Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Grand Cru rewards like dry champagne with aromas of passion fruit and exotic spice. This rich, golden-colored ale is fermented with a distinct Belgian abbey ale strain, then bottle conditioned with extra sugar and yeast for at least two weeks. Bottle conditioning creates the effervescent mouth feel, as well as the distinct Belgian lace prized in Belgian beers. Enjoy the complexity imparted by technique and craft.

Cru is a French wine term which means “growth place” or “great growth”. Brewers in Europe, notably in Belgium, and America use the designation to refer to a beer that is created to showcase the brewer’s art and to represent their passion for their brewery.

Notes of pear, lemon, and clove form the aroma. Flavor is sweet, with soft notes of pear and apple adding complexity. The finish is lightly dry and bready, with a touch of white pepper. A little too sweet/bland after the tripel.

Poured a clear golden body (maybe reddish tints) with fizzy head from lively carbonation that dies quick and minimal lacing. Aroma has yeast, spice, and touches of tropical fruit and sugar. I find the beer smooth from the yeast yet finishes sharp due to the carbonation. The beer is spicy and slightly sweet (candi-sugar and fruity) with a variety of fruit flavors from minor citric hops to bits of grape skin and sour apple to possible tropical fruit sweetness. A good ale but just not my favorite as it seems offbalance at times as I get a hodgepodge of different flavors at different times.

A: Pours a cloudy golden orange with an imposing white head.

S: Aromas of champagne, minerals, biscuits, crackers, caramel, spices, herbs, grass, and lemon fill the nose.

T: Notes of champagne, minerals, caramel, biscuit, crackers, spices, lemon, grass, mild herbs, lime zest, green apple, unripened pear, lychee, and prickly alcohol swirl across the palate. The finish is fruity and sweet with a pleasant mixture of mild citrus, orchard fruits, spices, and ultimately, peppery alcohol.

M: Very light in body and slightly sticky as well. Carbonation is firm and prickly. Alcohol is rather pronounced, yet this ale is still very sippable.

O: A very good Belgian-style ale. Definitely worth the time for those who run across it.
