Pours a slightly amber, Newcastle-ish brown with a white-tan, half finger thick head. Lacing is high and persistent. Nose definitely puts across the promised coconut, along with some biscuity malt and dry hop characteristics. The overall impression is almost a faint toffee. Taste is to the malty side for an ale, the toasted coconut coming through rather subtly-sweet (although I see how it could get cloying for some people). Finish is surprisingly crisp, with something almost like maple syrup left on the tongue.

Maybe it's because I warmed up with a few Magic Hat #9's, but I found this beer surprisingly good. Good spring pick, and I'd definitely buy it again to share.

I have no idea why I bought a beer called "Koko" from Hawaii and didn’t think that it might have coconut in it. I can’t stand coconut. This beer is significantly coconutty. The base beer is sugary, like dimestore chocolate wafers. If you grew up on those wafers (which came in diabetic vanilla, radioactive pink, and kona brewing company chocolate flavors), you can take a trip down memory lane with this beer. I couldn’t finish half the bottle myself.

A- A pretty shade of deep amber with a small beige film of a head which quickly fades.

S- A strong scent of sweet toasted coconut hits the nose first with a balancing of caramel, bread and a little roast following it. Very nice and a great coconut character.

T- The coconut doesn't seem as well balanced as the nose. Up front is a fruit (raisin and cherry) and light bread flavor which are quickly taken away by the delicious coconut middle, but the end is a strange mix of hop bitterness and sour coconut that, while interesting, isn't as good as the rest of the sip.

M- Medium body and carbonation make this one fill the mouth and dance across the tongue but also go down easily, pretty good.

D- Overall this is a solid beer that I wouldn't mind having another of. The finish and aftertaste aren't excellent but the smell is fantastic and it drinks pretty well.

Brown in color with a finger of off-white head. The coconut certainly comes through on the aroma. Nice and nutty as well. There's also a hint of vanilla to it. Quite sweet with plenty of toffee and caramel, too. Lots and lots of coconut flavor with the toast, nuts, and sweet malt taking a bit of a back seat on this one. Nice balance of sweetness and toast/roast malt flavors to prevent it from being cloying.

Bottle into a pint glass

Pours a orange-copper color with a 3/4" off white head.

The coconut smell hits the nose right away. Just what I was hoping for. The taste, however, leaves a little to be desired. A typical brown ale for the most part, with a slight coconut flavor in the aftertaste/swallow.

A silky mouthful (more like a milk stout), this is a very smooth drink. I would have liked a little more of a bite to it. The coconut aftertaste was good, but would have liked a little more on the front end.

I would have another, if offered.

Average dark brown ale, 3/4" head on the top, a mild tan head, decent lace on it. Aroma was the usual suspect brown malt, I didn't really pick up much in the way of coconut, but the packaging kept making me look for it and think I may have found it, but really, I don't know, but the mild chocolate it had going for it was nice.

Taste, maybe the coconut is the lactose like aspect in the mouthfeel. A pretty smooth beer. Consistent throughout, some additional sweetness grows out of the lactose-ishness. Its decent, but at the same time conventional like most brown ales aim to be. I'd like to see a thicker version of this, not necessarily higher alcohol, but bigger, more coconut, vanilla, but stick with the brown malt.

A - poured with a small head of off white foam on a clear, amber brown body. The head fades quickly and leaves little lace.

S - toasty amber malt with some toffee and a hint of fruity coconut.

T - dark caramel and toasted grain up front. Some dark sugar in the middle with a nutty character and light bitterness balancing in the finish.

M - A medium-thick, oily body, moderate carbonation, and a subtly sweet finish.

D - not bad, it is clearly a well made brown ale at heart. The coconut definitely has an effect, though I can't decide if it helps or hurts in the end.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a Pint glass

A: very nice dark color with a thin brown tinted head that dissipates pretty quickly

S: smell of toasty coconut (obviously) and a nice hint of vanilla. You really get a toasted smell when it comes to the cocnut and vanilla, not bad.

T: taste is very similar to the smell you get. The vanilla and coconut come across as soon as you sip and it has a very small but nice bite at the end.

M: Not a lot of carbonation, but I think it’s a decent amount. Really smooth as the tastes come across. The feel was really right in the middle, not too light and not heavy.

Overall I was pretty impressed. I didn’t expect for the flavors to come across as well as they did and the vanilla was definitely a nice surprise. I think they definitely hit the nail on the head going for a “toasted coconut” kind of thing.

Pours a nice translucent brown with a thick, off-white head. Splotchy lacing sticks to the glass, but fades quickly.

Coconut and malty chocolate sweetness cover most of the smell.

Brown sugar, toasted coconut, dark chocolate and bitter earth start the taste. A hint of vanilla and toffee at the end. A little thin in the mouth.

I heart coconut, so this brew is right up my alley. Goes well with BBQ Chicken pizza.

im almost ashamed to admit it, but this beer tastes great! pours an innocous looking brown ale color, and has the same smell as a basic american brown ale, with that roasty malty sweetness and body, but this has a hint of fresh coconut in the nose, not milky and sweet and artificial, but islandic and raw. flavor is pronounced coconut up front. like drinking the water from one in a tree in south india, or like a mounds bar. touch of cocoa in there too, this feels more drinkable than it should. its not deserty at all, and is lighter than it looks in feel. overall one of kona's best beers that i have had. very unique and very memorable. definitely buy this if you like coconuts

theres a date on the bottle, DEC 16 11, not really sure what it means though.... 12 oz bottle.

A: a beautiful dark mahogany hue. clear. head is slightly tinted with brown but does not stick around for long. lacing is patchy.

S: vanilla beans. coconut. maybe a little bit of wood. am i drinking something thats barrel aged or just an american brown? i dont really care, cause this is a pretty unique aroma on a brown.

T: really get a lot of vanilla as well as some coconut across the palate. similar to the nose. but not nearly as big. after the sweet coconut subsides, a biscuit-like flavor comes out. finish is a little bittersweet.

M: pretty moderate amount of carbonation. medium body.

D: pretty unique brown here. flavor is distinctively coconut filled as well as loads of vanilla notes. not sure how many of these i could drink, however, one is just fine with me.

A- Reddish dark brown, very slight head, slight lacing, below average carbonation.

S- Sweet smelling of coconuts and nuts.

T- A typical nutty brown ale taste mixed with sweet coconut flavor.

M- Medium bodied, average carbonation, nicely balanced.

O- Although not one of my favorites, I definitely enjoyed this beer. It had the typical brown ale taste and smell, but the sweet coconut flavor mixed in well and was not too over powering. Would definitely drink again.

Picked up a 12 oz bottle of this at a small store in CT.

Appearance is brown with 1/2 finger of white head. Its`nose most certainly contains coconut, along with malts and sugar. Koko Brown tastes of nuts, a good amount of coconut and more malts. It is a flavor that is not too overpowering in any aspect and the mouthfeel is medium with a crisp finish. A good beer, which is worth picking up.

Pours a nice light, bright, clear brown with a tinge of orange throughout. Smallish off-white head.
Smell is rich with cocoanut, roasted malt and a sweetness like cane sugar partially caramelized.
Taste is toasted cocoanut, malt, that same semi- caramelized sugar and vanilla.
Medium bodied with a nice brown ale medium effervescence. A touch of dryness in the quite watery finish. A solid, if only middle of the pack, brown. They've done better but could do far worse.

12 ounce bottle - $1.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. Bottled Dec 20, 2011.

Appearance: Pours out a dark, brown-reddish body with a sudsy, ecru head that steadily thins, though never fades away.

Smell: Toasted loaf bread, chocolate powder, toasted coconut shavings, maybe a light, addition fruitiness. It's a brown ale flavored with coconut, what do you expect?

Taste: Soundly toasted Munich malt given a layer of semi-sweet chocolate and small but reliant hint of brown sugar. Lightly herbal hops with a soft, low level of bitterness. Sweetish, semi-dry finish with the maltiness lingering gently into the aftertaste. It's a brown ale flavored with coconut, what do you expect?

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Indeed, it is a brown ale flavored with coconut. If any part of that statement gives you pause, then this isn't for you.

A - Nothing too fancy...clear brown with large carbonation bubbles and quick fading head.

S - One of the most coconut forward beers I've smelled. Coconut is candied like in an almond joy bar and is semi-sweet. A little caramel malt aroma behind it as well. Not too complex but pleasing for sure if you like coconut.

T - First immediate flavor from a sip is just standard brown ale but the toasted coconut kicks in very quickly. The flavor follows the nose as the coconut tastes candied and just a hint of sweetness. Finishes with a caramel, light molasses and coconut aftertaste. Unique.

M/O - Medium to light body and on the lower scale for style carbonation. Leaves the palate neutral and not too drying. The aftertaste fades sort of quickly and it very easy to drink.

A fun beer, if you don't like coconut don't try it.

A: poured into a pint at Amsterdam In SF. It pours a clear mahogany - reddish brown. It has a small tan head with fine lacing and small carbonation running up the beer.

S: It smells like coconut! Like the candied coconut - like the kind you get in an Almond Joy candy bar. I also get sweet milk notes a hint of chocolate. It's mainly coconut though.

T: The taste is predominantly roasted sweet coconut, with some light malts, a hint of nut, and a touch of hops to balance the milky sweet.

M&O: The mouthfeel is not too heavy, more of a medium light body. The sweetness in it is light making it drinkable and easygoing. Not a terribly complex beer. The coconut is so predominant that it makes this just a simple beer that you can easily drink without much thought.

Appearance - Pours a dark, ruby brown with a nice head which dissipates rather quickly, leaving behind a very thin lace.

Smell - Light coconut, floral notes. Very faint.

Taste - Beautiful shredded coconut, lightly roasted cocoa malts... is that a menthol note playing in the background?

Mouthfeel - Light in body, with a decent amount of carbonation to tingle the senses.

Overall - This is a great spring beer. It just might be my favorite Kona offering. This and pipeline are neck and neck. Why Kona doesn't offer both these beers year-round is beyond me, because they are by far Kona's best two beers.

This is the Kona Brewing Company's Koko Brown Ale, their coconut-influenced nut brown ale. The Koko Brown pours out a dark brown color, not quite as dark as the picture suggests. The foam on top is a light cream color, that starts fairly thick but fades quickly.

The aromas are subtle, dominated by roasted malts with a just a touch of nutty aromas. With some vigorous swirling in the glass I can pick up a little bit of that coconut I've heard so much about, but really only as an underlying layer.

The flavor profile is equally subtle. It's a soft brown ale, dominated by roasted (nearly burnt) malts with just a small influence of coconut and nut flavors. I let the brew come closer to room temperature to see if I get a little more, but I'm unfortunately disappointed. Actually as the Koko Brown comes up to temperature, it's becoming somewhat less drinkable. Sorry, but I'm not excited about this one.

Pours a bright and clear brown color with a very nice off white head, good lacing too. Looks really good in the glass.

Aromas are odd, very roasted notes of fruit, not really getting a whole lot of coconut. Grainy, grassy, vegetal, and kind of floral. Some sniffs I like this, others, not so much.

Taste starts out with roasted sweet coconut, light cocoa, and slightly roasted malt flavors. While this beer tastes good, the added flavors adds almost an artificial taste and not typical sweetness to this beer.

Mouthfeel is full and smooth with pretty good carbonation.

Overall? Ehhh... Not a fan, tastes like a bland brown ale with lots of non beer flavors added. Not a terrible beer, but I wont be buying this one again,

Appearance: (3.5)
- Pours a clear and dark cola/tea brown with about a finger of white foamy head which has settled to a very thin layer above the brew, and a slightly bubbly ring on the edges of the glass. Overall not a bad looking beer.

Smell: (3.5)
- Smells like a wonderful bready grainy brown. Subtle sweet notes with some nice yeasty bread. Light brown sugar and coconut sweetness. Overall the smell is good.

Taste: (4.0)
- Nice beer. Balanced, lightly sweet brown sugar and malt, nice light roasted coconut flavors, just the right grassy bittering hops and a fantastic fresh and smooth finish. A very solid brew.

Mouth Feel: (3.5)
- Light to medium bodied brew, well carbonated with tiny bubbles, and is just a touch chewy and cloying.. but still thin and sessionable. Easy to drink.

Overall: (4.0)
- This is a tasty hit of a beer, and one I am sure to buy again. It's taste is its best trait, and it is very balanced and good. I was expecting a mediocre brown like so many, but was pleasantly surprised with the light sweet coconut flavors, and the perfect use of hops in this beer. Go try it!

Pours a medium clear orange-brown with a good chunky tan head, some foam clinging to the edge. Head dissipates to nothing.

You really get the toasted coconut in the nose, a nutty sweet aroma that is not overpowering. But, I'm looking for malt, and get none.

The long lingering aftertaste of coconuts and toasted nuts. A little cocoa somewhere, or maybe I'm looking for an Almond Joy in a glass. So, coconut up front, mild bitterness and some malt in the middle, a bit toasty but there. Malt and light bitterness in the finish. The surprise is the mildness of the coconut in the finish. Well played - this works.

Medium bodied. Some decent carbonation.

Overall, not bad. I cannot see sessioning this, probably 2 would be my limit. But for a gimmick brew, they did this right. No real overkill. Interesting burps!!!

M: Very thin and watery. Almost like a somewhat flat soda.

O: Not a bad little flavored brown ale.
