A full-bodied, American-Style I.P.A. that is bronze in color, Castaway IPA is "dry hopped" (aged with liberal amounts of whole hop flowers after fermentation) for assertive hop flavor and aroma. The bitterness is balanced by the malty body of the beer.

I first had this beer on tap in Santa Cruz California and its been a favorite since. On the smell I get tropical fruits reminiscent of oranges and citrus and slight mango. Its got a bite right away with a bready malt character in the middle of the taste ending with a bitter orange mango taste. This is an Hawaii beer for sure.

The bitterness is right there and really there to remind you how this is no average IPA. The flavor backs up the bitter. This beer should be ranked way higher. Its got all the flavor of your favorite IPA plus the bitterness and at 7.99 a 6 pack....seriously? What a great beer and brewery!

Appearance -golden yellow with a fair head.

Smell - Great aroma similar to fresh bread and citrus.

Taste - Wonderful full bodied taste.

Mouthfeel - smooth, perfectly carbonated

Drinkability- Very drinkable willing to drive to Kona to get another.

I visited the Kona Brewery a few weeks ago and this particular beer is still fresh in my memory. So if you are hanging out in Kona it's worth it to visit the brewery and the pub next door.

Really good ipa, very drinkable, good hop flavor slight bitterness with a nice malt balance. To me this is more comparable to some of the popular pale ales out now, this has a session ipa feel to it. Low carbonation and light aftertaste leaves a little to be desired but an overall great beer

Had this one while I was living in Hawaii. This is one fine IPA -- as well as the best brew offered by Kona. The appearance is is amber with a cloudy look to it. The smell is of malt and hops. The taste is the perfect balance of malt and bitterness from the hops. The hops never overpower this brew while the malt is definitely there to make it a tasty IPA.

If it wasn't for the ABV, this would be a very sessionable brew. Did I mention that this is my favorite brew from Kona? :)

Pours a clear tangerine, half finger of head, spotty lacing

Smell is a ton of bright orange, lemon, grapefruit, mango a little pineapple, maybe a little strawberry with a hint pine and caramel. Really bright and citrusy smelling.

Tastes is more of the same, grapefruit, orange, lemon, pineapple, citrus peel, bittering pine, bitter grapefruit, finishes with a light and I mean light sweet malt bite

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side, medium carbonation light drying but still rather refreshing

Well now, this is exactly the kind of beer I would want if I was on a beach or something! Really refreshing, really, really easy drinking, almost a little to easy. Very tasty, give it a shot if fruity ipas are your thing.

I used to live in Kona, 25 years of drinking & brewing IPA and this was my all time favorite, until last year it was knocked into 2nd place by Sweetwater's IPA (Atlanta, GA).

Smells great, exceptional hopping and a stellar taste. If you are ever in Kona, get a pitcher of this and the brewery also makes some of the best food on the island (under $100 a person - LOL)

Shocked in a great way as I've had another Kona beer that just wasn't as enjoyable as I thought it would be but this one really shocked me in such a great way that after having one, I didn't have a 2nd thought about ordering another. Great IPA.

Had on tap at the Koko Marina brewpub on Oahu. The beer was dark copper color with a thin foam which laced nice. The aroma and flavor were much better than I expected, hops dominated but there was a good malt component to it. I think this could actually be compared with some DIPA's, it was assertive and tasty.

Just a little thicker than average mouthfeel, and completely drinkable. I wanted more, this competes with Da Grind for the best beer Kona makes.

Served on draft at Kona Brewpub, Kona HI 5-5-07. Pours a beautiful dark gold color but has no head and no retention. The appearance was the only detracting part of the beer. Not much carbonation which is okay I suppose.

Aroma is hops and caramel. Smells like a true IPA. Not a whole lot of the grass and hay but more the citrus type. Wonderful aromas.

Crisp, clean, smooth taste with plenty of hops power to bring out that bitterness. Very well balanced with some smooth caramel malts and even a bit of wheat flavors.

This was probably my favorite of the Kona Brewpub beers. Pipeline is good but this was my fave. Certainly have this one when at the pub in either Hawaii or Oahu.

I tried Castaway IPA at the Kailua-Kona brewpub on three occasions in the space of five days. Tasty-tasty stuff.

Appearance: The IPA pours a healthy copper colour with an off-white head of about 1/2 inch.

Smell: Hoppy - nice and inviting. I haven't mastered my senses enough yet to isolate which kinds, but if you are a hop-head you will want to try this one.

Taste: The taste has a quick hop bite, followed by a nice malty bulk of the taste. It finishes with a lingering hoppy bitterness. The kind of taste I tend to crave.

Mouthfeel: Very nice on the tongue. Fills the palate, very much as you'd expect with the American IPA style.

Drinkability: Clocking in at 6.8% abv, I wouldn't call this beer sessionable, but it is a very tasty brew. It is very tempting to accept a second when offered one by the bartenders at Kona Brewing.

I would put this American IPA on a level close to the best of the style. This one isn't bottled so if you get to one of the KBC pubs, I'd highly recommend giving this one a try.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle to a tulip glass.

A: Deep golden to light orange. Just a slight bit of haze. A finger of white head. Decent carbonation.
S: Very nice notes of pineapple and mandarin from the hops. Slight hint of pine. However, there is a trace smell of ammonia.
T: Nice citrus flavors with grapefruit and pine being the most prominent flavors. Nice amount of bitterness, but not too much. Strong malt base. Very nice.
M: Medium-bodied. Dry finish with not too bad of an aftertaste. Crisp.
O: A very nice IPA from the beautiful land of Hawaii. Only 7.99 a six pack too. Refreshing and would definitely get again.

On tap at the brewery.

Pours a dark clear gold color, with a faint head.

Aromas are of piney hops and a bit of caramel malts.

Mouthfeel is nice, thick and pretty full up front. Beer has a subtle caramel malt flavor, and a nice slightly sweet grapefruit hop finish. There is a very resiny hop flavor as well.

Best beer I have had in Hawaii. Very nice IPA, good flavors, easy to drink, and not to overwhelming.

Danky and citrusy - I was shocked at how good this was. Maybe I had too low of expectations going in. If you've been passing this over for other 6-packs you definitely need to give this one a chance.

I tried Kona Brewing a year ago, but that was before I was into reviewing. I picked up a fresh batch, chilled it, and poured into a nice tall glass. It has 6.0% ABV and 50 IBUs and lots to offer so let’s take a gulp!

Look-It poured a surprisingly light golden color for an IPA. It almost looks like a lager! The clarity was true and persistent. The head was like a lemon-merengue pie, but with some larger bubbles frothing on the side. It started out at two fingers thick and slowly settled down to just under a finger all the way down.

Smell-It had a dank and pungent smell that reminded me of—dare I say—cannabis. I smelled it very clearly every time so I was forced to review the true aroma of this unique brew. On top of that, I get honey-malts and floral, mango hops that beg one to take a sip.

Taste-It has a noticeable mango and floral hop part superposed on the honey-suckle malt base. There are also some overtones of pineapple and maybe some coconut which makes for a truly Hawaiian experience lending to the name.

Mouthfeel-It is medium-bodied but just slightly underbalanced to let the hops shine through stronger than the malts.

Overall- The hops are the champions of this beer and are not too bitter, but instead serve up an explosion on the palate of typical Hawaiian fruits and flavors. The malts are shy, but fine-tuned and honey-suckle based which plays well with the tropical and herbal hops. A must try for all!

Appearance: Pours a golden bronze color.

Overall: Tastes of a sweet malt balanced by tropical hops. Only slightly bitter. Very tasty beer with good balance. Highly recommend but not for pure hop heads. You won't find the bitterness you like.

Almost like a hoppy, light porter. Tasted a dank, resiny, caramel/toffee wafer kind of flavor. Like a Coffee Crisp chocolate bar. Surprising and pretty nice.

The people giving this low ratings are either clueless or brand-snobs. This is a phenomenal IPA. I've just had my first taste of it tonight, and it's the first time in quite a while that I've been stunned (in a good way) by a beer I'd never heard of before. I highly recommend it.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of white head that slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A juicy, earthy, and crisp hop forward aroma with hints of citrus fruit and pine. Citrus hops with upfront hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, pineapple, lemon, and tangerine. Earthy and floral hops with some hints of grass and pine resin. Solid backing of bready malt with hints of caramel, grains, cracker, biscuit, and yeast. A pretty solid IPA aroma.

Taste: Like the nose hints at, a very juicy and nicely earthy hop forward taste with big notes of citrus fruit and pine. Citrus hops with upfront juicy notes of mango, grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, pineapple, apricot, and tangerine. Earthy and floral hop presence with notes of pine resin and grass. Good background of malt with sweet notes of caramel, biscuit, cracker, grains, and yeast. Pretty hop forward and nicely bitter. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy and fairly oily with a drying finish.

Overall: A very good West Coast style IPA. Big tropical citrus flavor with some nice pine and malt notes.

Wonderful IPA from Kona in Hawaii. Glad to see some quality craft brew there. Pours a clear copper colour, pillowy white head, good retention. Hoppy aroma, fruity, sweet and pleasant. In addition to the hops, it has quite a nice malt character. Sweet caramel. Overall, a wonderful IPA with a tonne of flavour.

Had this on tap at the Kona brewpub in Koko Marina, Oahu.

Real creamy head but lacking in lacing. Typical dark amber color for an IPA.

Excellent fresh hop nose, something that I always am looking for!

The hops really come through in the bitterness but almost no aftertaste. Smallish citrus and nice malty balance.

A real clean feel.

Overall, a really good IPA.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 6 %. It also has a freshness date and a short description of the beer.

Appearance: The body is cloudy and has a light golden color. It’s head was small and settles quickly. It keeps just a wispy thin film with a ring of creamy bubbles at the edge of the glass.

Smell: There is a nice hop character in the nose. It brings notes of citrusy grapefruit and tropical pineapple to the nose.

Taste / Palate: The flavor is medium bodied with nice juicy hop flavor though out. It has very nice light bready malt sweetness backing up the citrusy and tropical fruity hop flavors. It finishes with just a quick flash of very mild hop bitterness. It feel light, but not thin and it is very drinkable.

Notes: If you’re a hard core hop head this may not be for you but I love the balance and drinkability in this beer. This may also be a good IPA for craft beer newbies or people who like hop flavor with out heavy enamel stripping bitterness.

Pours a slightly cloudy golden, amber color with a nice 2 finger head in a 20oz pub glass leaving lacing down the glass as it dissipates.

Smell is really nice. The hop, piney smell is really there up front. In the background I get some malts.

Taste is really good. I get the hops upfront, then it is balanced nicely with the sweetness of the malts.

Mouthfeel is really full of carbonation that feels really nice.

Overall, a really nice IPA. The hops are in no short supply. The pineyness is really strong but the sweet malts balance it nice. Another solid brew from Kona Brewing Company.
