Our Oatmeal Stout is a classic British-style stout brewed with flaked oatmeal and roasted barley. Freshly-roasted coffee beans, cocoa and touches of raisin and dried fruit dominate the aroma of this super dark ale. The richness of the grain blend is balanced by the nutty character of the roasted malt, the creaminess from the oatmeal flakes and a dose of hops.

Before the 19th century, all barley was malted over wood-fired kilns and the resulting dark roasted malt defined the browns, porters, and stouts of England. Near the end of the 19th century, brewers had introduced oats for their purported restorative and nourishing characteristics, producing beers such as oatmeal stout and milk stout. By the 1950’s, Oatmeal Stout had nearly trickled out of existence. Following the beer’s literary rebirth in the articles of English beer writer Michael Jackson in the 1970’s, British and American craft brewers are once again promoting the style.

Had on cask at the Schlafly Tap Room in St. Louis.

Beer poured a nice dark brown, almost black. Very little head.

Beer smells very roasty like most oatmeal stouts, but nothing special.

The taste is very pleasant with the roasted malts and a hint of caramel flavors. A bit sweet.

The mouthfeel was dissapointing. The beer was a bit too thin and watery for an Oatmeal stout.

All in all, an OK beer.

I’m surprised at the relatively low rating. Sure it’s not the best oatmeal stout, whatever that is, but it’s a solid example of the style and inexpensive too.
It pours dark with a Black and Tan type head. Hangs around too.
Notes of chocolate raisin and caramel oatmeal. Kinda earthy.
You get the hint of peat, like a good single pot in the background. Up front it’s all smoked chocolate and steel cut oats.
Smooth, almost oily finish. Very gentle and easy on the throat and the belly.
Overall it’s solid. I may have pumped the score up a bit because, while not world class, this is a very good beer.

Bottled 11/1/21; drank 1/24/22 @ the Yarchives.

Black/brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice tan head; frothy, tree-rung lace.

Oatmeal, dark chocolate, cream & faint acorn notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Dark chocolate, fresh earth & raw oat flavors up front; mild citrus notes on the finish.

A bit harsh for the style, but it's drinkable. Not one I'll seek out again.

I am trying this beer off the tapper at The Double Overtime Grill at the Double Tree Hotel in Mt. Vernon, IL. It poured an opaque dark with tan head that did not leave any lace. The scent had roast and coffee notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with dark roast malt with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla and very subtle anise. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

I think I picked this up a few weeks ago at that place off of 15 in Thurmont. It has been waiting patiently in the back of my fridge for this date. Black body with a creamy cap and plenty of oats and coffee in the nose. Starts out with some sour mash oat flavors that morph into that familiar nutty chocolate and coffee with hints of raisin and plenty of creaminess in the texture. It also has a reasonable balance through to the finish. Solid but unspectacular for the style.

12oz bottle
bottled with love on 10/16/2020
it’s been way too long since I had this classic Schlafly stout
L: near black body, tall foamy tan head
S: dark chocolate, coffee, roast & char, raisin
T: full flavored stout; dark baker’s chocolate, roasted barley, char, ash, raisin, prune, oats, earthy hops
F: full body, creamy and smooth, ample carbonation, balanced finish with roast and earthy hops lingering
O: lots of complexity with this one; glad to finally come back to it!
