Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Coffee Stout is a classic combination of a traditional stout and premium French roast coffee from St. Louis roaster, Kaldi’s Coffee. Roasted barley and coffee dominate the aroma, with the sweetness from the stout balancing the acidity of the coffee. We use a unique cold toddy extraction process to brew a less acidic coffee for the beer.

In the 1990’s, Kaldi’s staff started visiting the Schlafly Tap Room, asking for a pint of stout and a shot of espresso. Both Schlafly and Kaldi’s realized this was a match made in beer heaven, and soon started working together to find the perfect coffee blend to mix with our Oatmeal Stout. This collaboration continues today, with regular tastings to perfect the Coffee Stout.

The beer pour a light brownish and creamy head that dissipates quickly but still leaves some film on the beer. The beer is a dark brown color that almost appears like a dark black that resembles coffee. As expected, the beer is opaque. The beer has a very strong coffee smell and dominates the other smells. However, the other smells such as the hint of oatmeal and roasted malts compliment the beer instead of detracting from it. The taste does not quite live up to the expectation of the smell but still works well. Coffee is the dominant flavor and slight complemented by the oatmeal and roasted malts. The beer feels surprisingly light for a heavy bodied beer with biting carbonation. The beer itself feels smooth as it goes down. Overall, a pretty decent coffee stout and worth getting again.

Pours black color with some mahogany at the edges when held up to light and 1 finger creamy/foamy light tan head that faded slowly as big craters formed and dropped in the head, leaving very good foamy lacing with rings as it went down.

Smells of very acidic coffee up front which is like a Starbucks sitting on your desk all day; the aroma is a combo of smoked grains, coffee, molasses, cocoa powder, herbs, burnt wood and caramel – the smoky notes play well with the coffee and malts, and to me it smells really nice. This is listed under Oatmeal Stout in BA, but the oatmeal is nowhere to be found in the nose.

Tastes like it smells in general, but with more complexity – the very acidic coffee up front, check; cold Starbucks, check; then the rest of the flavors including coffee, smoked grains, molasses, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, herbs, burnt wood, caramel, light citrus hops like a hint of lemon, oats or wheat bread, and faint vanilla. It is quite bitter and the burnt flavor reminds me of a coffee pot left on way too long, but somehow it was enjoyable in the form of a beer. The bitterness and smoky grains/malts somehow worked well with the coffee and hops added, and this got better as it warmed with more flavor showing through.

Mouthfeel was thin and almost watery for a stout, with very light carbonation, a light body and a bitter finish that trailed off smoky and full of coffee and cocoa flavors that also had a tea leaf/herbal quality to it.

Overall I liked this beer and enjoyed the complexities of the roasted coffee and bitter flavors; I love coffee so I’m always slightly biased on my enjoyment and rating of this type of beer, so I would recommend this brew since the coffee flavors were very tasty to me.

Deeply dark but not entirely black this stout was quite fetching with its stiffly built head and thick core.

The aroma is a bit too subtle with roasted coffee, dry chocolate and malt.

The scent was a touch quiet but the taste is not so subtle. Big roasted flavor, robust coffee taste, oddly earthy peppers and dry grain malt all hit the palate with a shout. There's no mention of habenero or any other pepper but I get a nice little kick on the tongue and then the roasted coffee rushes through for a nicely satisfying finish. There's even a bit of chocolate.

This is a touch unorthodox, with the earthy pepper flavor, chocolate and coffee but it is quite good.
