Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Pumpkin Ale blends the spices of the harvest with full-bodied sweetness for a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. Pounds of pumpkin form a malty foundation that supports the fall flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

While pumpkin beers were produced in the early days of the American colonies, they were different from the pumpkin beers we know today. Colonists used pumpkin and squash as the fermenting medium, since malted barley was scarce. Once malt became more readily available, it replaced these alternatives to grain. In the 1990’s, American craft brewers reintroduced the style to the delight of pumpkin beer drinkers.

A: Great deep hazy orange color with a thick off white head. Looks tasty.

S: Smells of clove, cinnamon, and canned pumpkin. Smells great but it has me worried with the canned pumpkin scent.

T: Yep, tastes pretty fake. Reminds me of pumpkin pie with lots of clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and various other spices. The spices round off the cloying canned pumpkin flavor enough to make it pretty good.

M: Creamy and smooth, the alcohol is hidden almost completely. Well carbonated as well.

O: This is the best of the "fake" pumpkin ales I've had. It doesn't come near brews made with real pumpkin, the cloying sweetness really holds it back. The heavy spices are completely necessary to cover up the sweetness. I'd drink it again for sure, but wont be seeking it out.

Draft at the Pour House in Westmont, NJ.

Pours a hazy and very dark golden orange color that's almost brown with dark burnt orange edges and a one finger beige head that quickly settles into a thin ring.  Steaks of lace left behind.

Sweet pumpkin pie aroma with a decent balance of pumpkin purée and autumnal spices.  Pumpkin seed, pie filling, nutmeg and vanilla along with cinnamon and brown sugar.  Subtle vegetal quality but more dessert like than earthy.

Medium body with a strong zesty autumnal spice presence that dominates up frot lingering over the sweet malts before a sweet pumpkin pie/dessert presence shows up in the finish. Peppery with ginger, clove and cinnamon followed by caramel malt, pumpkin purée, vanilla and nutmeg.  Interesting how the flavor profile changes mid palate.  Still tons of spice but more dessert like in the finish.  Only a subtle vegetal presnce but it makes it a bit more organic tasting than a pure dessert beer.  Nice balance of both approaches to the style.  Decently balanced but could be a touch sweeter.

This is a quality pumpkin beer! lots of spices going on here. This is one of the best pumpkin beers I have ever had. Just a quality, seasonal beer that matches perfect with the incoming Northeastern weather. I am sure some could argue that the beer has a little to much spice, but for me and every person I shared this beer with its a top notch brew. The only other pumpkin beer I like better is Fegleys Devious.

Bottom Line: great pumpkin brew!

The 2013 version of this brew falls slightly short. Scores edited, original was 4.4
