I'm very happy to add this beer to BA, as it is Banks Brewery's latest and greatest offering for the Bajan people, and for all us visitors to Barbados.
Labeled a "strong lager", Seven "7" fits in the market here:
It's strong, you don't have to drink as much of it as Banks' regular lager, and... it offers variety to a beer-starved nation.
So ... that's about it for the positives.
Pouring like a typical lager except for a copper appearance, it's still got a golden hue and it is most definitely pasteurized. 7 smells like alcohol and malt. Weird malt. Sugar's there for sure as an adjunct, similar to the regular brew, and it almost takes on a rum smell - just a bottom shelf rum, because it's not pleasant. Nothing really stands out.
The taste follows suit, with the front middle and back going thusly: water, water, alcohol and malt that presents itself at the absolute base of the tongue. Whatever hops are there get swallowed by the alcohol, and it's like burnt caramel that went terribly wrong. Almost a sour note to the malt, it's just too much heat. When you're used to drinking beers of 10% and above regularly, and never feeling the heat, getting so much out of a 7.0% alcohol beer is just not pleasant. The body does exhibit solid carbonation, and the body is decent enough to say that it feels OK going down - if you were just paying attention to the feel of it - not the taste.
This could work for some though. There isn't a belgian strong ale on the market in Barbados. And plus, Four Loko works for people, so I suppose anything can. But as for me... I'm staying away.
Then again, it's not like I'll have the chance again any time soon, because it's only available in Barbados, as far as I know.
