Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Bière de Garde invokes the tradition of the farmhouse ales of Northern France, renowned for their subtle aromas of apricot and allspice. Four different types of malt create a toffee sweetness, while French Strisselspalt hops add a subtle spice flavor. The beer is fermented with a distinct French farmhouse ale strain, then bottle conditioned with extra sugar and yeast for at least two weeks.

Bière de Garde translates to “beer which has been kept or stored”. This traditional, artisan farmhouse ale from Northern France was brewed in early spring and stored in cold cellars for consumption in warmer months. While related to its spicier, tarter Belgian cousin Saison, Bière de Garde is a richer, sweeter beer.

A: Copper, cloudy with lots of fine bubbled carbonation. A 3 finger yellowish candy glass looking bubbly head that fades fast. There was an overflow of foamy mass moving upwards, first protruding up the neck of the bottle and then finally out the top after the first pour.

S: An iron like quality, green herbs, a freezer burn like quality, a hint of lemon candy, caramel, crème brule, toffee, nail polish remover, Belgian yeasts, aged musty cellar quality.

T: Crème brule, caramel, toffee, nail polish remover, musty cellar, iron, light sweetness, very little lemony quality, a solid malty backbone, little bittering hops.

M: Medium light syrupy body, lots of fine bubbled carbonation.

O: My first in this style, I am really liking this beer. Got it in St Louis, drinking it in Rolla, MO, Aug 5th, 2014. Visually impressive with the initial overflow of carbonation, the first American Beer I’ve had that has captured that sometimes found Belgian aspect.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep orangey color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and no lacing. Aroma of grainy cereal notes with quite a bit of residuals sugars. Taste is also a mess with an overload of residual sugars and some grainy cereal notes with some funny ester. Body is semi-full with medium-to-low carbonation. Incredible mess with a definite lack of attenuation.
