American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.90% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Dry Hopped American Pale Ale (APA) is charged with American hops to create a bold, aromatic ale. Assertive hop flavor joins the pine/citrus aroma characteristic of American hops to balance the full body provided by North American malts. After fermentation, the beer circulates through a bed of Cascade and Chinook hops, boosting the distinctive hop aroma of this satisfying ale.

In the long view of the history of beer, American Pale Ale is a newcomer. Based on English Pale Ale, American brewers adapted this style into something new. Born out of the reverence English Pale Ales during the 1980’s American beer scene, APA is the bold, hoppier cousin of Pale Ale. With an emphasis on American hops, APA is gaining popularity with breweries racing to make these ales with such great hop characters.

A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. The body is a hazy honey-amber in color that turns more golden-orange when backlit. Small off-white head on top. No real lacing.

S: Not terribly strong in the nose - some mild citrusy hops (think clementine oranges) over bready malt.

T: More or less follows the nose: bready malt foundation, then citrusy hops. Some grapefruit, some orange peel, finishes with a touch of lemon zest that sticks around as a lingering bitterness. As it warms, the malt becomes more caramelly, but the hops still dominate on the finish and in the aftertaste.

M: Medium in heft, carbonation is fine and slightly prickly.

O: This is a solid take on what has become a ho-hum, ubiquitous style. It doesn't shine, but neither does it disappoint.

Bottled 5/29/13. So over a year old, should probably not review this, but it was surprisingly good! Purchased as part of a mixed six at Liquor Outlet Wine Cellars in Boonton New Jersey on June 25th 2014.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Tree House tulip.

a: Slightly hazy amber with a finger thick white head which receded to thick surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Bready malt and slight fruit.

t: Moderate bready malt under a medium hop bite. Bitterness lingers at first but mellows later. Sweet to dry finish

m; Medium with very good body and smoothness. Some carbonation tingle.

o: A surprisingly tasty Pale, well balanced and satisfying. Very sippable. One of the best American style pale ales I have had. Perhaps aging this actually helps it.
