Poured from a bottle freshly delivered from the St. Louis brewery by my wife's mother.
Appearance: Tiny to medium sized bubbles pack a one finger high khaki/tan head. Carbonation bubbles quickly rise to the surface. It pours a deep, dark amber, almost black. I cannot see my hand behind the glass. Slight lacing traces its way down the glass as it is consumed.
Smell: Roasted, fresh malt. Slightly sweet hints.
Taste: Roasted malt. Hints of coffee, charcoal. Missing the smooth oatmeal that I expected and remember from previous bottles. Drying hop notes in the finish, more bitter than expected.
Mouthfeel: Small popping carbonation on the tongue. Surprisingly thin, as if something were left out. Like the oatmeal.
Drinkability: This is an average beer, not fantastic. I enjoy it, but feel that it is not a great representation of the style. If you are looking for oatmeal smoothness, it is not here. I could drink a few of these, but if I was looking for an oatmeal stout, I'd have to keep looking.
