Quadrupel (Quad) |  12.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Quadrupel features notes of stone fruit from a Belgian abbey yeast strain and the taste of sweet toffee from a touch of Belgian Candi syrup. This mahogany-colored ale is fermented with a distinct Belgian abbey ale strain, then bottle conditioned with extra sugar and yeast for at least two weeks. European hops add balance to the sweetness of the malt and yeast.

In the United States, the term “Quadrupel” refers to a very strong, dark ale with a spicy, fruit flavor and high alcohol content. The beer style is intended to be stronger than a Belgian-style Tripel, so the alcohol content tends to be 10% or more. Beyond these guidelines, there is still discussion among brewers as to what constitutes a Quadrupel.

750-mL bottle given to me from my brother for my b-day this past April. Decided to pop it open on the 4th of July. No freshness date to be seen on the bottle. Print screened label. Rustic looking artwork with short description of the beer on the back.

Pours a mahogany color nice and clear with massive rocky off-white head. Nice steady carbonation streams up from the large tulip sized glass I poured into.

Upfront aromas of residual brown sugars and candied stone fruit. Dark plum and figs come to mind. Predominately malty with no hop aroma. Sweet and rich candy smelling.

Malty sweet upfront with loads of brown sugar, candied dark fruit, and some carmelized sugars and molasses. Abbey dubbel Belgian yeast character shines here - but at double strength. Decidedly sweet with plenty of residual sugars but has a sharp tint of bitterness at the tail end.

At 12% ABV, this one drinks sparingly smooth. No hot alcohols or solvent vapors. Alcohol provides warmth but definitely not hot or harsh. Mostly full bodied. Perfect after dinner drink or can be substituted as dessert.

Overall, a very well made and balance Quad. Never had a beer from this brewery before, but would definitely try anything else they make after giving this one a shot.

Poured from 750 ml bottle into snifter.

A: Pours a light mahogany brown with a two to three finger fluffy off white head with nice retention. Lasting at least 2-3 minutes. Some spotty lacing,

S: Some slight yeast esters, but nose is dominated by plum, date, and Belgian candy sugar.

T: Lots of sweetness up front especially when cold. Plum, raisin, date, and fig. Some spices coming through as it warms including pepper and clove.

M: Full bodied and nicely carbonated coating the tongue nicely. Tends a bit towards the sweet side when cold, but improves as it warms.

O: A very solid quad. Glad I grabbed another bottle to take home.

750ml bottle, bottled 7/24/13, into a pint glass
A: Hazy brown color with next to no head
S: Sweet, fig, maple, malt, prunes, dried apricot
T: The initial flavors are very nice- spice, raisin, fig, prune, caramel, toffee but then the sweetness takes over around the midpalate and it finishes with a sweet malt syrup
M: Full bodied from both the alcohol and sugar
O: Nice overall but I think it would be better if there were a bit more spice and a bit less sweetness

750 ml bottle was poured into a stemmed glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a small head that reduced to a small layer. It is a murky orange brown with little clarity, but vision of tiny bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Toffee, caramel, boozy alcohol, raisins, plums,

Taste: Toffee, caramel, warm boozy alcohol, bready, raisins, plums, and mild hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Silky, creamy smooth, full bodied, low carbonation, warm alcohol, and extremely drinkable.

Overall: Pretty solid quad from these Missouri guys. All their beers have been stellar so far, but increasingly harder to find here in Massachusetts. I need to stock up.
