Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Coffee Stout is a classic combination of a traditional stout and premium French roast coffee from St. Louis roaster, Kaldi’s Coffee. Roasted barley and coffee dominate the aroma, with the sweetness from the stout balancing the acidity of the coffee. We use a unique cold toddy extraction process to brew a less acidic coffee for the beer.

In the 1990’s, Kaldi’s staff started visiting the Schlafly Tap Room, asking for a pint of stout and a shot of espresso. Both Schlafly and Kaldi’s realized this was a match made in beer heaven, and soon started working together to find the perfect coffee blend to mix with our Oatmeal Stout. This collaboration continues today, with regular tastings to perfect the Coffee Stout.

Deeply dark but not entirely black this stout was quite fetching with its stiffly built head and thick core.

The aroma is a bit too subtle with roasted coffee, dry chocolate and malt.

The scent was a touch quiet but the taste is not so subtle. Big roasted flavor, robust coffee taste, oddly earthy peppers and dry grain malt all hit the palate with a shout. There's no mention of habenero or any other pepper but I get a nice little kick on the tongue and then the roasted coffee rushes through for a nicely satisfying finish. There's even a bit of chocolate.

This is a touch unorthodox, with the earthy pepper flavor, chocolate and coffee but it is quite good.

Bottled 26 November 2012. Tasted 2 May 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours dark brown, effectively black, with color only at the edges. One finger of medium-light tan head. Okay retention and lacing.

Smell is soft, almost watered-down, coffee. It has a milky artificial-feeling sweetness, much like some of the big sweet Southern Tier stouts. Like over-sugared weak coffee, though pretty good for that realm, and with more positive than negative.

Taste is a blend of gentle stout and soft coffee flavors. Both sides are restrained, a little more than I'd like them to be, but they add up to a nice whole.

Mouthfeel is light, with a slickness like a milk stout. Medium-low carbonation that fades out pretty early; I want it to be more persistent. Fades out into that slickness.

Finding this, well, not exactly mediocre, but uninspiring. Has a funny sweetness that reminds me a lot of beers like Southern Tier Mokah and Creme Brulee. Also has some distinct milk stout characteristics, which I wasn't expecting.
