Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Oatmeal Stout is a classic British-style stout brewed with flaked oatmeal and roasted barley. Freshly-roasted coffee beans, cocoa and touches of raisin and dried fruit dominate the aroma of this super dark ale. The richness of the grain blend is balanced by the nutty character of the roasted malt, the creaminess from the oatmeal flakes and a dose of hops.

Before the 19th century, all barley was malted over wood-fired kilns and the resulting dark roasted malt defined the browns, porters, and stouts of England. Near the end of the 19th century, brewers had introduced oats for their purported restorative and nourishing characteristics, producing beers such as oatmeal stout and milk stout. By the 1950’s, Oatmeal Stout had nearly trickled out of existence. Following the beer’s literary rebirth in the articles of English beer writer Michael Jackson in the 1970’s, British and American craft brewers are once again promoting the style.

Poured into a 2nd Shift tasting glass. Also had this on tap recently. Tap was better.

A: Black, lots of lacing on the top with long lasting legs

S: very lightly roasty and coffee

T: roasted malt with slight sweetness at the end. Moderate bitterness but an unpleasant mettalic taste appears midtaste.
This wasn't there in the tap version so I can only factor that I
may have a badly kept bottle.

M: light to moderate body, very very carbonated, lightly silky

O: I expect an oatmeal stout to have a full body with a very evident silky creaminess to it and an evident base sweetness. This meets my expectations only partway. It tasted sweeter and creamier on tap so I give the tap version a full grade higher than the bottle.

Enjoyed at the St. Louis airport, the beer was on par with most oatmeal stouts. Nice body in the glass with the usual full aroma. The beer held up well in the mouth and had some depth and body to it. Nothing special in the taste that makes it stand out against other stouts though.

Pours a dark brown color with a short dense khaki head that settles into a light ring.

The aroma is a tad grainy with a subtle roast note. Perhaps some light chocolate notes. The aroma is quite subdued.

The taste is of a smooth roasted malt. Nice milk chocolate notes. Much better than the aroma. Slight hints of char. Light ground coffee notes come through towards the end. A bit of a raisin sweetness plus some caramel.

The feel is moderate with prickly carbonation. Not as smooth as some other oatmeal stouts. Nice balance between sweet and roasted bitterness.

A good but not great oatmeal stout. Nice flavor but misses a tad on the feel and aroma.

A: Nice black color with a 1 finger head.

S: Ver weak smell (note the born on date is 8 months ago - but I don't expect too much fading on a stout). Slight booze smell and malt. Not much else.

T: Surprising turnaround. There is a nice roasted malt flavor. I haven't looked up the ABV - but I am not getting much alcohol.

M: Smooth and creamy like I always want out of an Oatmeal stout. A nice coating feeling and a very slight hint of carbonation.

O: This is a very decent stout that I could drink more than one of. I saw this on the shelf and noticed it was ~8 months old (Bravo to Schlafly for prominently and easily labeling their beers right on the label). But I took a chance on it because I LOVED their coffee stout. This is decent - not the same caliber as the coffee stout but a solid offering.
