Style | ABV
English India Pale Ale (IPA) |  7.20% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our English Style Export IPA features 100% English hops and a big malt backbone built upon pale and caramel malted barley. The hop varietals, Pilgrim and East Kent Goldings, lend a quality of lemon and spice, which play off of the fruity flavors contributed by the London ale yeast.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

I've been impressed by the Schlafly brews I've tried in the past so I picked up this sixer for IPA day. It looks nice enough on the pour, a nice deep amber color with a good head that dissipated over the first few minutes of drinking. Smell was off on this beer for an IPA. It reminded more of macro domestic beers than any IPA I've ever smelled. It had a stronger malt character than I would expect from an IPA. The taste was off too. Strong malt and baked bread. Boozy with a not enjoyable bitterness to it. Overall, I can't say this will be a beer I purchase again.

A: Pours a hazy gold with a creamy, thick white head. Little chunks of yeast are clearly visible in the liquid.

S: Aromas of leather, heather, bitter orange, pine, lemon rind, and cedar are present on the nose.

T: Strong notes of leather, heather, fresh herbs, bitter orange, kumquat, pine, lemon rind, biscuit, tobacco, cedar, and minerals coat the palate. The finish is earthy and rather dry with pronounced lemon rind, herb, biscuit, and tobacco flavors.

M: Medium in body, but also slighter than I would normally expect for a beer of this style. Decidedly dry as well, especially on the finish. Carbonation is active, but gentle. Alcohol is subdued, but is also capable of catching up with someone quickly.

O: A really solid, authentic example of the style. I think this ale serves as an excellent counterpoint to Schlafly's American and Tasmanian IPAs. I could also see this beer being used to illustrate the differences between English and American takes on the style.

12oz bottle, bottled 6/25/13, poured into a pint glass
A: Orange color, lots of little bubbles and a 1/2-finger head
S: Sweet, lots of barley, more subtle fresh orange juice and a hint of bitter hops
T: Earthy attack followed by sweet malt, sweet grapefruit and some caramel towards the finish
M: Medium-bodied decent carbonation
O: Tasty, just a bit sweet for my palate. If that were toned down & the hop bill increased slightly I think it would accent the citrus/earthy notes even better... or perhaps it's a bit late past its bottling date
