Our Irish-Style Extra Stout amplifies the traditional drier versions from Ireland for a bolder, black brew. The addition of both roasted barley and Dark Crystal malted barley give Extra Stout undertones of chocolate, molasses and dried fruit. The beer is generously hopped with East Kent Goldings to balance the sweetness from the malted barley.

Extra Stout is a descendent of the British and Irish porters of the 18th Century. These strong porters eventually became known as strong stout, then Foreign Stout or Extra Stout, depending on origin. Extra Stouts were exported world-wide, gaining popularity in the West Indies, Africa and parts of Asia.

A 12oz bottle with a bottled date of 12/26/2012

A - Pitch black with 2 fingers of head and tons of sticky lace left on the glass

S - Faint aroma, but some malty grains is about all I detect.

T - Smooth and thick. Chocolate, burnt malts, and a hidden ABV.

M - High in carbonation and full bodied.

O - An excellent dry stout! Worth checking out if you like stouts for sure. A stronger and tastier Guinness.

I had this at the Schlafly Tap Room when I was in St. Louis a month or so ago and really enjoyed it. I picked up a six pack there and am finally getting around to reviewing it.

A: Nice and impenetrable black with a gorgeous mocha-colored head that starts out at a finger and recedes fully after about a minute. The lacing is thin, with a mixture of dots and boomerangs.

S: Roasted malts and coffee are the first scents I pick up... I've got to let this warm up a bit. Some vanilla and milk chocolate smells are also apparent. There is a hint of booze mingling in with the other aromas, as well as some earthy, wet soil.

T: I'm convinced that this is a beer that should be drank at room temperature, and no lower. The sad thing is, I knew this before I started this review and still cracked it when slightly chilled. That said, when at proper temperature, this is a tasty brew. The roasted malt flavors are probably the dominant aspect of the taste, but it is pretty well balanced by the vanilla and chocolate notes. The finish is a little more as astringent and coffee-like than I remember it being on tap.

M: Good and creamy, but nothing that blows my mind. It could be bigger and play with all parts of my palate a bit more.

D: This went down easily and I would certainly have another. The slight astringent taste on the finish prohibits me from giving this more of a boost.

12oz brown bottle bottle with a bottled on date for freshness though I think this one could cellar without a problem.

A- Pours out a black colored liquid with slight hues of dark brown at the edges of the glass. Good two fingers of tan head subside to a thin bubbly lace.

S- Soft charcoal aroma with a faint alcohol and dark berry nose.

T&M- Slick and full bodied with a semi- crisp smoothness that rolls over the tongue. Dark chocolate, slight char and toasted grain with a modest hop bitterness. Alcohol is noticeable but still deceiving @ 8.0% abv, hints of black berries and currants come to mind. Finishes a little bitter sweet but more sweet from the residuals.

D- Not as refined as other Export Style Stouts, a bit rough and the roasted character is not as defined and in your face as I had expected. Still a good beer, no doubt about that ... I just think it misses the mark for the style a little bit.

12 oz bottle..label tells me this was "brewed with love on 1/05/15"

Pours near black, lighter mocha head, leaves a fine bubble film, thin collar and some spots and strands of lacing.

Nose is of some dark malts, some coffee

Pleasingly dry and tasty stout, with more charred and roasty malts, lite coffee and a moderate chocolate presence. Nicely crafted and worth a try, especially if ya like a nice dry Irish style stout

Thanks to Vancer for this extra bottle for the BA Anny Club. Slight head. Very dark. Not a whole lot of smell. Nice taste of malt with no alcohol taste noted. I was surprised this had an ABV of 8%. Very drinkable. I have not had too many dry stouts (except those by Victory & Sly Fox) but this is a good brew.

Appearance- Pours an opaque black with about a half finger of dark brown head that dies back to a coating over the surface of the beer in short order.

Smell- Lots of rich roast coming through in the nose. A fair amount of burnt coffee coming through as well. Smells like a good mixture of sweet, rich, and bitter.

Taste- Rich roasted malt with burnt aspects of coffee and bitter chocolate showing through as well. A nice combination and that characteristic soda bread quality in Irish dry stouts makes a showing here as well. Subtle and well crafted.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Mouthfeel becomes just a touch thin as the beer warms but pretty adequate. The flavor profile is rich but not overpowering, and I could see this being a nice session beer if the mood was right.

Overall, a very nice example of the style. I liked this one and would definitely have it again.

Dark brown with 1" tan head disolving into a thin layer. Nice lacing

Aromas of chocolate, candied fruit and dates. Nice smelling beer.

Chared wood up front with some alcohol coming through. Lots of character with a bitter-sweet chocolate at the finish that lingers.

Medium to full bodied, pretty smooth.

Good sipping beer with moderate alchohol 8%. I'm planning to throw some beef into this stuff and pop it on the grill, it's begging for the "barbie".

12 oz bottle served in a goblet.
Looks and smells like a typical Irish Stout, but tasting reveals a slightly high (and a bit too lively) carbonation level and more generous use of hops. The nose is more spicy than usual too. Relatively complex flavor with hints of chocolate, coffee, molasses and dried fruit. Near even sweet/bitter balance. Head has weak retention.

Pours one shade from black with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malt with mild amounts of black patent malt and cocoa powder. Also present are very mild hints of smokiness.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Black and roasted malt flavors kick things off, each sharing 50% of the profile. Midway through the sip cocoa powder and hints of leafy hops enter into things, carrying through to a solidly bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall I thought this was a bit too far on the roasty side to be a traditional export stout but that doesn't mean it's not a tasty beer. Well worth a shot.

12oz. brown bottle, purchased at Party Source, poured into an imperial pint.

A: Dark brown with some taracotta(sp? lol) hues. 1 finger worth of light tan head forms and falls withing a minute or so. Some decent lacing.

S: Toasty and roasty malts, not too heavy. A bit of smoky, woody, peaty aromas going on, very interesting. A touch of alcohol. A bit of floral and lightly resinous hops to balance.

T/M: Rich malts. Definitely some of that Irish/Scottish influence. More of the woody and peaty flavors with a full flavored sweetness that's not too heavy and not overdone. Maybe some light molasses. Hops are pretty potent, needed to balance the full malt flavors. A bit of bitterness to cut some of the sweetness. Body is full but not heavy and has a great creamy smoothness. Almost feels like an oatmeal stout.

D: Even at 8%, fully flavored, and full bodied, this brew is still pretty drinkable. Very tasty. I'm actually very happily surprised with this.

This beer was poured into an Imperial pint glass at 53° from a 12 ounce bottle. A 'Bottled With Love on' date was on the bottom of the label. One finger of tan head sat on top of the dark brown beer with tinges of red.

The beer was clean smelling with just a hint of sweet malt.

The taste was better thathe non descript bouquet I sensed. There was a smooth, slightly sweet malt taste with a candy like presence.

I enjoyed the aftertaste and the sensation that there was Belgian candy. A slight bitterness teased the sides of the tongue and made this a delight to quaff. Some alcohol was sensed the longer it stayed in the mouth.

There was some lacing as I consumed the beer but it was very minimal. I tried to get more out of the aroma but failed. Still this was enjoyable and I will take it easy and enjoy the rest of the sixer at a later date.

A - Tar black and completely opaque with a reddish brown head. Retention is ok, but the head reduces to a thin cap within a few minutes.

S - Burnt rubber, espresso, dark chocolate, and heavy chocolate whipped mousse.

T - Bitter dark cooking chocolate and sweeter dark chocolate like you might taste in a high end candy bar (Symphony or Toblerone). Double chocolate chip cookies with nuts.

M - Medium bodied with fairly high levels of carbonation and a dry roasted coffee finish.

D - Outstanding. I'm really, really impressed with this stout. One of the most drinkable of it's style that I've ever encountered.

Deep black, with a huge head of bubbles.

Nose is chocolate roasted malts.

Taste is rich and thick, but smooth-bodied. I get coffee and chocolate roastiness. There's little hint of the 8.0% ABV, just a smooth and well-balanced extra stout that's every bit as tasty as any out there. Superb!

A - Brown pour into a pint glass. Tan inch of head. Not transparent but light still shone through.

S - Roasted malt, toasted barley. Subtle overall.

T - Solid Irish Stout. Burnt malt comes through, balanced with bitter hops. Nice, not a hint of sweetness.

M - Soft and silky. Surprising and nice. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

D - A very solid Irish stout. A perfect daily drinker.

I had this on tap at the brewery/tap room and a new batch had just been released on Feb 2, 2007. Served in a snifter - it had an excellent aroma and good complex flavor combining smooth roast and sweet malts. It was very drinkable - the 8% ABV was very well hidden. Blackish-red in color and only a small, creamy tan head which was not long-lasting compared to other Irish stouts.

pours jet black, nice body, cocoa frothy head and great lacing

sweet roasted malts, light floral and pine hops, light molasses, dark fruit

sweet with a dark chocolate bitterness up front. light dark fruits through the middle. nice bitter finish that finishes with a dry roasted charcoal flavor.

very full body, nice moderate carbonation, dry feeling through out.

this has always been a schlafly favorite of mine. very bold and full of flavor. this years really seems to shine. ABV is a bit high but i could easily drink a few

Pours a chestnut tinged mahogany with a pinky of mocha colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Roasted malt in spades & leafy hops as this warms

T: Tastes follows the nose, dryness & a touch of cocoa up front. Dryness dominates as this warms, along with leafy hops, along with some plumy tastes. Finishes dry, tanic & a whisper of booze. Finishes dry & roasty, plus a touch of booze, almost pulled a 4.0

S: Medium bodied, low carbonation & good balance

Drinks fairly easy for the abv, a good representation of the style

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Thanks to Dertbert for including this in a trade.

Pours a dark brown with 1 1/2 fingers of creamy tan head. Shrinks down nicely into a thin layer of smooth, creamy retention that leaves a huge latticework of lace behind. The aroma is pretty heavy with roasty coffee notes, a sticky caramel sweetness, and a touch of cocoa powder.

The taste is roasted malts up front melding into a presence of overly sweet caramel and chocolate sweetness. A coffee bitterness runs through the middle and does its best to pull some of the sweetness back. Finishes bitter and sticky. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a smooth and creamy feel.

Hmmm. While I apprecitated the almost non-existant taste of its 8% ABV, I found that the jacked up sweetness to achieve this was just a tad too much (but not quite cloying) for me to enjoy more than one of these at a time. If you like your Stouts extra sweet, this is a good one!

12 oz bottle that I actually had sitting around from last year. Pours just a shad under black. I can still see some reddish hues along the edges. A bubbly tan one finger head rests atop that dissipates to a small ring.
Aroma is roasted and earthy malts. And even a dried fruit sweetness. Last year I noted that there was an unpleasant worcestershire sauce smell. I'm not getting that this time.

Getting some sweet chocolatey malt flavors. A hint of underlying fruitiness. Roasted and ever so slightly smoked malts. This beer aged well. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I did previously. It's a bit more complex.

This beer is full bodied and drinks exceptionally smooth. This time around I think it's a bit more sweet than the roasty flavor this style should have. However, I'm enjoying it much better this second time around.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a pint glass the liquid is a great looking dark brown, with very good carbonation. The head is nice, 2 plus fingers, tan and leaves some lace.

The smell is great a nice roasty toasty aroma. It begs you to drink.

The taste is very very good, Could be this night but this brew delivers and really hit the spot. The dark roasty malty is full of great flavor, coffee notes chocolate, toasted marshmallows. Yes, thats right, marshmallows. Even though this is a dry stout is dry it has a very welcome and pleasing sweet note.

The mouthfeel is awesome, Great full body much better then the average, Macro Irish stout. It is also smooth and creamy with just the right carbonation.

The drinkability is great, I wish I had many more. Huge thanks to JPM30 for this brew and one other I will try to hold on to for a while.

Picked up a single of this, bottled 01 14 2010.

Black with a sizable mocha dome, the foam leaves a delicate ring of cappucino foam around the edge.

Aroma is really rich, fried plantain, hot chocolate, semisweet chocolate chips. Fairly sweet but really pleasant.

Chock full of chocolate, this isn't quite RIS milkshake territory, but it drinks like chocolate milk. Full, rich, and chocolatey. A bit of roast with tobacco bitterness in the aftertaste briefly. Not at all cloying, though there's a good deal of sweetness in the form of chocolate and fried plantain flavors. Possibly the best i've tried from Schlafly... they should make a blend of this with their stellar pumpkin ale!

12 ounce bottle, bottled on 2/4/2009. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours black with about an inch brown head. Head retention is good, but not much lacing at all. Nice aroma, it smells like roasted malt, coffee, molasses and chocolate. Taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like roasted/burnt malt, smoke, coffee and chocolate. The hops show up in the bitter finish, and there's a good overall mix between the sweetness and bitterness in this brew. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit silky and creamy and has good carbonation. Drinkability is good, it's smooth and easy to drink. I think this is a good overall brew, I enjoyed it and would definitely buy it again.

pours the deepest darkest brown almost black with a 1+ finger tan head that left some spotted lacing

smells of dark fruit chocolate and hops

taste - wow this is by far the best exp. stout and better then most RIS - rich malts chocolate caramel nutty dark fruit a tiny bit of roast with a perfect amount of hop bitterness

mouthfeel is medium to full (which is rare with this style) good carb that still tickles the tongue and is very smooth and creamy

drinkability off the charts - this is the stout that you can knock back a few even at 8% and still get the rich full complex taste that lots of impy stout bring at well over 10+%

A - A fingers worth of slightly fizzy tightly packed medium brown colored head with some big chunky bubble mixed in... Slight retention gives way to full moderately creamy lacing... A light black color that allows a bit of light to leak in at the bottom of the glass hinting at a slight red hue... Some carbonation bubbles can been seen racing along the sides of the glass...

S - Lightly roasted malts... Cocoa powder... Baker's chocolate... Subtle coffee notes... Some caramelized sugars... Soy sauce... Perhaps even a touch of smoke...

T - Roasted malts... Some faint espresso notes... Dark chocolate... Cream... Caramel... Toffee... Brownie mix... A touch of smokiness on the finish...

M - Medium to full bodied... Slightly dense... Lush and creamy... Subtle carbonation... A bit chewy... Excellent balance and consistency... A bit of a chalky finish... Very nicely done...

D - A very nice brew here folks... Above average in all categories and teetering on outstanding in most... I only get to sample Schlafly on a limited basis, but this is my favorite to date... Not overpowering and proof the depth and complexity go along way in making a world class offering...

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a nice light brown creamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of deep chocolate notes with light roasted malt notes also noticeable. Taste is heavier than I had anticipated with loads of black chocolate notes with some roasted malt notes and some light dry bitter notes. Body is fuller then expected with good carbonation. Very enjoyable and probably closer to a foreign stout than an Irish stout.
