Crisp, light body. Nice clean finish with the lingering passion fruit sweetness in the finish.

It not a great beer but much better than I anticipated. If you like light wheat beer for summer drinking, it's worth a try.

Kona Wailua Wheat is yellowish in color with a fizzy body that produces a thin head of foam which collapses completely within minutes. This beer offers a nose that is fruity and, based solely on scent, it is difficult to tell if the beverage in front of you is beer or something else.

Tasting this beer quickly confirms that this is, indeed, a malt beverage. The dominant flavors are passionfruit, citrus, and a touch of pineapple, but there is also a nice dosage of wheat malt, pale barley, and some yeast flavor in the background. There is a slight tinge of bitterness in the finish, but it is washed away within seconds by the overall sweetness.

Many fruity beers taste excessively sweet and too fruity, but Kona Wailua Wheat, I am happy to report, has the balance down pat. Fruit flavor is certainly there, but at the same time, you can definitely tell that you have a glass of beer in front of you because the taste offers flavors of wheat and pale malt that are as obvious as the flavors of fruit. It's a pretty good summer beer product and it ranks as one of the better fruit beers I have tried.

A: Thin 1 finger head in the beginning that quickly diminishes leaving no residue on the glass. The color is straw gold with a slight unfiltered look very much like a pale wheat.

S: It had a very strong lemon citrus smell and raspberry mixed in with the typical wheat smell.

T: Slightly bitter wheat taste with a slightly infused fruit smell that I am guessing is the passion fruit which I have never had raw. I think I'll go to the store today and pick me up a passion fruit so I now what it is suppose to taste like.

M/D: Good light feel for a summer style beer that isn't syrupy nor to watery. Good drinkability especially for a summer day in the back yard or perhaps to take it on a hike.

A - Pours up golden clear with a thick head that dissipates quickly.

S - Fruity aroma, slightly sour? I've never tried passion fruit, so I guess that is what I'm smelling. It wasn't particularly appetizing.

T - There is a malt huskiness with a slightly tangy fruit flavor in the finish. It's a little hard for me to get used to.

M - Good mouthfeel with high carbonation

D - Once the initial flavor shock was over, this was a drinkable beer, with no palate spoilers.

A: pours a clear pale golden color with a decent white head that quickly runs away to hide. lacing is minimal.

S: Hrm, not so sure about this one. The smell is not very pleasant. First thing that comes to mind is a pile of wet clothes...that were urinated on. It's got a somewhat fruity, but mostly musty urine soaked fabric smell.

T: Taste seems to follow suit from the aroma. It's tastes really funky at first, with I guess a sweetness from the passion fruit, but the flavor from the fruit is just not working here.

M: Average, it's still beer.

D: Very sub par taste. Would definitely not drink again. Glad I picked up a single instead of the 6-pack.

A- pours bright yellow that is borderline flourescent, but not crystal clear. Brief appearance of white head.

S-Sweet and a bit of sour. Clearly some tropical flavors. Box said passion fruit. Doesn't smell lika beer.

T- Bright fruit up front followed by the creaminess of the wheat. Cool combo/contrast. Tropical flavors, peaches, apricot with a sour ness at the end. I like the change of pace.

M- Thin feel, I like the flavor contrasts. Very refreshing. Low on the carbonation

D- I like this change of pace beer. I am not a fruit beer guy, but this one is fun for the summer.

A: Poured from a bottle to a weizen glass. Had a pale yellow color and a cloudy texture. Not a whole lot of head.

S: Strong aroma of fruit and wheat, above anything else.

T: This beer had a very unusual flavor. Wheat, combined with passion fruit and some mild spices gave it a strange yet likable quality.

M: Good amount of carbonation and a smooth finish. Above medium-bodied.

D: This is one of those odd beers. I wouldn't say it's indicative of the style, by it has an oddly drinkable quality to it.

12oz bottle into pint glass.

Slightly hazy golden hue with a thin white head that quickly settles to a thin rim.

Light wheat aromas along with what I can only assume is passion fruit. Smells nice though.

Tart wheat grain mixed with sweet passion fruit flavors. It's a very sweet fruit along the lines of a peach, pineapple, or kiwi. Light bodied with good carbonation. The finish is lingering fruit.

Not a bad summer ale. Along with any other sweet fruit, the passion fruit seems to go well with the wheat. Recommended.

Lets be honest. This beer takes me back to the day of being a child in the grocery store with my mother. You are strolling around and tend to get lost here or there. Among one of those instances you stumble across a new toy. It has all the advertising appealing to the eye. You then run to your worried mother with the magical toy and say "mom, you have to get this for me, it says this...". She looks you in the eye and says, "thats not worth my money". But she gets it anyway, in some hope, it fills all the expectations and then some. This beer is exactly that.

Its perfect for those sunny summer days, where youve just got done mowing the lawn and havent showered in weeks. You know, stinky sweaty armpit. It does a great job of replicating that summer day. If passion fruit wheat beer taste like this then clearly I am not a fan of passion fruit in beer.

I must admit that I like this beer. Me and a friend picked up a six pack at Publix Supermarket out of curiousity...
A: Pours a hazy amber/orange color with a decent head that leaves a spotty lace around the glass
S: Interesting! A fruity nose (passion fruit), a distinct wheat nose, and malts are faintly present
T: Surprisingly fruity...not necessarily a bad thing, but just different. I detected some citrus notes, perhaps orange peel, spices, and a sweet fruit that I am assuming is passion fruit
MF: Very clean and smooth going down, good aftertaste
D: High

I enjoyed this beer alot, I think that it is creative to add passion fruit into a recipe and I respect its boldness! Worth a try

A – Pours 2 fingers of white head that has an ok retention and leaves some spider lacing. The beer is a hazy golden orange color.

S – Wheat malts and passion fruits as described on the label dominate the aroma.

M – A light bodied beer with a wet feeling to it and moderate carbonation.

T – Wheat malts and slight spiceness in the beginning, followed by orange and ending with a nice mix of passion fruits.

A nice combination of a wheat beer and passion fruits. It's not too “fruity” tasting giving a pretty good drinkability.

A pale, light gold body with some cloudiness and a fast receeding head that left some lacing. A light, airy tropical fruit smell, but nothing spectacular. Mild tropical flavors dominate the taste, creating a medium body that is somewhat muddled but goes down smooth. Some sweetness from wheat, but sometimes thin and crisp from different fruits on the backbite. A nice beer to have but it isn't something I would continually seek out/recommend strongly.

Picked this one up at the total wine in Greenville a couple weeks ago with the rest of the lineup and this one had been sitting in the fridge waiting for me. Twelve ounce bottle was served right out of the fridge. Served cold in a pint glass. Consumed on 08/05/2008.

The pour was nice with a very hazy bright golden yellow coming through immediately. Nice white puffy head on top quickly faded leaving behind a broken crown and some nice carbonation.

The aroma was odd. Very light and almost non existent at times. What was there seemed a touch artificial to me to be honest. Light grain and some off fruit notes, not very appealing at all. The flavor was a little bit better, but still very weak in my eyes. It started with a nice rush of light grain, some mild fruitiness as well. Light touches of peach and passion fruit I guess highlighting it, but leaving quickly with only a touch of light grass like flavor in the finish, which was itself short-lived. Very light body on this one, almost non existent to be honest, with a big carbonation profile. This would be session ale in the hottest of weather, however for a normal drinking day, I would pass.

Overall not terrible, average I would say. Just not enough depth for me and now wow factor here. Still though a decent effort.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle in to an imperial pint glass.

Pours a cloudy yellow with a nice white head.

I can smell a funky passion fruit on top of a wheaty, yeasty smell.

Very smoothe and bland if it weren't for the passionfruit hidden in the back. Easy to drink, but not a whole lot there.
