A: Dark brown, nice tan head, dissapates quicker than it should have.

S: Chocolate, citrus. Maybe nutmeg?

T: Malty with a nice touch or slightly bitter chocolate. Some citrus, ginger (?) maybe orange coming out. Tough to tell, but, damned good.

M: Overall a medium body porter. Not overwhelming with "spice", but, it's there.

D: I easily downed 2 pints prior to a wonderful fried cod dinner. One with it, and one after it. Very, very easy to drink. I didn't care for the Porter last time I had a year or 2 ago, seemed too thin, and uninviting. This was all there. Nice job!

Picked up this growler at the Taproom while I was spending a weekend in St Louis visiting friends. I hear they brewed this one for the Presidential Inauguration party.

From the growler, poured into a shaker pint glass. Light mocha colored head. Thin ring of lace circles the surface. Color is a dark chocolate brown with garnet highlights when held to the light.

Smell has a strong cocoa powder with a slight hint of coriander. Taste has a solid cocoa body, but the spices are interesting and complement. There is some coriander and parsley. A little bit of nutmeg and ginger. The greenness of the spices really compliment the sweetness of the chocolate.

Mouthfeel is not overly heavy, but does have a creamy texture. At the Taproom I had this with the fish and chips, a perfect combo.

Pours a deep, rich brown with reddish hues and possesses a nice tall, light brown head that sticks around. The nose is of roasted malts, some nuttiness, and floral/citrus hops. Not a lot in the spice category though. Palate is good, but where's the spice? Rich roasted malts, slight coffee notes, citrus and a pleasant sweetness. Not a dry porter, for sure. Finish is slightly more dry, with a decent hop bitterness going on. Mouthfeel is smooth and medium, I'd say. A good porter, for sure, and definitely takes the style in a unique direction. If anything, could have been a bit more generously spiced, as the spice notes are almost undetectable. Otherwise, this is a very nice, drinkable porter. I liked it.

Well, this was much better than the regular porter, but still lacking real character in the taste.

Pour was decent, blackish but with a nominal tan head that died just a bit too quick. Aroma – damn, nothing that stood out, again just some malty notes. The quaff did have some body and breadth this time, respectable malts with a coriander pop. Even had some pumpkin and cinnamon notes – maybe they used the pumpkin ale vat and didn’t clean it well enough.

Still missing a powdery texture and sour ale burst, but I would give this one a go again.

Quick little pint stop after some errands.... so worth it.

Pours a nice dark, but not yet black color. Smell is with a light hand on the hops, and a bit of chocolatey- ness. Tastes really nice- this has a wonderful chocolate/ coffee/ roast balance that's just perfect. Really very well balanced. The spices are a little hard to trace- I can tell there's something there, but it's real subtle- I dunnow, nutmeg/ cinnamon/ corriander? Heck if I can tell. All I know is it was damn tasty. Also feels nice and full in the mouth. Far too drinkable a beer, especially at the slightly higher ABV. This one's a growler fill for sure.

I had the opportunity to sample this beer a few weeks ago when the brewer Joseph was transferring it to kegs. He made this beer for his wedding coming up in a couple of months, and it does not use the base Schlafly Porter. It pours a dark brown, reasonably clear with a great fluffy tan head that recedes pretty quickly. Joseph admitted to me that he likely under spiced the beer,, and that is evident in the nose. There is citrus orange in front, and then some layers of milk chocolate and espresso. I know he used some coriander, but I could not detect any in the aroma. The taste has a mild bitterness, accentuated by the orange peel. It has more of the milk chocolate, but the espresso doesn’t show in the flavor. It’s replace by more of dark caramel flavor. Great mouth feel, smooth and rich. This is a really nice beer. I don’t care what happened to the spice, this is a much better porter than their annual beer. Nice job Joseph, and congratulations.
