Notes/Commercial Description:
A full-bodied, American-Style I.P.A. that is bronze in color, Castaway IPA is "dry hopped" (aged with liberal amounts of whole hop flowers after fermentation) for assertive hop flavor and aroma. The bitterness is balanced by the malty body of the beer.

This pours a bright 14K gold with a 1 finger head of foam that lasts and lasts.

The smell is loaded with grassy hops, some pine and citrus, with just a hint of some kind of sweetness from the malt.

The taste is a bit more balanced; grass is big and bold, milder citrus and pine, underlining malt throughout gives it a somewhat sweet and earthy note. It's pleasing to my palate.

Nice smooth mouthfeel and overall, a very easy drinking, solid IPA.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle marked 15:26-3-APR2514. Sampled on May 23, 2014.

The pour is mostly golden with a big, fluffy white head that fades slowly and leaves a coating of lacing clinging to the glass.

The aroma has a variety of characteristics including toasted grain, light caramel malts, pine, resin, and grapefruit. Smells like a well developed IPA.

Light to medium body but it does not hold up well as it breaks down to carbonation bubbles quickly.

Mild to moderately sweet flavor overall with an emphasis on the toasted grains and the pine bitterness hailing me from the rear. Quite easy to drink.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a muddled amber color. The head is around a finger high, and white in shade. I'm not too impressed with the retention, but at least it leaves a thin ring of lacing on the glass.

S: This seems to be quite herbaceous, more than the standard IPA. There's also a fair bit of mint, a feature only in a small handful of IPAs (Dogfish Head's IPAs come to mind). If I really concentrate, I can pick up a few tropical fruit notes here and there. Malts are just prevalent enough as well. A solid aroma, but one that doesn't set the world on fire.

T: The flavor profile is much the same way, but one difference is how earthy the taste comes across. There's a vague hint of tropical fruit to start (in my opinion, this facet needs to be jumped up a few notches), and a healthy minty-yet-herbal finish. The malts are well intertwined with the hop flavor/bitterness. It's relatively sweet, but since it doesn't overly rely on crystal malt, the sweetness level doesn't annoy me. I could always use more hop flavor; whatever, I'll deal.

M: Crisp yet just sweet enough. When I say "just sweet enough", I mean it's not bone dry, it's not ridiculously sugary, it has enough malt to make it refreshing. This would be panacea if I were sweating in 100 degree heat. My only complaint is that it seems a bit full-bodied for a 6% IPA. Carbonation is middling.

O: This is a solid hot weather IPA. Rather than impressing with its flavor profile, it focuses on being refreshing - and it certainly is that. If it had a "bigger" flavor, it would become great. Or maybe it just needs to be in cans. Seriously, this one would be so good in cans.
