Our flagship Pale Ale is a smooth, balanced, copper-colored session beer with mildly spiced flavor and aroma from the East Kent Goldings hops. The bready, lightly caramel malt complements the hint of fruitiness contributed by the London Ale yeast, making it satisfying and authentic; the perfect flagship beer for Schlafly.

Sixteenth century brewers created amber beers by using a form of coal called coke to roast their grains. Coke burns hotter and more steadily than wood without imparting the foul odors from coal. It allowed brewers to produce caramel malts that were paler alternatives to the common brown porters. At about the same time, Flemish migrants introduced hops to English beers and soon this ale became the chosen style of England from the mid-16th century until the end of the 20th century. Today, brewers outside England have adopted the Pale Ale and made it one of the leading styles of the American craft beer movement.

Appearance:
Crystal Amber. 1/4 inch of head. Sheet lacing dissipates quickly.

Aroma:
Malt. Caramel. Peach. Pecan

Taste:
Peaches. Pecan. Deliciousness. Faintest sweetness. Dinner rolls. Very mild bitterness afterthought.

Mouthfeel:
So drinkable. Crisp. Clean. Perfectly carbonated for pub slamming style. Or just enjoying a highly quaffable brew.

Overall:
Winner!!! Tastes like the ultimate classic that I’d idealize having in an English pub. So good for this style. Yes. Drink it.

12oz bottled 11/03/22 (8 months ago) poured into a shaker pint glass at fridge temp 4.4% ABV per label. The beer pours slightly hazy in a burnt copper color with khaki head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. The aroma is mild with toasted malt. The taste is semisweet toasted malt with a slight tangy edge and hop flavor resembling black tea. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with just less that average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good. This bottle is surely impacted by it's age, but when do you find an honest English style pale ale? Would definitely drink fresh or on tap.

12 oz. bottle, bottled 05/11/2022. A new one to me from Schlafly, acquired a single bottle as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's. Been a while since I've had a new beer from Schlafly, and also a while since I've had an English style pale ale, which the label says this beer is. Let's see what we've got.

Poured to a Piraat snifter.

A - Oo yes, looks very befitting of the style. Nice copper amber orange body, some clarity, some carbonation present, and a finger of khaki head that falls to a surface skimming rather quick. Lots of good lacing left on the glass. Looks very nice.

S - Aroma is creamy & fruity - some peaches and mixed berries present, mixed with notes of mineral / well water, and brown bread crusts.

T - Smooth, crisp, creamy, & bready. A perfect combination between the East Kent Goldings hops and the Londan Ale yeast. Very good depth of flavor for such a low alcohol beer.

M - Feel is smooth, crisp, creamy, good heft to the body for the modest abv.

Overall, I'm confident to give this one 4's across the board, although I don't see this being a "flagship" beer for Schlafly given the style. Excellent stuff, would recommend.

12 oz bottle into clear plastic cup

Clear amber in color, thick qhite head. Good head retention. Mild caramel malt and mild fruity hop aroma. Balanced taste, not too sweet nor bitter. Medium bodied.

Road trip finally took me through Schlafly's distro area, so I found a bottle shop...only option was the English pale, so got a sixer. This one’s at the hotel, into a tall shaker-like glass. Looks fine, fairly clear copper with a decent 1 finger eggshell head, not much retention. Nose is nice sourdough toast and a lot of caramel malts, some herbal hops, but the nose is mainly malts. Taste brings all the nose’s potential out much more fully with more depth and also some orange marmalade and fruity herbal notes. Tea-like at moments, with a little herbal spicey kick. Carb is middling to low, body is moderate, neither heavy nor thin. Finish doesn’t come to too much of a point...kind of just meanders a little, though not unpleasantly. (Had two of these, one quite cold and the other a little warmer...last one was better. I bet this would be best at on cask.) This does some justice to the English dimensions of what a pale ale can be, and I enjoyed it most on that count.

16oz can into a pint glass. Canned 6/25/19, so almost 18 months old. Ouch.

Looks really good though. Faintly hazy copper colored body. Small bright white head persists in good form throughout leaving nice lacing. Good streams of carbonation.

Smells a little cheesy. Uh oh.

Well, this is an eye opener. It tastes really nice. Malty forward, with a little taste of the goldings hops later in the drink. No bitterness at all of course, given the age. A very light pepper touch.

Mouth medium, finish a clean maltiness with the lightest of spice.

Overall, after being nervous about the age and the aroma, this was a really enjoyable English style pale ale, and from the first mouthful I was transported back to the olde countrye. Really have to try this fresh, but it holds up extremely well in the can.

Such a wonderful change of pace pale ale. Appearance is wonderful clear orange/brown with a big fluffy head. Sweet and really grainy and malty. Really enjoyed this quite a lot. Bursting with flavor and richness.

Pours a clear bronze color with visible carbonation. A moderate head displays good retention. A good look.

The aroma opens quite fruity and floral; hard to tell if it’s yeast or hops derived. Notes of tangerine and grapefruit in particular, as well as a touch of grass. The Malt aroma is toasty and biscuity with a touch of caramel and toffee.

In contrast to the sweet aromatics, the taste opens with a firm bitterness and with earthy, spicy and piny hops flavors. As the drink warms, the fullness and sweetness of the malts opens up, with flavors of bready, toasted, biscuit and caramel/toffee. Flavors of fruity esters also become unlocked, with notes of citrus. However, all throughout, the bitterness keeps everything balanced.

Medium to full bodied with a crisp mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. A relatively long finish is dry and aids drinkability.

Very nice English Pale Ale. Well balanced with some nice flavors and interplay between sweetness and bitterness. I would definitely have this again.
