Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: maxpower on 09-16-2006

Our Pumpkin Ale blends the spices of the harvest with full-bodied sweetness for a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. Pounds of pumpkin form a malty foundation that supports the fall flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

While pumpkin beers were produced in the early days of the American colonies, they were different from the pumpkin beers we know today. Colonists used pumpkin and squash as the fermenting medium, since malted barley was scarce. Once malt became more readily available, it replaced these alternatives to grain. In the 1990’s, American craft brewers reintroduced the style to the delight of pumpkin beer drinkers.

A- Pours a copperish red with one finger a slightly off whiter head and better than average retention

S - Wonderful aromas of pumpkin pie. You can definately etect the nutmeg and cinnamon. The pumpkin is nicely balanced with the spices. Well done

T - Mmmm. Taste just like a pumpkin pie. Great use of pumpkin and spices. Very well put together. Again, like the aroma, nutmeg and cinnamon are prevelant and nicely balanced with the pumpkin. The is also a good pumpkin kick ont he finish

M - A cramy beer just the way a pumpkin ale should be in my opinoin. Also has a slight arming effect from the higher ABV I assume. Great mouthfeel.

O - Love this beer. One of the best pumpkin ales out there. Great use of pumpkin. Not too much but enough for you to know that its there. Like the higher abv of this beer also. Great fall beer. Might have to track down some more of this for Thanksgiving!

Poured into a snifter. Thanks, Roy!

A: Opaque amber. Not much head; little bubbles that grin up like a jack o lantern.

S: Nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin, sugar, molasses.

T: Full bodied, sweet, rich, pumpkin pie, nutmeg, clove. Smooth and rich. Very rewarding. The 8% sneaks in for a nice treat.

M: Medium with light carbonation.

O: This one had been recommended and now I see why. One of the better pumpkin ales out there. The robustness of Schlafly's pumpkin ale makes it a winner. The flavors stand up like a defensive line and knocks you on your ass like a pumpkin upside the head. I'll be drinking more of this one.

Pours a very dark amber color with a short dense cream colored head that settles into a light ring. Very autumn looking.

Big bold pumpkin and pumpkin pie aromas. Spicy but not overly so. Cinnamon and nutmeg standout with a lesser extent of allspice and perhaps clove. There is a slight buttery note that reminds me of a pie crust. There is also a steely caramel undercurrent that continues the sweetness. It doesn't outwardly smell like a pumpkin pie, like Dogfishhead, probably due to the actual pumpkin that has been added. Quite complex but a little too sweet.

Nice subtle vegetal pumpkin flavor which seems to add some heft to the brew. Perfect blend of spice, mainly cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. The ginger gives the beer a needed brightness. A deep caramel sweetness gives the beer some depth. A nice bready malt sits in the back.

The feel is substantial; the beer has some body to it. A bit on the sweet side, drinks heavy. A light lemon dryness in the finish.

A very good pumpkin beer and rates up there with Dogfishhead for me. It is a bit more muddled than Punkin and not quite as refreshing but this beer hits all of the proper flavor notes. A must try for the style.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a deep amber hue with a two finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a rindy pumpkin flesh and light spice.

The taste consisted of sweet caramel, pumpkin flesh and a light spice.

The mouthfeel was full for the style.

Overall a tasty full bodied pumpkin ale.

I read all the hype and went on a manhunt to find this beer. Finally came across a 6 pack. Date on bottle is 9/3/2013, so a fairly fresh brew. Poured into curvy pint glass.

Appearance- pours a very clear dark amber. Off white 1/2 finger head dissipates quickly.

Smell- heavy spices, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, pumpkin aroma up front.

Taste- spices are heavy up front, the pumpkin is somewhere behind it all. Not what i was expecting. Taste is more of an octoberfest beer.

Mouthfeel- the pumpkin shows itself a bit more in the finish. Creamy with a decent amount of alcohol.

Overall- this is a decent pumpkin beer, far from great in my opinion. After reading the hype I was unpleasantly surprised. I hope that I got a bad batch and next time i'll give it another go.

Pours a honey brown with a small off-white head. Poor retention and no legs to speak of. Nose redolent of spice, especially clove and cinnamon. Just a hint of pumpkin detected. The best way to describe the taste is to compare it to warm pumpkin pie. The pumpkin that was almost undetectable in the nose come through beautifully on the palate, balancing the spice perfectly. Some alcohol warming. Finishes slightly sweet. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Overall, a very smooth and well crafted pumpkin ale.

12 oz single bottle purchased from Half Time in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Pours a bloody orange into my Lagunitas mason jar.

Smells like pure pumpkin pie.

The taste follows- cinnamon, toffee, brown sugar, actual pumpkin flesh, honey, nutmeg, clove, toasty, biscuity malt. Some of the best pumpkin flavors in a beer I've ever had.

Full, crisp mouthfeel, with nice carbonation, strong bubbles.

My first beer from Schlafly. Lovin' it.

Pours a nice clear orange with a bit of white head that doesn't stay around long, leaving some nice lacing.

Smells like warm pumpkin pie. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and pumpkin are the main ones I can pick out. A very Fall smelling beer.

Very spicy, in a good way. Cinnamon and clove bite, maybe a little nutmeg, and of course, pumpkin. Also a hint of malt. The alcohol is well hidden, just showing up as warming at the finish.

Smooth and creamy feel, with a tingle from the carbonation.

I will say up front I really don't like pumpkin pie, but I like this beer. There is just a lot of flavor here, and a lot going on. Very much a fall beer, everything about it is perfect for fall. If you like pumpkin beers, definitely try this one, I am ready for more of it.

The bottle boasts a beer that "tastes like pumpkin pie", which was the reason I bought it.

It really is a sweet, spicy, full beer for anyone looking for a go-to seasonal. Having not checked the ABV on the bottle, I was surprised to have a buzz on my third.

The spice wins the day for me. The cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg are as present in the taste as in the smell. A very clean and literal expression of spicy brewing.

As for the pumpkin flavor, this particular pumpkin ale has the most forefront pumpkin flavor of the ones I've tried. I could try and describe it better, but ultimately I just feel like saying "there's just more... pumpkin, I don't know". Go figure.

Its just great. If someone were to ask me to recommend a fall seasonal, as of right now this is the one I'd tell them about.
