Belgian Strong Pale Ale |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Grand Cru rewards like dry champagne with aromas of passion fruit and exotic spice. This rich, golden-colored ale is fermented with a distinct Belgian abbey ale strain, then bottle conditioned with extra sugar and yeast for at least two weeks. Bottle conditioning creates the effervescent mouth feel, as well as the distinct Belgian lace prized in Belgian beers. Enjoy the complexity imparted by technique and craft.

Cru is a French wine term which means “growth place” or “great growth”. Brewers in Europe, notably in Belgium, and America use the designation to refer to a beer that is created to showcase the brewer’s art and to represent their passion for their brewery.

Another Saturday afternoon beer at the taproom. Pours orange- gold with white head. Smells like all kinds of fruity citrusy things. Taste is of multiple different candied things, with bubble- gum most recognizable. Keeps evolving, but not as long as other belgian styles I've had. Smooth and slick in the mouth. Hides the ABV a little too well, so easy to drink.

Schlafly Grand Cru from a capped & silkscreened bomber --> pint glass.

A - Pours clear bright amber. Very pretty two-finger head. Nice meringue color and texture. Excellent lacing and sticking.

S - Pepper, mediciney phenols, yeast, lemon rind.

T - Lots more mediciney phenol taste. A little bit of candi sugary sweetness. Some pepper and spice, and a bit of alcohol warming. Aftertaste is of more phenols and a bit of sourness.

M - Crisp, good carbonation. A bit slick in the aftertaste, I don't really care for that..

D - Not quite my cup of tea as far as Belgian pale ales.. I think a bit more sweetness and a bit less sourness would go a long way for this beer.. Its okay for style, but not quite to my liking.

Large bottle, caged and corked, w/o freshness info. Pours slightly cloudy, apricot amber, the light tan head is quite long lasting and leaves nice fine lace/sheeting areas. Nose is full of fruit, a hint of pepper, and yeast. Flavorful brew with plenty of Belggian character and interest. More tropical fruit, pepper, warming alcohol and a yeast infused early finish and drying hop ending. Nice Schlafly brew

Poured into a Brooklyn Brewery Tulip.

A- Pours a clear, golden color. Single finger head that disipates quickly.

S- Smells slightly sweet with some citrus notes. Mild alcohol presence if you get your nose into it.

T- taste is as the nose suggests. A little on the sweet side with citrus and spice notes. And then it fades. This beer leaves little flavor on the tongue, just kinda disappears.

M- little alchohol presence. medium body with a good amount of carbonation.

O- A rather solid brew. Also, my first from Schlafly. Would definitely buy this again.

A- pours a golden amber color with a thick, white frothy head. lots of carbonation. good looking beer.

S- brown sugar, figs, floral & malty with a hint of lemon

T- dry effervescence on the front that gives way to banana, biscuit & lemons on the end. I like the hint of burn that sits on the back of the throat

M- medium body that is dry and heavily carbonated

D- really enjoyed the crisp dry taste. not the type of beer you could drink all evening but a really nice sipper on this January nite

A: Light orange/golden hue with a beautiful head and intricate lacing

S: Something a bit funky; orange peel; the yeastiness is prevalent; sour smelling

T: Grainy and sour; yeasty; citrus--especially the peel of an orange and lemon; there is a graininess that is also evident

F: Crisp with a fairly even mouth coat

D: Pretty good, drinkable beer although there's something slightly funky that's a bit wearing

Got this a month or so ago..

Pours an effervescent amber with 1 finger of tightly packed cream colored head. Very good head retention & lacing

S: Tropical fruit, candi sugar & a touch of lemon

T: Tart, tart appleskins, dryness & candi sugar up front, plus a touch of lemony hops. Dryness, boozey apple cider & green bananas are all on parade as this warms. Finishes warm with way too much green banana, plus a bit of passion fruit. This a bit too far off style to me

MF: Medium bodied, slightly sticky & still assertively carbonated

This one is a bit ponderous to drink, but a nice puckery one to challenge the taste buds, but not a good Belgian PA IMHO

Presentation: Poured from a 750 ml brown bottle into a Rockmill Brewery chalice. Label is painted on and is a variation of a fleur-de-lis, as are the others in this series. Picked this up along with a dubel and tripel on a trip down south.

Appearance: Pours with 1 1/2 fingers of nearly white head. This settles slowly to a still substantial cap of foam leaving behind amazing lacing. the beer itself is the color of honey with an amazing amount of activity. Some floaties, but I take the blame for that. The bottle was jostled last night and didn't get enough time to settle.

Smell: Fruity aroma upfront, reminiscent of honey and berries. Slightly sweet malt with caramel undertones and a hint of husky graininess.

Taste: Semi sweet mild caramel malt upfront with hints of pine and a light medicinal finish. Slight tangy sourness in the finish. Alcohol is hidden well.

Mouthfeel: Tons of carbonation burst into a mouthfilling cascade of bubbles with each sip. Body is very good.

Drinkability: An above average looker, but just average on taste. For a beer called "Grand Cru" I expect a little more oomph or pizzazz. Not bad at all, but not as flavorful as I would have liked.

750 ml bottle. Served in a tulip glass, the beer pours a dark golden orange color with about an inch off-white head. Head retention is excellent with good lacing. Aroma is light, it smells like bready malt, peppery spice, tropical fruit and apples. The taste is stronger than the aroma, there's tropical fruit, apples, pepper, grapes and some caramel all noticable. Fruit taste is both tart and sweet. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy and is well carbonated. Drinkability is good, it's smooth and easy to drink. Also, the 9% ABV is pretty well hidden. Schlalfy has done a good job with this brew, I'd buy this again in the future.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderate hand. Sticker on the bottom reads, Brewed with love 1 3013.

A: Cloudy, golden yellow body with 1.5 fingers of thick, white head. Good retention. Scant lacing.

S: Fruity, slightly musty Belgian yeast. Pear, apple juice, pineapple. Straw, faint grass. Some booze. Actually rather bourbon-like with some oak and vanilla notes. Really opens up as it warms. Some lemon. Black pepper. Indistinct herbs.

T: Bold, yeasty spice up front with semi-sweet, fruity undertones. Faint tang. Mild european hop bitterness develops. Fairly dry finish. Alcohol presence is moderate for 9% ABV, but brings a bit of bourbon to the party.

M: Moderate carbonation with a light creaminess. Moderately full body.

O: Tasty brew with an impressively complex and dynamic nose. I wish a bit more came across on the palate, but I couldn't stop sniffing this one. Something different each time I went to the well.

Prost!

Big 750 received in Fight Club Round 2 from Czoch75... Clint put the beatdown on me with 2 massive boxes... this is one that I've been meaning to get too for a long time... Poured into my Delirium goblet.

2 finger foamy white head leaves behind tons of splotch lace... the brew is a crystal clear lite honey.

Fruity esters remind me of apricot... but pear and soft apple are the main players.. floral qualities could be coming from hops, but I'm not really sure. lite peppery phenols.

Flavor mirrors the nose but significantly more pronounced.. a little larger than medium body with bunches of prickly carbonation... finish is long with some residual sweetness and pear essence.

Pretty damn good beer.... Maybe not as complex as the bigger guns in the style... but very well done and I really like it... Thanks again Clint... We must do it again sometime.

A: The beer is very hazy yellowish amber in color. It poured with a half finger high off white head that died down but never completely faded away, consistently leaving a thin head covering the surface.
S: There are aromas of sweet malts in the nose along with some hints of apples and caramel.
T: The taste has flavors of malty sweetness with notes of fruit along with a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. No dryness is perceptible.
O: This beer seems quite malty for the style and lacks the dryness associated with many of the other beers in the style. The alcohol is well masked from the taste.

On tap in a pint glass. Mildly hazy gold to copper color with a good sized tan head that settles to a sheet of lace. Nose has citrus grapefruit and orange with mild spice coriander. Light caramel finish, with a bit of pepper. Taste has the citrus and a pronounced sweetness, hard candy. The orange citrus is there along with the mild spice. Slick mouth feel, medium drinkability. This beer is a little to conservative, a Grand Cur (in my opinion) has the opportunity to go over the top, and this beer, while solid, doesn’t get there.
