Pours a nice light, bright, clear brown with a tinge of orange throughout. Smallish off-white head.
Smell is rich with cocoanut, roasted malt and a sweetness like cane sugar partially caramelized.
Taste is toasted cocoanut, malt, that same semi- caramelized sugar and vanilla.
Medium bodied with a nice brown ale medium effervescence. A touch of dryness in the quite watery finish. A solid, if only middle of the pack, brown. They've done better but could do far worse.

12 ounce bottle - $1.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. Bottled Dec 20, 2011.

Appearance: Pours out a dark, brown-reddish body with a sudsy, ecru head that steadily thins, though never fades away.

Smell: Toasted loaf bread, chocolate powder, toasted coconut shavings, maybe a light, addition fruitiness. It's a brown ale flavored with coconut, what do you expect?

Taste: Soundly toasted Munich malt given a layer of semi-sweet chocolate and small but reliant hint of brown sugar. Lightly herbal hops with a soft, low level of bitterness. Sweetish, semi-dry finish with the maltiness lingering gently into the aftertaste. It's a brown ale flavored with coconut, what do you expect?

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Indeed, it is a brown ale flavored with coconut. If any part of that statement gives you pause, then this isn't for you.

A - Nothing too fancy...clear brown with large carbonation bubbles and quick fading head.

S - One of the most coconut forward beers I've smelled. Coconut is candied like in an almond joy bar and is semi-sweet. A little caramel malt aroma behind it as well. Not too complex but pleasing for sure if you like coconut.

T - First immediate flavor from a sip is just standard brown ale but the toasted coconut kicks in very quickly. The flavor follows the nose as the coconut tastes candied and just a hint of sweetness. Finishes with a caramel, light molasses and coconut aftertaste. Unique.

M/O - Medium to light body and on the lower scale for style carbonation. Leaves the palate neutral and not too drying. The aftertaste fades sort of quickly and it very easy to drink.

A fun beer, if you don't like coconut don't try it.

A: poured into a pint at Amsterdam In SF. It pours a clear mahogany - reddish brown. It has a small tan head with fine lacing and small carbonation running up the beer.

S: It smells like coconut! Like the candied coconut - like the kind you get in an Almond Joy candy bar. I also get sweet milk notes a hint of chocolate. It's mainly coconut though.

T: The taste is predominantly roasted sweet coconut, with some light malts, a hint of nut, and a touch of hops to balance the milky sweet.

M&O: The mouthfeel is not too heavy, more of a medium light body. The sweetness in it is light making it drinkable and easygoing. Not a terribly complex beer. The coconut is so predominant that it makes this just a simple beer that you can easily drink without much thought.

Appearance - Pours a dark, ruby brown with a nice head which dissipates rather quickly, leaving behind a very thin lace.

Smell - Light coconut, floral notes. Very faint.

Taste - Beautiful shredded coconut, lightly roasted cocoa malts... is that a menthol note playing in the background?

Mouthfeel - Light in body, with a decent amount of carbonation to tingle the senses.

Overall - This is a great spring beer. It just might be my favorite Kona offering. This and pipeline are neck and neck. Why Kona doesn't offer both these beers year-round is beyond me, because they are by far Kona's best two beers.

This is the Kona Brewing Company's Koko Brown Ale, their coconut-influenced nut brown ale. The Koko Brown pours out a dark brown color, not quite as dark as the picture suggests. The foam on top is a light cream color, that starts fairly thick but fades quickly.

The aromas are subtle, dominated by roasted malts with a just a touch of nutty aromas. With some vigorous swirling in the glass I can pick up a little bit of that coconut I've heard so much about, but really only as an underlying layer.

The flavor profile is equally subtle. It's a soft brown ale, dominated by roasted (nearly burnt) malts with just a small influence of coconut and nut flavors. I let the brew come closer to room temperature to see if I get a little more, but I'm unfortunately disappointed. Actually as the Koko Brown comes up to temperature, it's becoming somewhat less drinkable. Sorry, but I'm not excited about this one.

Pours a bright and clear brown color with a very nice off white head, good lacing too. Looks really good in the glass.

Aromas are odd, very roasted notes of fruit, not really getting a whole lot of coconut. Grainy, grassy, vegetal, and kind of floral. Some sniffs I like this, others, not so much.

Taste starts out with roasted sweet coconut, light cocoa, and slightly roasted malt flavors. While this beer tastes good, the added flavors adds almost an artificial taste and not typical sweetness to this beer.

Mouthfeel is full and smooth with pretty good carbonation.

Overall? Ehhh... Not a fan, tastes like a bland brown ale with lots of non beer flavors added. Not a terrible beer, but I wont be buying this one again,

Appearance: (3.5)
- Pours a clear and dark cola/tea brown with about a finger of white foamy head which has settled to a very thin layer above the brew, and a slightly bubbly ring on the edges of the glass. Overall not a bad looking beer.

Smell: (3.5)
- Smells like a wonderful bready grainy brown. Subtle sweet notes with some nice yeasty bread. Light brown sugar and coconut sweetness. Overall the smell is good.

Taste: (4.0)
- Nice beer. Balanced, lightly sweet brown sugar and malt, nice light roasted coconut flavors, just the right grassy bittering hops and a fantastic fresh and smooth finish. A very solid brew.

Mouth Feel: (3.5)
- Light to medium bodied brew, well carbonated with tiny bubbles, and is just a touch chewy and cloying.. but still thin and sessionable. Easy to drink.

Overall: (4.0)
- This is a tasty hit of a beer, and one I am sure to buy again. It's taste is its best trait, and it is very balanced and good. I was expecting a mediocre brown like so many, but was pleasantly surprised with the light sweet coconut flavors, and the perfect use of hops in this beer. Go try it!

Pours a medium clear orange-brown with a good chunky tan head, some foam clinging to the edge. Head dissipates to nothing.

You really get the toasted coconut in the nose, a nutty sweet aroma that is not overpowering. But, I'm looking for malt, and get none.

The long lingering aftertaste of coconuts and toasted nuts. A little cocoa somewhere, or maybe I'm looking for an Almond Joy in a glass. So, coconut up front, mild bitterness and some malt in the middle, a bit toasty but there. Malt and light bitterness in the finish. The surprise is the mildness of the coconut in the finish. Well played - this works.

Medium bodied. Some decent carbonation.

Overall, not bad. I cannot see sessioning this, probably 2 would be my limit. But for a gimmick brew, they did this right. No real overkill. Interesting burps!!!

A: A clear dark brown with a very thin line of bubbles on top.

S: Toasted malt and toasted coconut.

T: There is a sweet toasted coconut flavor mixed with a nutty toasted malt flavor. There's also a peach-like fruit flavor in the finish with a bit of hop.

M: Very thin and watery. Almost like a somewhat flat soda.

O: Not a bad little flavored brown ale.

Bottled Feb 01, 2011 13:30 WA.

Bottle to a NBB Globe.

A - The beer pours a translucent brown that is so thick you aren't able to see through. A nice 2 finger white head but not much retention, decent lacing.

S - A malty sweetness on the nose immediately. The toasted coconut comes in a little on the back end, though the dominant aroma is malt.

T - The beer starts with a definite sweetness from the toasted malts. The sweetness lasts throughout the draw. Mild bitterness. The coconut comes through on the middle to back end and meshes nicely with the malty sweetness. The beer finishes with a lingering sweetness and a nice coconut flavor.

M - Medium bodied with good carbonation.

D - Better than average though it'd be hard to put a lot down as it's so sweet.

Note: This review was a re-post from my former account, jmkratt, which was hacked and I lost all my reviews...sorry for the redundancy.

12 oz bottle pours a crystal clear copperish brown color with a small, even cap of beige head. Not much for retention and lacing.

Nose definitely shows some coconut, also a fair amount of nutty maltiness. Moderately sweet and just a bit of chocolate. Smells real good, I am a total coconut fiend though.

Not as sweet as I thought it would be, which is a good thing in this case because the coconut (along with the malts) gives off plenty of sweet impressions. Id say the coconut is just as apparent in this as the Maui CoCoNut Porter. I think I actually like this one more, not to mention it is a dollar cheaper and you get 50% more! Very easy to drink, nice and smooth. I wouldnt mind a silkier, richer mouthfeel...but other than that I am pleasantly surprised by this beer. I foresee a few more six-pack purchases in my future.

A: A medium/dark brown with red hues. It has a one finger head that lasts for a couple of minutes.

S: Sweet. It has aromas of caramel, malt, and coconut.

T: Very smooth and very sweet. The coconut is there but not overpowering. The dominate flavor is the caramel.

M: It has good carbonation and retention.

O: I think it is worth trying if you have never had a coconut beer but this type of beer is not my style.

A - Pours reddish/mahogany brown into my snifter with about one finger on tan head that has moderate retention and lacing.

S - Sweet caramel malts, toasted coconut and mild vanilla and cocoa notes.

T - Sweet malts and coconut are noticeable but fade quickly, toasted nuttiness, mild cocoa and vanilla. Flavors are very muted with the exception of coconut.

M - Fairly light and thin.

O - Overall an easy drinker and people who like coconut most likely would enjoy it. I'd say it's worth trying, but not seeking out.

Poured from bottle into tulip.
Pours a chocolate color brown..almost like a coke.
No head, but a bit of lacing is present.
Smell is so good. Toasted coconuts and malts dominate.
Taste is wonderful. Again, toasted coconut is present, but works so well with the toasy malts. I taste a bit of chocolate as well.
Slightly dry finish but crisp, fresh, and refreshing. I really like this brew. This is my first one since having it at the Brewery in 2010...and I loved it then. So glad to see it here on the east coast. I will be buying this for sure again and again. One of, if not my actual favorite brown...and I usually dont love brown ales...
Cheers!

ST: 12oz poured into a pint glass. Bottle does not list ABV but does list BOD.

A: Clear chestnut brown with a half-a-finger slightly off-white head.

S: Strong sweet coconut, malt, and nuts.

T: Sweet coconut, lots of nuts, some roasted malt, toasted smokey notes and slight hops in the finish for balancing.

M: Surprisingly light and dry.

O: Interesting aroma and acceptable flavor. The mouthfeel should be heavier though to match the toasted sweet coconut and smoke. On the other hand, this is a brewery in Hawaii; I doubt a heavy beer would go well there.

Smells about like a typical brown ale. I get yeast and a bit of mild malt, but no coconuts.

Dark ruby appearance, clean and clear.

Not really any coconut on the tongue, either. It just tastes like a brown ale. There is a presence of toasted malts, but thankfully not burned malt. Hops are lightly present, more so in the after taste.

Typical mouthfeel, about like a Newcastle.

T-pretty mild brown ale taste with the coconut in the background. Yum!

The beer poured a clear medium coffee brown. The white bubbly head builds no more than one finger high and dissipates fast, leaving little lacing.
The smell is a combination of coconut , roasted malts and a little coffee.
The taste is pretty much the same, the malts dominating the end.
This is a medium to light bodied beer and was a little to shallow for my taste. It is very drinkable, but I probably won't buy it again.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint.

Pours a fairly clear brown color with a decent head. Aroma is sweet malts, grains, and coconut. The taste is a nice mix of coconut and sweet malts. The malts really start to take over on the finish. The mouthfeel is smooth with a medium level of carbonation, and the drinkabilty is good. Overall, a solid brown ale with just a bit of a twist.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Appearance is a clear dark brown with a one finger off-white head. Minimal lacing.

Smell is dark roasted malt with a little bit of chocolate and coconut.

Flavor has plenty of roasted malt but coconut also is front and center. Good chocolate flavor as well all blending together to create a wonderful taste. A tiny bit of hop bitterness is there to level out the sweetness. It's almost like a Mounds bar in a glass.

Overall a wonderful beer for someone who loves coconut.

Got a sixer at Specs in Round Rock.

This is a pretty polarizing beer. If you like the candybar Mounds, you'll love this beer...if you don't, you more than likely will give it poor marks.

Deep mahogany/dark brown pour with a thin head, decent whispy lacing left behind on my pint glass. I liked the look.

Certainly getting the coconut pulp taste...along with some roasted sweet malt.

Wow...that's a huge kick of coconut...super sweet. Getting some chocolate and roasted nut as well...certainly different than your average brown ale. A bit overpowering with the coconut, but I could see how some would really love this. A bit too thin on the backend, but very easy to drink, especially with the 5.5 abv.

Quite an interesting take on a brown ale. Aloha Koko Brown.

On tap at The House of Brews.

A – Poured out a dark brown with about a finger of off white head that drops to a thin lacing.

S – Pretty sweet smell with roasted malt, chocolate and vanilla. Coconut.

T – Had a fairly large coconut flavor right out of the gate. Pretty standard brown ale after the coconut fades. Has some chocolate and coffee flavor along with a touch of roasted malt. Nutty at the end.

M – Medium bodied and fairly good carbonation. Pretty smooth.

O – I liked this beer but I love all things coconut. I think it’s a fairly average brown but the coconut is my cup of tea. If you are not a coconut fan its not for you. I will take it anyday.

A short-lived whitish cap topped the coppery brown beer. Nice clarity, a bit of lacing. Roasted, toasted aroma with coconut and floral character, some coffee. Similar flavour profile, with malt sweetness more prominent than bitterness. Lots of toast, coconut and roast, some nuttiness mid-palate. Lingering floral bitterness. Medium bodied and on the dry side, moderate carbonation, but thinned out a little in the finish. Decent overall, as long as you don't mind coconut.
