English India Pale Ale (IPA) |  7.20% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our English Style Export IPA features 100% English hops and a big malt backbone built upon pale and caramel malted barley. The hop varietals, Pilgrim and East Kent Goldings, lend a quality of lemon and spice, which play off of the fruity flavors contributed by the London ale yeast.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A real nice gold orange amber body hits with a good white cap the forms very slowly. Good retention. Body color is quite crystal clear as well, and there is some real solid lacing on this glass while drinking, and leaves a real solid thick puck and collar while drinking.

Mild brisk lemon, faint woody ash and herbal black tea, hints of apricot. Faint toasty malt backbone.. yup just as interesting as how I remember it on tap, great.

Palate is just a giant rush of senses on the taste. Hop blasting tea herbal bitters, a great graham cracker crust on the finish. Mouthfeel hits with a nice toasty brown sugar, crisp and baked all over. A good thick sense without a syrupy content. Wonderful lingering hop aroma on this, of black tea mixed with piping hot spice (not alcohol).

Overall, still wins for me, probably one of my favorite English IPAs even still.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a hazy golden color. Vigorous pour yielded a large head. Pretty decent lacing.

Smells of lemons. Also getting a bit of a sour smell rather than just the citrus from the lemon. I thought the beer smelled a little stale, but I'm pretty sure it was just the sour.

Tastes like a hopped up heffe kind of. Lemons on my palette.

On the mouth it's not crisp, and not creamy. Kind of average.

Overall a good beer. Not the best IPA I've ever had, but a good six pack if you're looking for something good to drink while grilling, or to share with some friends.

Poured into a balloon glass.

Look: A light burnt orange body under a light cream colored head. Massive sheets of lacing.

Aroma: Malty with wood notes and spices. Piny hops in the end.

Taste: Malty and spicy up front, piny with grapefruit rind in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy in body.

Overall: Pretty good, pretty thick for summer drinking though.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a cloudy amber color with bits of sediment floating around. There's about two fingers worth of off-white colored head, and its texture is fairly rocky-looking. Retention is pretty decent, while the head leaves behind webs of lacing on the glass.

S: At first, I pick a healthy amount of sourdough bread and earthiness. There are some twinges that try to resemble stone fruits, but not vividly in the least. Additional hints of mineral water (suggesting a dry beer) and acidic citrus also come through. The citrusy qualities are slightly harsh on the nose. Eh, somewhat up-and-down, leaning slightly closer to down.

T: The opening bread notes are quite well done - they're nicely defined without weighing the palate down. However, just like the nose indicated, there's too much acidic qualities coming from the hops. The actual citrus notes are very mild (no orange marmalade flavors here, sadly), it's mostly just acid. A shame, as everything else about this is good, I just can't get over the battery acid taste.

After a while, its acidic-ness is tempered by the presence of...tobacco, or hell, even weed. It's not enough to make me love this, but it does make this a bit more enjoyable. Still, it's rather imbalanced.

M: It is crisp and fairly light, like a good IPA should be. Carbonation is solidly strong, not overly so. Because it isn't balanced that well, it's not particularly drinkable.

O: I literally have NO idea what to think of this brew. I definitely don't think it's in the same league as some of Schlafly's other IPAs (namely, their wonderful TIPA), but after sipping it for a while, it grows on me slightly. Slightly. Quash some of the acidic qualities, and this would become a genuinely good English IPA. Try it if you can get a single, I guess.

This English Style IPA has a cloudy copper hue that is capped by a soapy thin head. The nose is very subtle in bitterness with some herbal notes but it has more barley and bran grain notes. The flavor is very barleyesque, heavy on dry grain malt, bran flakes and a bitter herb tone. The feel is very dry, crisp, and a bit heavy on carbonation. I understand the style and like heavy malts but this seemed to rely heavily on a dry bran like flavor that just wasn't my favorite.

Highlighting the taste that forced the English bitter from a more balanced demeanor to a heavily hopped tilt, the thirst for British soldiers along the India trade route is met with a taste that Shlafly ensures isn't lost on more recent American IPA trends.

Its bright copper hue preludes its caramel, biscuit and nutty robust sweetness within. Pleasant taste of toasted grain gives the early palate a juicy shortbread character, equipped with bread crust, pecan and delicate floral goodness.

Once the taste latches onto the middle, the hops turn herbal and strongly of stewed tea leaf; but also backed by the eatery fruitiness of orange, lemon, currant and faint apricot- enough to suggest a mild marmalade character, except with a graham cracker balance.

As the finish comes quick, a crisp and refreshing taste of southern sweet tea, laced with fresh-pulled fruity tobacco gives final impressions along with the classic broad, grassy and woodish bitterness from noble English hops.

Poured an orange-tinted amber with a clinging white head. There is significant detritus floating in this and settling to the bottom, a real negative. There is almost no aroma or flavor even as it warms. There is a nice weight to the body. Not even remotely like an English IPA. I don't know what happened to make this bottle that bad.
