Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Irish-Style Extra Stout amplifies the traditional drier versions from Ireland for a bolder, black brew. The addition of both roasted barley and Dark Crystal malted barley give Extra Stout undertones of chocolate, molasses and dried fruit. The beer is generously hopped with East Kent Goldings to balance the sweetness from the malted barley.

Extra Stout is a descendent of the British and Irish porters of the 18th Century. These strong porters eventually became known as strong stout, then Foreign Stout or Extra Stout, depending on origin. Extra Stouts were exported world-wide, gaining popularity in the West Indies, Africa and parts of Asia.

Pours a dark blackbody with a thick, rich, craggy head with excellent retention and lacing properties. Roasty aromas of dark chocolate, cold coffee, and a bit of toffee. Flavor is sweet and cocoa-like with hints of toffee right up front, before mocha flavors, with their espresso bitterness, round out the mid-palate. There is a slight but pleasant alcoholic warmth on the finish that reminds you that this a sipper, not a gulper. Medium full body is appropriate to the austerity of its flavors and abv. I absolutely love this beer.

12 oz bottle served in a goblet.
Looks and smells like a typical Irish Stout, but tasting reveals a slightly high (and a bit too lively) carbonation level and more generous use of hops. The nose is more spicy than usual too. Relatively complex flavor with hints of chocolate, coffee, molasses and dried fruit. Near even sweet/bitter balance. Head has weak retention.

12oz Bottle received in trade with cfrancis - thanks!

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an average size frothy head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains, coffee

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and coffee. There is also some dark fruity notes and a light burnt/charred flavour.

Overall - A flavourful brew that is still very drinkable. The alcohol is well hidden and the flavours are all in balance. Well worth picking up a bottle to try.

Appearance: Dark brown, chocolate Goan.

Smell: Roasty.

Taste: Toasty malt, chocolate, caramel, molasses. Stays interesting throughout.

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation.

Overall: Not your typical Irish Stout but I'll take it. Drinks easier than its 8% ABV.
