Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Oatmeal Stout is a classic British-style stout brewed with flaked oatmeal and roasted barley. Freshly-roasted coffee beans, cocoa and touches of raisin and dried fruit dominate the aroma of this super dark ale. The richness of the grain blend is balanced by the nutty character of the roasted malt, the creaminess from the oatmeal flakes and a dose of hops.

Before the 19th century, all barley was malted over wood-fired kilns and the resulting dark roasted malt defined the browns, porters, and stouts of England. Near the end of the 19th century, brewers had introduced oats for their purported restorative and nourishing characteristics, producing beers such as oatmeal stout and milk stout. By the 1950’s, Oatmeal Stout had nearly trickled out of existence. Following the beer’s literary rebirth in the articles of English beer writer Michael Jackson in the 1970’s, British and American craft brewers are once again promoting the style.

Pours dark, dark brown and with chestnut highlights at the edges when held to the light. Touch of ruby in there too. Nose is weak overall. Bitter coffee, burnt sugar, light char, glimpse of dark fruit, roasted malt, faint chocolate and oats. Maybe some salted peanut. taste is slightly metallic up front. Body is thin and watery. My first thought is; "this is more like a porter than a stout." Has no depth or creaminess. Travels the palate way too quickly. Follows the nose with weak flavor of coffee, chocolate and the fruit has disappeared. Malt is weak and although this has balance it is lacking in intensity and depth. There’s a hop bitter mid palate that settles in back and without it there would be hardly any aftertaste except for the raw oat taste and a salted peanut flavor. I think this has potential but it just isn’t finished yet. It needs some tweaking.

Just flat black in color the head was stiff yet fluffy and disappeared rather quickly.

Oat and lactose-sweetness in aroma there's a touch of malt but the scent is somewhat weak and non-descript.

Roasted oat and charred malt with some residual coffee the taste is also weak and simply does not hold the hardiness that a stout should. Easy to drink with a watery smoothness it's just not all that I want in a Oatmeal Stout.

This needs a more solid backbone with more char, more chocolate and more character. It is tasty though.

A - Deep black just the way me likes it. Head on the other hand is just a minimal 1/4 inch that settles back to nothing really. Could use more carbonation.
S - Smells of chocolate, molasses, coffee, roast, and a touch of lactic acidic twang.
T -Well the hops they use are a touch acidic but it's smooth enough. Has some chocolate and roast not as balanced as other world class oatmeal stouts (hint Anderson Valley) but its easy enough to drink.
M - Light to medium easy to drink yet not as creamy as one would expect.

Overall this is a major disappointment this oatmeal stout is acidic, not very sweet, and quite unbalanced. Would not get this again.
