Longboard Island Lager is a smooth refreshing lager fermented and aged for five weeks at cold temperatures to yield its exceptionally smooth flavor. A delicate, slightly spicy hop aroma complements the malty body of this beer.

12 oz. bottle, with nearly indecipherable date of August 13, 2013 printed on the label. My first beer from Kona Brewing Co., and also my first beer from Hawaii! Expectations are about average based on this beer's current ratings.

Poured into a Miller Lite pint glass.

A - Pours your typical light lager gold colored body with excellent clarity. About one finger's worth of "ecru" foam appears and then disappears. No lacing. About average for the style.

S - Smell is of corn, grains, dust, and a sweet pilsner malt smell. On point for the style, I'd say, without any pervasive spice to throw it off.

T - Crisp carbonation, grainy corn, light citric lemon bite, sweet sugary malt profile. I definitely wouldn't mind drinking this on a desert island, that's for sure.

M - Feel is crisp, tart, and light bodied. Clean smooth grainy finish.

Overall, this was about what I expected (and hoped) it would be. A light, sessionable, flavorful lager beer with a practical easy drinking 4.60% abv. A good first beer for me from Kona Brewing, and I look forward to trying the others.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a clear medium golden color with a tiny fizzy white head. The head fades almost immediately leaving almost no lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is mainly of a caramely sweet nature mixed with some bready and grainy smells. Along with these smells there are some light aromas of yeast as well as some grassy smells.

Taste – The taste begins with a bready and sweet caramel taste. These create a base for the brew lasting throughout the flavor. As the flavors move from the initial taste, the beer sweetens as some sweeter corn flavors come to the tongue. Along with the sweet corn, so too comes some light hop tastes of a more herbal nature, leaving a sweet but still somewhat crisp flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is medium in its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is a bit on the higher side. The higher carbonation is very nice for the sweeter flavors of the brew making it easy drinking and refreshing.

Overall – Nothing too exceptional here. It is easy to drink, but overall a run of the mill lager.
