I really wanted to like this beer. The look was just the way I like: dark with a amber hue. The aroma wonderful dark, rich, with a hint of coconut. The beer poured well with a full 1" head in the craft pub glass I used. While I let it breath, I drank the last sip from the bottle. It was wonderful. Dark and malty with a believable hint of dark chocolate and the whiff of toasted coconut.

A few moments latter I sniffed the glass and swiftly took my first full sip. Wham. I was hit by the coconut. The more I drank the more the coconut overpowered. It was so good out of the bottle, I really wanted to like the glass. I couldn't finish. Maybe I'll give it another try but keep it in the bottle. Possibly I'm overwhelmed by the coconut aroma and I liked the first sip out of the bottle because my nose wasn't in the glass.

I've boughten this one a few times, and usually enjoy it. I've given it to some friends who typically all enjoyed it except for those who did not like coconut. It is very sweet, and crisp with the coconut. I do not recomend drinking a whole bunch of these but the first one is great but the sweetness can become too much after drinking more then a couple. Great for a celebration, something new and sweet.

A: An amber-brown with ruby highlights and excellent clarity. The light-tan head of creamy bubbles dissipates to a cap after a minute.

S: A moderate malt and moderate toasted coconut dominate the aroma. The malt has a moderate chocolate and low caramel, toasty and nutty notes. There is a low citrus hops note as well. There is a slight unpleasantness about the mix of coconut and low diacetyl but it goes away and on the whole still a good smelling beer.

T: A moderate malty flavor that is toasty with chocolate notes balanced with a medium-high bitterness. There are moderately-low citrus hops and coconut flavors and a low fruitiness. The there is a low sweetess in the middle giving way to moderately off-dry finish with a bitter, slightly malty and coconut finish.

M: This beer has medium-full body, a moderate level of carbonation and a very light astringency.

O: A dry than average version of an American Brown with a light touch of coconut. The base brown style is better than average with some great toasty malt aromas of chocolate and caramel that is complimented with the addition of toasted coconut.

This beer, on tap, is my favorite beer to drink by far, as far as drink ability goes. Malty, smooth, easy as hell to drink. And the coconut is powerful enough to be noticed, but not overpowering. Touch of bitterness at the end of the drink. Just a damn good beer. In the bottle it's coconut is not as noticeable, but still damn good.
Just drink it

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #50 (March 2011):

Coconut in beer? Where else would we expect this but from a Hawaiian brewer ... subtle extreme beer as well! Quick-forming head drops down almost as quickly to a thin lacing. Brown and clear. A bit of coconut and dark chocolate, a bit of a candy bar nose here. Body stands a little thin, and coconut flavor is quite prevalent. Maltiness does not really come forward—a quick smattering of toasted and very faint roasted malt. Balancing hoppiness does just that. Coconut flavor fades quick and a drink of toasted graininess is all that’s left. Not much to this Brown Ale other than the element of coconut, which perhaps saves this beer from being entirely pedestrian.

12oz bottle, dated 2/22/11. Pours a light brown with a medium creamy off-white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet (almost buttery) toasted coconut and lots of it with a little acidic chocolate.

The flavor is sweet brown sugar and coconut with some buttery chocolate and a very slight acidic bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is rather light bodied and watery.

Overall, interesting with lots of coconut but it's too one-dimensional and way too sweet.

A- A pretty shade of deep amber with a small beige film of a head which quickly fades.

S- A strong scent of sweet toasted coconut hits the nose first with a balancing of caramel, bread and a little roast following it. Very nice and a great coconut character.

T- The coconut doesn't seem as well balanced as the nose. Up front is a fruit (raisin and cherry) and light bread flavor which are quickly taken away by the delicious coconut middle, but the end is a strange mix of hop bitterness and sour coconut that, while interesting, isn't as good as the rest of the sip.

M- Medium body and carbonation make this one fill the mouth and dance across the tongue but also go down easily, pretty good.

D- Overall this is a solid beer that I wouldn't mind having another of. The finish and aftertaste aren't excellent but the smell is fantastic and it drinks pretty well.

Appearance: golden-brown in color, 1/3 inch head, clear, high carbonation

Smell: huge coconut, light toasted malt and nut

Taste: toasted malt, toasted coconut that gets more pronounced toward the end and earthy hops

Mouthfeel: light bodied, high carbonation, sweet start with a big bitter middle spike and a less bitter end.

Overall: I like coconut and this one is a nice specialty beer. I understand the necessity for some bitterness here, but to me it needs to be a little less sharp or perhaps a different type of hops. I like the uniqueness and would pick up another six pack, but there are others I would get first.

The beer pours a medium brown color with an off-white head. The aroma is full of chocolate and toffee notes, exactly what I expect from a big American brown ale. The flavor is more complex. There chocolate and toffee are still present, but the toasted coconuts also really come through and add to the overall flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very nice.

Single bottle from Knightly Spirits in Orlando.

Poured into a goblet. Light chestnut in colour, clear and with a half inch of bubbly foam. Survives as a thin ring.

Nose is definitely strongly of a potent coconut syrup, with a bit of caramel, bread and chocolate malt. If I were to imagine a brew from Hawaii this would be it.

The brew certainly tastes of coconut, but rather than being a subtle compliment to the brown ale base, the sweet coconut flavor dominates and becomes quite cloying. Really needs to be turned turned down a notch. Thin bodied, moderate carbonation.

It's tasty and fun, but Im unlikely to want more than a bottle of this.
