Had this on tap at their Hawaii Kai restaurant.

Beautiful dark porter. Very dark. Nice creamy brown head. Nice lacing.

Smell was dark coffee with smokiness. Taste was similar. Smoky. Coffee. Dark chocolate was evident. A little too much bitter aftertaste for my liking, but many might find this perfect for an American porter.

The mouthfeel was fine. Somewhat cleansing. Overall, I thought I would like this more than I did. One glass was enough. Perhaps eating some chocolate dessert would have made this beer more impressive [though Kona's Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Stout would be a more perfect way to end the meal].

Imbibed at the brewery pub in Kona. Arrived in a pint glass an opaque brown with a dark tan head. On the taste the milk chocolate flavor stands out up front with a chalky hoppiness finishes sweet and sour with a strong chocolate fade. Creamy mouthfeel. Great brew.

Kona Black Sand Porter...on tap at MJ Armstrong's

Appearance-dark brown to light black, crackling lace but it isn't that large of a head.

Smell-A lot of coffee, really sweet sort of chocolate aroma as well.

Taste/Mouthfeel-sweet and a lot of coffee flavors but actually sort of light on the tongue, smooth and well rounded.

Drinkability-in spite of the alcohol really smooth and drinkable, tastes lighter than it is.

Overall-a very well made porter, hits the style well, flavorful, easy to drink. Can't ask for much more.

One of the best porters there is....period. Great notes of both chocolate and coffee. Slight vanilla hint in the end. Smooth as can be. Big downfall is that it's found in Hawaii only. If ever visiting Oahu or the Big Island, definitely visit Kona Brewing. Not only is the beer great on tap, the food is just as good.

Dark brown color where sunlight passes. Small beige head which leaves many interconnected spots on the glass.

Very nice classic Porter aroma.

Lots of dark chocolate flavor up front. Semisweet cocoa flavor. The combination is elevated but the body holds up with it. It provided a counterpoint to the spicy food I ordered. The aftertaste lingers with a bit of alcohol warmth.

Pours a black color. 1/3 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, roasted malt, hops, and slight yeast. Fits the style of a smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of roasted malt, hint of coffee, sweet malt, hops, and slight yeast. Overall, good appearance, decent blend, and good body.
