Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Pumpkin Ale blends the spices of the harvest with full-bodied sweetness for a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. Pounds of pumpkin form a malty foundation that supports the fall flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

While pumpkin beers were produced in the early days of the American colonies, they were different from the pumpkin beers we know today. Colonists used pumpkin and squash as the fermenting medium, since malted barley was scarce. Once malt became more readily available, it replaced these alternatives to grain. In the 1990’s, American craft brewers reintroduced the style to the delight of pumpkin beer drinkers.

12 oz bottle served in a snifter.

Pours clear, dark amber color with a modest tan head. A small amount of sediment lurking at the bottom of the bottle was added to the pour.

Despite plenty of pie spices, the pumpkin shines thru as well. More spicy in the flavor and feel than in the nose, particular the cinnamon component. Perhaps due to a richer malt base, even with rather bold spicing this pumpkin is not over-spiced. Those not liking cinnamon probably will disagree; this has enough cinnamon to, I think, add a slight burn to the feel. Still, very nice mix of flavors.

O: very similar to the Whole Hog Pumpkin I had a couple of days ago in both profile and overall quality. These are among the best pumpkins I've tried, and clearly the best of the 5 I've had over the past 3 days. More clove in the Schlafly; slight preference for the Whole Hog.

Bottled with love on 8/14/13.
Aroma is more spice than pumpkin. Sometimes heavy on nutmeg and other times cinnamon. Some roasted pumpkin in the background.
Darker orange pushing to browns in the amber. Tan head that is smallish, but hangs around pretty well.
Roasted pumpkin really shows in the taste. Still containing ample spice and a firm shot of alcohol adds a bite (and a quick shot of warmth to the wheelhouse). Not much more complicated than that. Just all those flavors rolling around for an enjoyable experience.
Moderate to a little thinner on the feel. Carbonated well but not to excess.
This is a nice seasonal ale. Going with the current trend of higher abv, which seems to work well.
