Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Irish-Style Extra Stout amplifies the traditional drier versions from Ireland for a bolder, black brew. The addition of both roasted barley and Dark Crystal malted barley give Extra Stout undertones of chocolate, molasses and dried fruit. The beer is generously hopped with East Kent Goldings to balance the sweetness from the malted barley.

Extra Stout is a descendent of the British and Irish porters of the 18th Century. These strong porters eventually became known as strong stout, then Foreign Stout or Extra Stout, depending on origin. Extra Stouts were exported world-wide, gaining popularity in the West Indies, Africa and parts of Asia.

Bottled January 2012

Poured into a chalice with a vigorous pour that only produces a minimal head.

Smells of dark fruits, cacao nibs, and a bit of roasted coffee and chocolate.

Taste is smooth with some initial sweetness from the cacao that fades to prunes and dates, then dries out to dusty finish.

Mouthfeel is decent. Slightly more carbonation than I prefer, but not so much that takes away from the smoothness of this beer.

Overall, not my favorite style, but one that Schlafly has done well and I can appreciate it.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark brown color. The mocha-colored head starts off at three fingers high, and fades down to a thin film in, I want to say a minute. Some lacing is left behind.

S: At first whiff, I get a ton of chocolate and vanilla. There isn't much of a roasted character, but there is a solid nutty one. A touch of hoppiness comes out after a spell in the glass - all in all, though, it's closer to a porter than a stout. But there's one thing - more than anything else - that gives me a lot of hope: it has vaguely fruity, mineral-esque note that just screams "I'm well attenuated!"

T: There is a significant fruit character - cherries, figs, and raisins - at first, meshing with a subtle coffee note. No roast to speak of, just a nutty and chocolaty middle giving way to a crisp, mineraly finish. The chocolate flavor grows a little stronger as it sits, which is always welcome. Solid all-around.

M: Texture wise, it's quite slick; I'd prefer it to be creamy. It's dry at first, growing more and more wet as more is consumed (expected for 8%). I think it's somewhat undercarbonated - making it seem even more sticky than what it really is. Despite the foibles, it's quite drinkable.

O: A nice stout. Give me some more roast, and this one would kick ass. Still, this one is easy to drink and borderline refreshing in the way a foreign stout should be.

Bought this as a howler (yes, a 1/2 Growler). A little stronger than a traditional Irish Stout. Dark with a chestnut cast, chocolate brown head that doesn't last long. The aroma is overwhelmed with alcohol, but tones down into a sweet malted barley.

Slightly creamy with a dry, dark chocolate taste - slightly nutty. Glutenous mouth feel, not as dry as sticky. The molasses taste makes it a little bitter. Aroma is great after it warms, good example of an irish stout (a little extra strength). Nice alcohol warmness as it finishes.

I like this, will certainly purchase again as a standard extra stout.

Pours an opaque black with a frothy cappuccino head that lingers.

Molasses, roast malt, and toasted nuts dominate the aroma.

Roast malt, coffee, and nutty, sweet flavors combine with cola and dark chocolate to form the flavor. There's a bit of a metallic character that is slightly offputting.

Body is fairly full, with low carbonation and light alcohol warmth.

I prefer this on tap. Good roast character, and the sweetness is a nice counter, but that metallic note is a bit much.

Pours with the look of a great Irish stout. Then the head died quickly and I realized the aroma was somewhat tame compared to classic Irish stouts I have tasted over the years. Upon first sip, the flavor was nice; not bitter and yet flavored with bakers chocolate and light roast. Not the usual heavy mouth feel or after taste of Guiness or other stouts. I will say it does drink smoothly for 8% ABV stout! Overall, it's somewhat generic (I'll forget what it tastes like in a few weeks or months) but does no harm to the style.

Pours a little thing and light around the edges. Decent cola colouring, minimal tan head that was never really there in the first place, so not much hanging out to do. Minimal lacing.

More complex aroma than I expected. Some dry bitter coffee and a surprising amount of vanilla. Roast and ashy behind that.

Solid. The vanilla sweetness that surprised me on the aroma decided not to jump into the fray on the tongue, instead letting an ashy bordering on smokey dry bittersweet coffee and a touch of dark fruits come forth. I can't quite pin it down precisely, but it's more fruity than I expected (not overwhelmingly so, but the aroma didn't give me that impression).

Medium/light body and a decent carbonation level, with a higher ABV than I would expect for the style/etc, but it's very well hidden. It could be easy to get sloppy off a couple of these before you realized what you'd done.
This is a solid entry into the style that won't necessarily blow you away, but is perfectly enjoyable.
